  1. Yeah, that's how I see it too. We had some very questionable pitchers in the rotation coming into 2006 and Hendry's awesome insurance policy was Wade Freakin Miller. That's not a low risk strategy, regardless of the money involved. Excatly. It would be low risk insurance if you get him for 1M, but you also get some other guys who WILL be healthy in April. Yeah, Miller is a guy you acquire as supplemental insurance, not as your primary insurance.

  3. It's obvious Miller won't help anybody this year which means his trade value is zero, he's not under contract past this season, and the Cubs are out of the contention. The only reason I can see for not releasing him is to offer him an extension. The gamble would be that he recovers his velocity and gives the Cubs a bargain deal for 2007 out of gratitude.
  4. The kids will play hard for any manager. I don't give a hoot what the vets do. They can spend the rest of 2006 in the Bahamas for all I care. I'd actually prefer to see Aram do weight training for the rest of the summer instead of playing ball.
  5. Even when Demp gets the save he looks like crap.
  6. Marshall deserves a trade for his performance today.
  7. I want a squeeze play. I'm sure it would work.
  8. Walks the leadoff man on 4 straight pitches.
  9. I don't think there's any insinuation or subtlety on Dusty's part. He has blatantly stated that Hendry has given him a bunch of players that can't win. IMO that's the ONLY thing that could have broken Jimbo's weird love affair with Dusty, and thank God, Dusty was dumb enough to do it. Or maybe smart enough. Lots of speculation that he wants out, but he needs to stay employable, so he's doing the same thing he did in SF, which earned him a fat contract. Nah. I don't think he's that clever or subtle. He strikes me as an ordinary idiot with a big ego and I take his excuses at face value, including the "horses" stuff.

  11. Dusty's job was probably safe until he started talking about his missing horses, which was an obvious way of saying he couldn't win with the players Hendry gave him. If you like your job it's a bad idea to embarrass your boss in public.
  12. Weird coincidence, but I was just thinking about 2002 today and how much slack Baylor got relative to Dusty. 2002 was remembered was as the definition of an absolute rock-bottom disaster of a baseball season, but it was actually BETTER than 2006. Considering the payrolls of both seasons only increases the disparity. If Baylor deserved to be fired then Dusty deserves something much worse.
  13. Pierre has got to be traded before he cools down again. No extension please.
  14. That should command a solid C-list prospect in trade.
  15. I hate that incompetent management has forced fans to root for Pierre and other veteran bums to play well enough that they can traded, but not so well that management stupidly re-signs them.
  16. Did he pass away or get traded? If not, where is he, and what is he doing?
  17. It would be fitting if Womack got his last MLB at bat in a Cubs uniform.
  18. Laughable reasoning here by De Luca. He wants the Cubs to make a huge financial committment based on 116 at bats. No offense to Mr. Miles, but stuff like this is why I don't think much of the intelligence of the average sportswriter.
  19. Ugh. Looks like no retooling for 2007. Respectability (read 'job-saving') will be Dusty's goal.
  20. CLee was good in 2004 and is having a real good year in 2006 but the rest of his career isn't particularly impressive and he'll be 31 next June so he'll be pretty old at the end of a 4 or 5 year contract. I say let the Yankees overpay him.
  21. Isn't it supposed to be pernounced "An-hal" or something? The 'g' being silent. Does anyone here know how to pronounce Ferengi?
  22. if dempster did his job we'd be 32-44 with a .421 winning percentage. that's a heck of a lot better than 28-48 with a .386 winning percentage You're kidding right? mostly. though with the way dempster has walked people his whole career, i'm open to the possibility that maybe dempster just isn't that great of a closer. I'm open to the possibility that he's just a bad pitcher. He had a nice run of 4 and a half months and 60-something innings as a reliever and he got a $15.5 million deal out of it. I was one of those who felt his track record didn't justify such a large $$ committment.
  23. He would have been gone in 2003 if he were white because of his "hot weather" comments.
  24. In all seriousness I would give away Jacque Jones to the Yankees. All I would ask in return is that they take Neifi too.
