  1. This midseason or next midseason? 2007 midseason. Maybe it's just me, but I'm getting a bad feeling about Izzy durability-wise. It sure isn't just you. He's not in southern California anymore either. Guy has hamstring issues and arthritis, and it's really cold in Chicago in April and early May. I'm not optimistic about him. He sucks anyway. He's been fragile so far, and we've seen this show a few times recently. Last year he landed on the DL with a bad hammy and again with back pain, and that was in balmy LA. Then there's the elbow. Anybody playing GM for 2007 might want to leave a few mil available for a midseason replacement SS. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Neifi return as a half-season rental.

  4. I strongly suspect Izturis' lack of durability (plus poor offense) will cause him to wear out his welcome by midseason. Hendry doesn't want the shame of another Nomar situation. Not sure which SS Hendry will target.
  5. We'll just have to agree to disagree then. I think Pierre's SB percentage would be terrible if he had to run on fastballs the great majority of the time, but there's no way to prove or disprove it without actually putting him in that situation.
  6. I disagree. And if teams constantly threw pitchouts with the pitcher up, that would work into Pierre's team's favor as it would waste pitches with the pitcher at the plate. Who said constant pitchouts? I said constant fastballs. We've all seen times where the P is facing the oppposing P, and he inexplicably tries to get too cute: eg. throwing too many breaking balls, nibbling at corners, etc. Don't you scream "just throw strikes!" at the TV? I do, and I can't see why a P would ever get the urge to get cute with Pierre on base and a P at the plate. The C would call for fastballs, and the P wouldn't argue.
  7. Not well enough to justify paying Pierre big bucks to bat 8th and get CS a bunch. nothing can justify pierre getting a contract but I think the idea that pitchers will only throw fastballs is incorrect. not only that but trying to justify a contract for him batting 8th is completely missing the point. the point is he hurts you less batting 8th - nobody wants him there. Some pitchers have bat speed, but lots of them can easily be overpowered by a good fastball. You don't have to throw them anything else. Even at leadoff Pierre's SB percentage is at the extreme low end of what anyone will tolerate. Batting him 8th puts him in a place where his percentage would be low enough that no competent manager would put up with it.

  9. Simply throwing a fastball is no guarentee that a guy will get cought stealing. Most bases are stolen on the pitcher's delivery to home not on the ptich they've thrown. However, you're point stands. Why pay Pierre big dollars at all? Just don't, he's not worth it. He wouldn't be CS every time, but if 80-90% of Pierre's SB attempts were on fastballs his percentage would be hideous, even moreso than it is already. He'd be better off not even trying. IMO he needs to be at the top of the order or nowhere, preferrably nowhere.
  10. If Pierre bats 8th he'll get CS a ton because opposing pitchers would just throw fastballs when he's on, and pitchouts would be more frequent too. He already gets CS way too much, at 8th it would be much worse. If you're paying Pierre big $ for his basestealing you can't bat him in front of a pitcher.
  11. I don't see why anyone would sign Pierre with the object of batting him down in the order. His ONLY value is as a table-setter for RBI men. He himself is lousy at driving in and advancing runners and he needs clear bases to do his running thing. Putting him down in the order means a no-hit defensive player and a pitcher would end up trying to drive him in. His defense is no consolation if he can't produce any offense. I say bat him leadoff or don't bother wasting money and a roster spot on him.
  12. Young pitchers get it after a few years of excellence, kind of like a junior Mafia guy getting "made". Z has done enough that I could see the capos opening the books for him.
  13. Cuse, Bonds is under such intense investigation by the feds that I really don't think he could get his hands on the stuff anymore without being caught. He could get it. He may also have a stockpile somewhere.
  14. Did anybody see this play? Was it really as bad as described above? http://www.rotoworld.com/content/clubhouse_news.aspx?sport=MLB&majteam=DET
  15. Stuff like Hill getting a chance to take his lumps is exactly why I wanted the Cubs to fall out of the race quickly in 2006. I had hoped Pie would be here too, and that at least one other rookie SP would create some excitement.
  16. Why do people wish Neifi the best? If Neifi does well in Detroit Hendry will kick himself for letting him go and try to get a similar player to replace him. If Neifi fails in Detroit Hendry might actually conclude that the Cubs shouldn't acquire Neifi-type players in the future. Maybe Neifi is a swell guy and all, but it's in the Cubs' best interest that Neifi becomes a definitive failure in Detroit.
  17. Heck, he'll overpay even if it isn't necessary. But strangely, he didn't overpay for his #1 target last season, Furcal. I'm hoping Pierre asks for too much. Yeah but Hendry had Cedeno as a backup plan, and Hendry has shown he will tolerate all-glove no-hit players in the MIF. He will not tolerate 2 rookies in the OF next year, so Murton/Pie is not a likely plan A. Hendry also talks about leadoff like it's a position, so in his mind Pierre's departure would leave a big hole in the offense. Murton won't be a rookie anymore. Rookie-ish? Well, he's not a "proven" player anyway, not enough for a Murton/Pie scenario to be realistic. Maybe for another team, not this one.

  19. I really think Hendry has earmarked a big bag of cash for Pierre. He will overpay if necessary.
  20. I'm guessing he's indulging in room-service munchies on the road. I'd be huge if I were in hotels half the summer with unlimited funds for takeout food and pay-per-view movies.
  21. I'm sure Hendry would prefer Soriano in the OF. Hendry likes ballcatchers in the MIF.
  22. 100 losses with a $95 million payroll would be a glorious anti-triumph. Cubs are now at 56-86, need to go 6-14 from here. It will be tough, but they can do it.
  23. That about sums it up. I still haven't seen any evidence that Miller would give the Cubs a significant discount to re-sign, and considering that his next contract may be his last baseball payday, he has every reason to get the most he can.
  24. Ditka was much worse. I really think he's tone-deaf.
