  1. What was their rate on 3rd downs? You're right though, this is one of the problems I have with some of the Football Outsiders stuff. It's harder to do "rate" stats in football than baseball because of situations. I understand yards per play is trying to evaluate a defense independent of that team's own offense that forces them to be on the field too much. But you can have a relatively low ypp but not get off the field because you can't get a stop on 3rd down or force turnovers. Not saying either of those were the case with the Bears though, haven't looked at the numbers and compared. Actually, I think that's the beauty of the Football Outsiders stuff. As I just mentioned, DVOA takes situations into account. It incorporates things like time left in the game, down, distance, field position, etc. and attempts to put a value on those things. That's the type of thing you don't get with your standard run of the mill metrics. i don't know all that much about dvoa, but how does it weight important situations in tight games as opposed to frivolous situations in blowouts? and isn't the mere fact that a weighting system exists suggest a human pollution in all of it?
  2. seriously, though, what is mike tomlin's job description, i mean, other than watching a team he has no direct input into win a super bowl?
  3. I probably should've kept reading before posting. no worries. but it appears that the bears defense WAS pretty bad in the 4th quarter last year. i can't find 4th quarter 3rd down conversion %, but in terms of time of possession and scoring, they either tired at the end or their play-calling was totally chicken [expletive]. but probably both. i though lovie and turner made some really gutless decisions last year late in games.
  4. actually, i take back what i said, i was misled. the bears were actually 6th in the NFL last year in preventing 3rd down conversions. they were at 34.9%, pittsburgh led at 31.5%. i stand corrected. http://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-3rd-down-conversion-pct
  5. i know that they were 3rd worst in the league on 3rd downs. don't have the actual numbers, but i'll look.
  6. well, part of that is that the defense couldn't get off the field after 3rd downs. they were terrible at it, for whatever reason. it's possible that this "stick 'em between the sticks" tampa-2 philosophy is less effective now that the players are older. we need more pressure on the qb so that the linebackers don't have so much pressure on them to make difficult tackles on 3rd down.
  7. ugh, those [expletive] packer writers always talk about charles martin as a [expletive] hero. [expletive] them.
  8. Same here. one of us will be happy, the other crushed. ps- you're gonna be crushed.
  9. after the debacle that was illinois-missouri, i need a win badly.
  10. He is now, and the Bears should be making that call. Jeff Garcia believes he is still a starter in this league, so I doubt he'll even listen to a call from the Bears. Not only that but I really don't want Cutler to have another pissy fit like he had in Denver. Jeff Garcia is no Matt Cassell but I still wouldn't take that risk. Pissy fit? Bringing in a backup is nothing like looking to trade away your starter while trading for another starter. yeah, i think there's about zero chance that the best quarterback in the history of the franchise is afraid of the great old jeff garcia.
  11. And I'm willing to bet the Boise guy was looking out for Blount too and probably didn't just happen to pass right by him after the game. Big deal! It's football. Blount had been saying for weeks that Oregon was going to whip BSU's ass. I'm sure that this guy said something like "Nice [expletive] ass whooping". I don't care if he said he banged Blount's momma last night though. It's just talk. Being a jerk doesn't merit suspensions. That's ridiculous. i have to disagree with you, there. if he wouldn't have started hopping around and going nuts and running into the stands and then fighting his own teammates it would have been awesome. a single punch to the guy's grill in that situation would have been a very human response. i think a a lot of people could identify with it. everybody wants to punch the post-game [expletive]-talker in the face, especially if said post-game [expletive]-talker lays his hands on you.
  12. How do you hire such a guy? this the same idiot that got fired at BC because he thought he was good enough to coach an NFL team?
  13. he's still zeroing in on receivers but you can never fault his arm strength, he's got some talent.
  14. he isn't getting suspended. now i wouldn't have a problem with him getting a game, but there's a big difference between trash talking (happens all the time) and cold cocking a guy, followed by hitting a teammate in the face, trying to go after opposing fans and requiring several people to get you under control. if he'd done what most normal people do in the face of taunting - shove the other guy back, yell a little bit - he'd still be on the team. it would have been funny if he had just decked him and kept walking.
  15. that is amazing. i'm going to start saying that.
  16. why can't bowman just stay healthy?
  17. mizzou football is to illinois football what illinois basketball is to mizzou basketball. even when they have a down year, i doubt we win.
  18. who knows? one of my friends has to work in the QC the next morning, he may bail.
  19. i won't post because i'll be there at the 50 yeard line, 20 rows up. in-laws with season tickets, gotta love it. unfortunately that means behaving myself.
  20. you should go make yourself useful and spend some more time looking stuff up.
  21. his best friends are dick van patten and mr. kotter, i don't hold his opinion in high regard.
  22. I hope you're right, but I could see other teams seeing that Pace is having issues with a small guy and line up a LB or something on him... He looked better in the later drives. It could be a concern, but the Bears were giving help to St. Clair on a bunch of plays last year. Giving Pace some help on a few plays, if the situation calls for it, would still be an improvement. Yeah....it was just one game, and a preseason one at that. I'm not overly concerned yet. he doesn't usually see freakshows like the 3-4. he's played in the NFC most of his career, and even HE hasn't faced many schemes that rush midget defensive ends/"outside linebackers" and line up free safeties at the middle linebacker spots and giant fatasses at NT.
  23. i'm not saying he was good at all, just that the starting qb went down and it wasn't the end of the world.
  24. I missed this comment earlier, but I have two questions. 1. What, in your mind, make the 3-4 defense a "gimmicky" scheme? 2. Do you feel that the Tampa 2 defense is also a "gimmicky" scheme? If you don't consider it a gimmick, please explain why. i only consider it a gimmicky scheme because the packers run it, of course. but don't worry, they'll get their dismantling soon. and the tampa-2 is about as conventional as defenses get.
