  1. why are all of our deep line drives playable and other teams' are not?
  2. he's getting into hitter's counts like he knows the next pitch will be fat and he's making up his mind early to swing. 2-1 is still a hitter's count.
  3. and it won't make a difference because you can't yell someone into not making fielding errors. True. But if I have to watch sucky baseball then I'd prefer a few Lou blowups just for the entertainment value. I hope he doesn't keep that stuff in the locker room. i don't think he'll yell at izturis like he yelled at dempster. demspter is a goofball.
  4. I'm well aware that Jones had a good year last year, at least against RHP. That's why we should have traded him in the off-season. I'm more than happy to put Murton's .350 OBP in the 2 hole against RHP or LHP. Please stop with the Murton man crushes! I like the guy too but goodness, he'll get his chance. It's not like has been killing the ball or getting on base any other way. It's game 8. exactly the reason he should be playing. No it isn't. Murton isn't a lock in the lineup but he will get plenty of at bats. the reason he may not look great is that it's game 8, which is my point. give him time means give him some plate appearances. so far, it looks like floyd is going to get most of them. Why does it look like Floyd is going to get most of them? They have each started the same number of games even though they have only faced 1 left-hander. That suggests Murton will get more starts, not Floyd. the trend appears to be floyd playing more and murton playing less. The trend? It's gone Murton/Floyd/Murton/Floyd/Murton/Murton/Floyd/Floyd. That's not much of a trend just to have two Floyd's in a row after two Murton's in a row. murton hasn't played much in the last 3 games after being inexplicably lifted in favor of theriot after jones came into play right against milwaukee. can we just drop this now? i don't feel like arguing with you for the better part of the game. personally, i don't have the attention span.

  6. 2 times our pitchers have had easy double play balls hit right at them and 2 times they've blown it. so predictable and so cubs.

  9. derosa is a better option than theriot, but i think the point is that he needs a day off. i don't think theriot is that good at all.

  11. The latter. He's been missing his spots regularly. seems like we're swinging and missing a lot.
  12. is this pitcher looking THAT good or are we just terrible today?
  13. he's been a lot worse this year. he can't remember anyone's name at all.
  14. expected less from game thread? this is our time to act crazy.
  15. soriano's pressing too hard. he needs to get patient and wait for his pitch.
  16. ownership has turned over quite a bit from the old guard. you've got a lot of owners who probably hope to sell to the highest bidder sometime within the next 10-15 years. I don't see them being anywhere near as exclusionary as they may have been 20 years ago. the owners can afford to exclude high bidders. these are the cubs, there is bound to be a bidding war. regardless of how high cuban's bid is, there's bound to be plenty of other similar, if not superior, bids. Possibly. But if one bidder is $20-50m more than 2nd (quite possible), there's likely to be some lawsuits coming out of any rejection. i don't think the lawsuits would come to anything. i believe that when the trib purchased the cubs, there were existing higher bids. the owners reserve the right to reject offers if they feel it's in the best interest of the ballclub. baseball teams are not independent entities.

  18. He certainly could have said "I'm not interested", but he didn't. Reading between the lines it looks like whether or not Wrigley is included in the purchase would be an important detail for him, as it should be. i just know that he won't be approved by the league. and it sucks that reinsdorf is going to have that much pull with the league to keep cuban out. politically, reinsdorf would sabotage him. the whole thing smacks of collusion, because it's a conflict of interest for jerry to have a vote at all, anyway. sadly, he wouldn't need a vote, just a phone and a few friends around the league. no way reinsdorf pulls that off. He tried when Cuban bought the Mavs and ended up being the only person who voted against it. I can't see him swaying over half the league to his side. No chance at all he has way more influence in baseball than in basketball. in the NBA, he was outvoted 29-1, but he's not close with stern, but is with selig. Correct. Reinsdorf would be a problem here. add to that the aristocracy in baseball and you have a pretty well-defensed anti-renegade league.
  19. Yeah I miss County Stadium as well. Another co-worker that used to live in the Milwaukee area agrees as well. That place was a much more enjoyable place to take in a ballgame. ugh, county staium was little more than a slab of concrete and asphalt. i hated that place. i haven't seen a game at miller, yet. i have tickets to the june 4th game, i'll reserve judgement until then. and i think bernie brewer still slides into a mug of beer, although i may be wrong. yep, i'm right. http://siggy99.mlblogs.com/photos/ballparkstour/millerbernies.jpg He goes down a slide, but I don't see the mug of beer. It's just a slide. true dat. i think they wanted to make the new stadium a bit more family-friendly. wisconsin is a state of alcoholism.
  20. i think, on the positive side, whoever buys the cubs won't run the team as a money-making business. while i doubt that the team ever runs in the red, the profit motive won't be there for a new owner as it was there for the tribune. while, factoring in inflation and what-not, the team is guaranteed to make a ton of money long-term anyway--the new owners won't be concerned with turning 10-50 mil in profit from year to year.

  22. From what I had heard, it's the coach of Wichita State. turgeon. a KU alum.

  24. i agree totally.
  25. how is he going to earn it if there's no open spot in the rotation? small sample size for guzman aside, miller is a pitcher on the downside of his career without any effective pitches. lou, despite professing his love for the 5-man roattion recently, is skipping miller at every opportunity. what does that say about his faith in the man's ability to get people out? miller's just not good unless his fastball suddenly makes a reappearance. why not try a guy who has had past success at the minor league level, still has effective pitches, and will probably only improve as oppsed to a crafty veteran that isn't crafty? What does it say abou this faith in Guzman that he won't start him over Miller. This is the manager who won 115 games with Seattle let's not forget (I lived there in that season.... wow) so did i. i moved there in april and went to a ton of games. it was sad to see interest in the mariners wane in the successive seasons. Yes, it was after that season that I moved.... hmmmm, maybe I need to move to Chicago.... i kept telling my friends there that it would be a cubs-mariners WS. ah well.
