trying to hit the ball on the ground isn't wise. Really? Neither is trying to hit the ball in the air. more hits will come via the ground than air. Obviously if you are leaving line drives out of the conversation you can't leave line drives out of the equation. the intent should be to hit line drives all of the time. Obviously. But your still more likely to get a hit on the ground vs. a fly ball. i never said you should try to hit fly balls. i believe that trying to hit fly balls is counter-productive as well. what i said is that you should never try to hit ground balls. regardless of the situation--in any situation, a line drive is going to generally be most productive. I agree in most situations, but not necessarilly in a hit-and-run. With the infield moving, a ball on the ground can easily be a base hit. Or you can line into a DP like barrett just did. minimizing the amount of times you attempt to hit line drives is never a wise decision. it will decrease your overall runs scored throughout the course of the year, which will decrease your total wins. assuming that a line drive is going to be a line drive out is also unwise. for one, with the infield NOT moving that line drive might not have been a DP, and two, that was unlucky. a ball hit that hard will usually find a gap, leading to more runs. hindsight is 20/20. i'll take barrett's line drive every day of the week than a weak groundball.
