  1. Increasingly I'm leaning towards wanting the Cubs to fall out of contention quickly and have a fire sale midseason. The 2007 team has the potential to be awesome if all the young pitchers and Pie get a chance to play and some of the vets are traded for more near-MLB-ready talent. Murton and Cedeno should also be a lot better with a full year of seasoning. Honestly I can see the Cubs as a WS favorite for 2007 if Hendry can hold a successful fire sale at the break. But unfortunately what's most likely is the Cubs will yet again be a lame darkhorse all year until eliminated in September.
  2. Neifi starts a min. of 50 games at SS. I guarantee it. Interesting. Several months ago when Neifi signed, you were guaranteeing much more playing time than that. I guess if it keeps shrinking, you'll eventually get it right. I'd be very surprised, barring injury to Cedeno, if Neifi gets more than 20 starts. If Cedeno gets hurt, I wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs revisit the Tejada-Prior talks mid-season. 50 starts minimum at SS, and that assumes Cedeno has no slumps or defensive issues. Neifi will also get numerous starts at 2B and some at 3B. Remember, Neifi can swing left-handed and Hairston and Cedeno can't. I also can't see Walker sticking around long. As soon as any contender has an injury at 2B Walker is on the next plane out of town and Neifi's playing time goes up. ARam will get some days off in the 2nd half, and also for cold days in April. I still have full confidence Neifi will get his 400 AB's, and very likely more.
  3. Maybe it's just me, but when I look at all the young near-MLB-ready talent on the Cubs I can't help thinking that the 2007 team would have been fantastic if Hendry had treated 2006 as a building year and not blown big wads of cash on mediocre vets in a half-assed attempt to contend right away.
  4. Even if Williamson's arm falls off Eyre's and Howry's contracts would still be lousy deals. That's your opinion. If they pitch well, how could you call them bad deals? We have a starting staff that at times, take 100+ pitches to complete 5 innings. The bullpen is very important in today's game. It's my opinion that the money was worth the risk. Now we just have to hope they perform. & if the Cubs don't take that risk & don't pay top dollar for Eyre & Howry there BP is the same as LY & that is terrible. Hendry did the right thing in this case. No deal can be evaluated without considering opportunity cost, which in this case is 3 years of Jacque F. Jones at $5M per. Not only will Eyre and Howry have to pitch well enough to justify their huge paychecks, they will also have to pitch well enough to make me forget Jones is in right field for the next 3 years. Not likely.
  5. I just feel that if you put up numbers as horrible as Corey did in 2005 you haven't earned the right to say no if your team asks you to play winter ball. I would have nothing but goodwill for Corey if he had played winter ball as requested.
  6. Neifi starts a min. of 50 games at SS. I guarantee it.

Now we just have to hope they perform. When you give out humongous contracts somebody shouldn't have to get injured to justify the expenditure. I also just don't think these guys will pitch nearly well enough to earn their checks. I'd much rather have taken their money and put it towards a better RF than Jacque Jones, with whom we're tragically stuck for the next 3 years.
  8. Even if Williamson's arm falls off Eyre's and Howry's contracts would still be lousy deals.
  9. Who will be playing for SF after Bonds & Alou get hurt? Even when they're active, does defense count here? :D Has anybody made an estimate of how many runs the Giants OF defense gives away relative to an average defensive OF?
  10. I'm much more embarassed about the way Cubs fans treated Corey than the Cubs. I totally agree but I also have to say Corey's refusal to play winter ball merits a few boos next time he plays at Wrigley, if he ever does. That actually did get me a little angry at him. Other than that I have no problem with him as a person.
  11. Wow, talk about pessimism. If Konerko gets injured, Buerhle's arm falls off, Posednik breaks his leg, Garland and Dye regress, Thome and Contreras realize how old they are, and Williams trades Garland and Garcia for Jeff Fassero, the White Sox could be in trouble too. All the bad things I mentioned are reasonably likely to happen. I don't expect all of them to happen, but I don't think any more than half of them would be required to render the Cubs' offense mediocre. Bottom line for me is that way too many rolls of the dice have to fall our way for a good offense. Most of the posts in this thread reflect what I would consider a best case scenario, or something close.
  12. How many of you people have ever successfully done a serious musclebuilding weight program? Of the people I know who have done so none of them believe a 30+ year old man could stay as big as Sosa for 6 months while playing 5-6 baseball games per week at a peak level of performance. I have a lot of experience with weightlifting and I've known since the late 90's that sluggers were juicing, and all along I've been hearing protestations from non-lifters that I have no proof. You want proof, get over 30 years of age and bulk up to a football level and see what it takes and see how much recovery time is required. Sosa had some chemical help of some sort. There is no doubt in my mind.
  13. If everything goes right the offense could be good, but almost any team could say that. The O has the potential to be terrible if Jones/Pierre repeat their 2005 numbers and Murton/Cedeno tank. Lee could regress too, and the overrated Pierre won't even be much of a stealing threat if Neifi sees a lot of time in the 2 hole. Aram also has to be a lot healthier or everything falls apart.
  14. Sammy juiced. I find it difficult to believe otherwise.
  15. i don't think this is true. i think the burden of proof is actually on bonds, and bonds has to prove malicious intent, which he almost certainly can't, whether he took steroids or not. I'm not a lawyer but I'm guessing malice is not relevant in the case of true statements. Plenty of malicious statements have been printed about Josef Stalin, who has living relatives, but you can be sure none of Stalin's relatives will ever sue for libel because the malicious statements about him are true.
  16. 2003 NLCS was appallingly managed. Even if we get back to the playoffs we are at a severe disadvantage with Dusty calling the shots.
  17. I think kickass starting pitching and a greatly expanded payroll affected expectations just a tiny bit too. Don't you?
  18. I think the problem is that they spend 100 million when they could spend 10 million+ more. They look at the Cubs as something that should turn a profit. If people got the extra 10 mil they'd promptly bitch that it wasn't 20. Bottom line is that fans of a team that has the highest payroll in its league have no business complaining about money. It's like listening to Bill Gates complain about his taxes
  19. Dusty actually does sound supportive in the Miles article, so jeers to Kiley for poor writing. Having said that, I still think it's goofy for Dusty to even mention Cedeno's overaggressiveness or poor pitch selection when Dusty has a history of overlooking those traits in veterans.
  20. Thanks Bruce. Not the first time posters have ignored the whole story, and only focused on the part that fits their agenda. What adgenda is that? It is about time for this stuff to stop. Only time will tell what Dusty will do. I don't know if it's an "agenda" but I'd qualify it as a propensity to misrepresent stories and quotes to fit one's viewpoint. Did you think to click the link I included in the initial post? If you did you would have seen I included the entire Baker quote from the Suntimes article. Obviously the Herald article contained a more complete quote that included missing nuance, but I didn't see that until later.
  21. Thanks Bruce. Not the first time posters have ignored the whole story, and only focused on the part that fits their agenda. I hadn't seen the Herald version of the quote when I started the thread. I posted the whole quote from the suntimes article by Mike Kiley, so if you have a beef about agendas take it to Kiley.
  22. I thought the bolded quote was funny because it perfectly describes Neifi's whole career. Of course you'll never hear Dusty mention that. http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-kiley21.html
  23. If you think about it, it is sorta embarrassing to be a starter at the same position as Todd Hollandsworth was last opening day.
  24. Unless you're playing catcher your defensive position is just a matter of where you stand on the field. Technically a left fielder could be considered a second baseman who is playing deep and shaded to the left.
  25. Stupid team, stupid player. They both deserve this mess.
