  1. 6 runs ought to be enough, so I can't blame the offense.
  2. Mmm, Eyre sets a new mark for pitches in a game over the last few years, now he's back in action 2 days later. I suspect Dusty is going to ride Scotty like a pony.
  3. Forgot to mention, since Dunn batted last inning and is unlikely to bat again it just seems silly to leave him in LF with Lee and Aram up. Unfortunately the Reds got away with it.
  4. If the Reds want to leave Dunn in LF with a 1 run lead and righty pull hitters coming up then more power to them.
  5. If I were the Reds I'd be tempted to pinch run for Dunn and put a defensive guy in LF next inning.
  6. So is Eyre available? I would guess no.
  7. Apparently you can pitch like crap and still beat the Reds. Who knew?
  8. Is Williams really big enough for fat jokes now? I haven't seen him play since last year.
  9. Jones sucks, but let's not overreact. Nah, let's do.
  10. Garçon. Because he's a French tablesetter.
  11. I'm not an expert either but I've read that roids make your muscles grow too quickly for your connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments. If you build up naturally those tissues are supposed to toughen up as your muscles grow.
  12. I had totally forgotten about the "Robes" Pierre idea. Maybe it is a little off base for an athlete, but it works for history geeks like me. I don't get "Slap Nasty" at all. If you want to go that direction why not just "Slappy"? I like that one.
  13. I don't know about that. The Cubs have a very low committment 2-3 years down the road. They shouldn't be guaranteeing anything to Perez, Rusch or Jones beyond this year. And he went a bit long on the middle relief. But he has much bigger faults than "saddling the payroll" with bad contracts. Perez, Rusch, Eyre, Howry, Jones, Dempster. These guys add up to a sizable chunk of payroll and I don't think any of them are worth it. Dempster might be, but I don't see how his track record justified his contract. I do agree with Tim though, the amount of roster space these guys take up might actually be more annoying than their salaries. Hard call there.
  14. The Trib guys will regret this when they realize Hendry has saddled the payroll with a bunch of unwise and expensive multi-year committments.
  15. Dorothy (announcer: be patient folks, the ball is coming from somewhere over the rainbow.)
  16. It's only thin if you want a big name.
  17. Would that make the cutoff man the elusive pot of gold? Yes, good idea. When Pierre throws from deep CF the cutoff man should be referred to as "the pot of gold".
  18. I'd rather have a name that refers to his throwing. Slap hitters are common enough(Neif!) but Pierre's arm is a rare specimen. Snail Mail(announcer: "ball is coming folks, please wait while Juan licks the stamp") The Rag(for a rag-like arm) The Leprechaun(because every time Juan throws you see a rainbow)
  19. 1. Furcal has more skills than just speed 2. One stupid deal by one stupid team does not shift an entire market for players. I heard a tidbit a few months ago, I think was a secondhand account of something Beane said, that since all the post-Moneyball hubbabaloo, OBP is starting to get valued properly, and speed is now a skill that is undervalued. Furcal has other skills, but there is no way in hell he gets his contract without the "speedy base-stealer" label.
  20. The Furcal deal has inflated the price of speed quite a bit. Hard to see it as undervalued now. Pierre has been overrated for a while too on account of his speed and he's going to get way too big a deal, hopefuly not from the Cubs. The Furcal deal inflated the price of leadoff hitters (still TBD by Pierre's next contract), not speed. It's a fairly significant difference. I don't think there will be any significant difference once the market works itself out. Any fast base-stealer with otherwise average ability will be getting a big raise. Corey won't though, not until his overall numbers improve to an acceptable level.

  22. Your economics don't make sense. When a resource becomes scarcer its price goes up, not down. The non-steroid era will not see a devaluation of power. If anything, the decreased presence of power throughout MLB will make it even more impactful for teams that do have it. A guy with 40 HR power is going to be more of a difference-maker than in the late 90's.
  23. Speed is too expensive, and it got a lot moreso after the Furcal contract. Pierre and others like him are going to be horribly overpaid soon. Smart GM's won't bother with SB because there are better ways to spend money.
