  1. Agreed, great atmosphere - and I thought we actually had some very good at bats vs. Skubal I just think like our D vs. Washington the other night they made several great defensive plays. Hell PCA's first AB may have gone over the fence? And his base running gaffe cost us a run. I think you can make an argument Detroit's first run could have been unearned - not an easy play but I thought one Shaw could reasonably be expected to have made on Javy with 2 out. And albeit not off Skubal, Seiya got robbed of a homer by another great defensive gem and there were what 1 or 2 men on? We faced their best - and probably the best pitcher in baseball by most accounts and were right there with them. Let's get them today.
  2. Yeah, that's why I was really o.k. with not getting Tanner. 4-years at that money for a reliever that just two years previous had a plus 4 ERA season I was a bit uneasy about. Our pen really seems to be shaping up though, how much credit do you think Zombro gets in this? He seemed instrumental in getting in and unlocking Keller.
  3. Agreed, but too many of these type games the last what.....7 or 8?
  4. yeah, the first thing I noticed about him this year was how fast he was. I listen to one of the Cub prospect podcasts regularly and they talked about him often, but I can never recall them mentioning the speed. It was a very pleasant surprise, and it was pretty obvious from jump.
  5. I think Javy was still struggling in '21 as well....he was doing better than he was in 20 but he was so bad in 20 even mediocre was better. He blamed it on no fans but showed in subsequent years it was more than that. Whatever Russell's off the field issues and the reasons, his regression was real and significant. Schwarber was extreme three true outcome here - so extreme in fact that the best he could do on the open market was a 1 year - $8 million contract with the Nats. Ironically his last two years with the Phillies have been easily his two best seasons of his career. Early last year when we played the Phillies in Wrigley I went and the Phillies fans were pretty down on him, he was hitting below .200 (we can relate) and it was homer or nothing...but his second half was spectacular, and he's kept that momentum up since.
  6. Javy had that great year in 2018, but I felt there was a fairly steady regression after that so I would not agree him. I thought Wilson yes developed a bit as a hitter but regressed as a catcher and that continued as he went to the Cardinals to the point where they won't let him catch anymore. And the bats just stopped in crunch time at the end in both 2018 and 2019 and again in the playoffs in 2020. It was brutal to watch
  7. According to Sharma the Cubs use them, not sure who and how many.
  8. Sharma keeps saying they use different means of measuring that now and the old you don't let them throw more than 30 innings than they did the year before is out of vogue. Instead, they are incorporating factors like pitch velocity, fatigue, recovery, and potentially wearable technology to gain a more nuanced understanding of a pitcher's physical state. This shift is driven by the realization that traditional measures like pitch count don't fully capture the complexities of a pitcher's performance and risk of injury.
  9. I have a friend who thinks it was the beaning - but likely a combo along with the injuries. The issue he has now is a chronic back issue but back then there were different areas of injury. I think he felt like he came back too early from one injury and his performance slipped and it was like he vowed he'd never do that again and would stay out until he was absolutely 100%. He got some criticism for that and he always seemed very sensitive to that and it really seemed to bother him. That may be part of it too.
  10. Yep, I remember the Covid year he was the only one that seemed to be pushing back on playing, everyone else was gung ho to play.
  11. I'd say there's a good argument for top 3 but it's debatable. I think what happened with the Cubs was several players that one expected to keep developing and getting better did not, they regressed instead. Bryant was one of those - injuries played a part but when you can't play you can't help the team.
  12. KB from 2015-2017 was one of the top 3 players in baseball. Injuries started happening, and the beaning happened, and I honestly think he lost his love for the game. I love the memories, but the Cubs made the right move, hell the Giants pretty much came to the same conclusion and both were right. Pains me to say honestly but it's pretty obvious.
  13. Agreed, :he had to have meant the Breweres right? I see the Phillies now about where the 18 or 19 Cubs were, not sure which more exemplifies but we'll see at years end. in my view there's more regression than progerssion. Ironically Schwarber is playing the best of his career and it's not even close.
  14. Hill is married to a high school classmate of mine's daughter, hand to God. So, I'm willing to bet there are few if any Cub fans who has followed his progress or seen more of his at bats than me, and also the 2 pitches before that in my opinion should not be summarily dismissed at all. Sometimes I think too much data and analysis can make the easy decision more difficulty than it needs to be. But I promise - I won't mention that pitch anymore - I agree it's time for me to move on.....I will. And i think Palencia is doing great and I'm thrilled to have a couple of homegrown bullpen arms finally having some success with the club and this pleases me.
  15. Losses like that one always stay with me longer, and I don't find it particularly amusing - but I do think it was a good learning moment for Palencia. Some players you do a favor by slowing their bat down. Hill is absolutely one. Yeah, MAYBE a good slider gets him, but 101 at the top of the zone definitely does. My obsession continues!! I know, I know it's only one of 162,it's over move on....yada, yada, yada.
  16. I bet he wishes he had that 0-2 pitch to Hill back. He'd have a pretty clean sheet had he thrown a fastball there.
  17. We were not making good contact, now you can argue as to how much of that was him and how much our hitters but when he came out of the game we made more hard contact in those two inning than in the 7 he pitched.
  18. The wind I think was blowing in all 3 games vs. Rockies, but I thought Tuesday was the only game that really penalized us - kept probably 3 balls in the park and we hit a lot of line drive outs that were just bad baseball fortune. Today, did not look like we were seeing the ball well vs. Abbott, lots of pop ups and lazy fly balls. Were making much better contact against their bullpen. I'm not overly worried........YET!!
  19. I would be VERY surprised if that's number is not below 100 two months from now. But I hope it is, I only wish the best for Javy.
  20. Yeah, I would say that almost every time Javy would come up when he played with us....why would you ever throw him anything near the strike zone...he will not take a walk....he's gonna swing. It never changed here. the hope is PCA is a bit more willing to evolve, he's still really young.
  21. Agreed, much like Javy there is really no reason to ever throw him a strike...now he'll hit some pitches out of the zone out of the park as well but I think you will see pitchers expand more and more an make him show he'll take a walk. And if he can make that adjustment and take some walks then the speed comes in, but that's a BIG IF!
  22. I wonder if their contracts stipulate a certain number of games max, so they can rotate their roster of 20 in and out of games throughout the year?
  23. Agreed, I think we had a couple of homers knocked down and we also hit several other line drives right into gloves - so I thought scoring the tying and winning runs on a check swing and flair respectively was leveling baseball fortune last night.
  24. We need a 1984 Rick Sutcliffe type get before the deadline. Sutt was 4-5 with a 5.15 ERA when we got him from Cleveland but everyone still saw it as a great pick up they just figured he was not motivated in Cleveland.
  25. I thought the baseball gods owed us a couple - and they delivered with the check swing hit by Bush and the blooper hit by Shaw. Lot's of very hard hit balls that found gloves throughout the game - so I thought baseball justice was served.
