  1. I wouldn't blame Glendon if he decides against announcing retirement if doing so allows him to collect the balance of his contract payments. Otherwise he should just officially quit now. His odds of making a successful comeback in 2008 are minuscule, certainly not worth the risk to his health.
  2. The Rays WILL get a young player of Hill's stature for Crawford, from the Cubs or whomever. Bear in mind we have to outbid 28 other teams. Offering a bunch of 2nd-tier prospects won't do it.
  3. I thought that at first too. But an outfield for the next 5-10 years of Murton, Pie, Crawford looks pretty darn good to me. With regards to Vance saying they'd want Hill. I was thinking maybe they'd take either Veal or Gallagher in a package with some other prospects as well. Not really sure though. Crawford will be more expensive than that. To get him we'd have to give up someone we'd hate to lose for 2007.
  4. With Pie so close I wouldn't get in the bidding for Crawford. We just need a stopgap in CF.
  5. Zito has been good and durable for 6 years now. I think some people here underestimate the value of proven durability in a productive starting pitcher. I'd say he deserves about $12M/yr. I could also see overpaying for him a bit if the market is thin.
  6. The above quote makes it clear that Pierre views this as the payday he's been working for all his life, most likely the biggest payday he'll ever see, so we can forget about any significant discount for the Cubs.
  7. I would be ok with it if Lee is at 1st, Ramirez is at 3rd, ARod is at SS and Soriano is at 2nd! Having one of the best offensive infields of all time would be a good thing.
  8. Is he the best manager you ever played for because he plays you everyday and lets you bat first no matter how bad you are at getting on base? One manager gets you to a World Series. Another one gets you to last place. The guy who gets you to last place is the best manager you ever played for? :drunken: I think it's all getting much more clear why people like to play for Dusty Baker. It's all about "veteran" playing time. Add in Nevin's comments about making a call to Dusty this offseason and it's pretty clear mediocre veterans are his biggest supporters. One thing I learned from Dusty's tenure is how self-interested most baseball players are. When a player says "so-and-so is the best manager", it means "so-and-so is the best manager FOR ME", not for the TEAM.
  9. Pierre was our most valuable trading chip at the deadline, now he'll walk and we'll get nothing but some draft picks, which obviously doesn't help us compete next year. But then maybe we'll just end up paying full market value to bring him back. Either way the situation has been badly bungled.
  10. And due to its price it should also guarantee some holes remain unfilled elsewhere. BTW, have all you folks forgotten about Glendon? Have you penciled him into the rotation?
  11. If what the media reported is correct, it was likely because Hendry thought people would actually be happy/impressed that he turned down a deal for some kids, waited it out, and finally got the Dodgers to crack and give him a former All Star and Gold Glove winner...who just happens to be overpaid, not 100%, and not to be very good. I could see that. Funny thing is that smart observers are unhappy/unimpressed that prospects may have been turned down. If you are going to tell a lie it may as well be one that makes you look good, not bad.
  12. So Hendry lied about being offered prospects? Why would he do that?
  13. Wade Boggs batted leadoff and he was no speedster, he was just a guy with a .415 OBP.
  14. That says it all. Was Hendry so loyal to Maddux that he just gave him away? Were there any truth to reports that the Dodgers were willing to give us Matt Kemp? I doubt it and I really hope that wasn't true. Right after the Maddux trade Hendry said the Dodgers had been offering 2 high level prospects. Were those names ever revealed?
  15. right. loss of a step in speed = going from hitting .290 in the majors to not being able to hit in college with an aluminum bat. that statement makes a whole lot of sense. How many infield hits does the guy get? He loses that step and he loses a lot of hits. Seems sensible to me. And you'd have to put him at a corner OF position, where his offense would be pathetic.
  16. Pierre: 32 walks in 720 PA. His BB/PA peaked at .075 in 2003 and has steadily declined since, it's at .045 for 2006. This is yet another thing that makes Pierre dependent on speed. If he loses a step he couldn't even play for a decent college team.
  17. I'm resigned to the fact that we're stuck with Izturis. He should bat no higher than eighth. When Zambrano pitches...he might should hit ninth. Don't worry, Neifi will be back at the deadline. Izzy will be on the DL. Couldn't we just use Theroit, or god forbid, even cedeno? Atleast they are cheaper. In a pennant race? We're talking about Jim Hendry here. Looks like the Tigers will make the playoffs, and if they win the WS or Neifi makes any positive contribution whatsoever I can absolutely guarantee that Hendry will try to get Neifi back at the deadline next year if we are in contention. I can absolutely argue I will shoot his head, if he does that. If Neifi gets a World Championship ring Jimbo will want him back even with a .500 OPS.

  19. The Yankees (and possibly the RSox) are the only teams that should have a $20M bullpen. $20M is too great a percentage of the payroll for every other team.
  20. I find it really disturbing that a strained hammy caused a purple bruise. Has anyone here ever heard of such of a thing? It certainly doesn't inspire confidence. I had a horrible hammy episode early this year and I would've been scared to death if my leg had turned purple from it. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060922&content_id=1676606&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

  22. I don't want a $20 million bullpen. No more expensive relievers please.
  23. If the Orioles decided to completely rebuild, I could see Tejada being acquired without the Cubs having to trade Zambrano. But I think it would take one hell of a package because a lot of teams would be lining up to make that deal. Maybe, but if we don't offer Z then an alternative package would have to be MASSIVE, I'm talking the whole freakin farm. I can't see it happening. Again, if I ran the O's Z would be in the discussion or there would be no discussion.
  24. I don't see how we get Tejada without giving up Z. If I were running the O's I'd tell Hendry not to waste my time with Tejada talk unless Z was in the discussion.
  25. Blanco didn't say anything you wouldn't hear a player say about any future HOFer, but I get your point. I've never liked the idea of bringing in over-the-hill vets for a mentoring/teaching role. The coaching staff is paid for that stuff, and if they can't do it then someone else should have their jobs, and expensive veteran players who can't perform just eat up payroll and roster spots that could be spent on players who can still play up to their salary.
