Aramis saw CLee turn down a 4/48 contract. If a bad defensive LF who has never put up a .900 OPS is turning down 4/48 then I can't blame Aram for deciding to play the market.
Agree, if Baker were defintely not being extended then there would be zero reason not to get rid of him immediately. Keeping him through the end of the season only makes sense if an extension is still a possibility. Of course there is also the possibility that Dusty is just finishing the season because Jimbo is a conflict-averse wimp who doesn't have the balls to fire Dusty.
I think "acceptable" is a stretch. I want the Cubs to do whatever they can to motivate Aramis to hustle more. And I really wish he had the self motivation to do it on his own. I am not happy with the laziness. But I want to see them win over all else. And Aramis's production is far too difficult to replace for us to justify running him out of town based on laziness. If this team had more good hitters, but were still coming up short, I might be more open to the idea of replacing him. But unless you can guarantee similar or better production, you simply cannot get rid of Aramis. And when the media and fans gang up on a player, it can affect management decisions. They already think speed and defense are more important than OBP and SLG. I don't need them feeling comfortable dumping a guy based on laziness when he's one of the few capable of providing OBP and SLG. All number-crunching aside, shameless displays of laziness are arrogant and insulting. It's a character issue, which makes it hard to overlook. It also makes the games a lot less fun to watch. Sports is entertainment after all.
BAD idea for Aram. How do you think the fans in the Bronx would like Aram casually jogging the bases? How about the NY media? If he thinks he gets a lot of guff in Chicago for not hustling somebody should remind him it would be a thousand times worse in New York.
that doesn't mean it shouldn't be fixed. I agree. But Aramis is one of the few competent guys on offense and folks want to run him out of town for not hustling. I don't think anyone wants him run out of town. We want him to stop these obvious displays of laziness. It's insulting to the fans and to his teammates. God forbid we ever get a team where all the stars act that way. Can you imagine if DLee, Barret, Jones, and Aram all decided they'd start loafing on the basepaths whenever the mood struck? What fan would even want to watch a team like that, let alone cheer for it?
Personally I find Aram's attitude arrogant and insulting -- "hey, I'm a big star. Us stars can loaf when we feel like it. Hustling on every play is for lesser players". What type of example does that set for the rest of the team? I don't care how good his numbers are, laziness is unacceptable.
When a team needs offense as desperately as the Cubs it has to make defense a secondary priority. I'd even be willing to put up with Pierre's girlie arm if I really liked his offensive game.
If anything he is less desirable now. He's 33 years old, his range isn't what it used to be, and his contract is hideous. If nobody wanted him in 2004 it's pretty hard to imagine anybody wanting him now.
Selected shortstops by VORP: Gonzalez BOS 8.2 Uribe CHW 0.1 Crosby OAK -2.3 Perez CHC -4.9 Adams TOR -5.9 Everett HOU -7.0 Barmes COL -11.2 Blecchh! Neifi actually could be a (small) upgrade for Toronto and Houston. Colorado is deep in infielders and might bring up Ian Stewart to play short instead of making a trade. Small upgrade? Microscopic is more like it. Not even close to being worth $2.5 million per season.
