  1. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/cardinals-make-brendan-ryan-available.html Why do I feel like we're in on a joke to which only the Cubs and the Dodgers know the answer?
  2. This year's nominees are: Roberto Alomar Carlos Baerga Jeff Bagwell Harold Baines Bert Blyleven Bret Boone Kevin Brown John Franco Juan Gonzalez Marquis Grissom Lenny Harris Bobby Higginson Charles Johnson Barry Larkin Al Leiter Edgar Martinez Tino Martinez Don Mattingly Fred McGriff Mark McGwire Raul Mondesi Jack Morris Dale Murphy John Olerud Rafael Palmeiro Dave Parker Tim Raines Kirk Rueter Benito Santiago Lee Smith B.J. Surhoff Alan Trammell Larry Walker I only see Blyleven getting in, maybe Alomar and Bagwell.
  3. I believe you are correct. I was responding specifically to daske17's claim that Branyan is the "worst option available". He, and apparently WSR as well, seems to be underrating him substantially. If the team was looking for a bench player I agree that Branyan isn't a bad option. But as an everyday 1B he would be the worst. He hasn't shown that he has the ability to last a full season as a starter. His OBP is mediocre at best and his best year came at 33. Maybe he isn't the worst option but he's darn near close.
  4. Oh my God, please do not let Branyan in Chicago, much less near the Cubs. He is by far the worst option available to any team looking for 1B.
  5. All we've heard is that the Cubs have no money and are pushing to upgrade Wrigley. I would have liked some movement on the free agent market considering the obvious needs this team has. I'm not saying pushing for bad players, but any news at this point would at least signal the team is looking to contend in 2011.
  6. The man worked wonders on guys like Neagle, Hampton, Horacio Ramirez and others in Atlanta. I've heard him a little bit, but nothing that makes me nervous about hiring him. What happened to him in Baltimore? His perceived coaching ability never panned out with their pitching staff. Was it all because Baltimore was awful? Personally, I feel a large part of his success was due to having Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz. Anyone could look like a genius when 3/5 of your rotation are HOFers.
  7. First of all, none of those guys were unproven when the Cubs acquired them. They all had ML experience with no upside, and all were proven to suck. Hendry just didn't realize that they all sucked because he was enamored with their ability to play multiple positions, sometimes very poorly. Secondly, those guys were all intended to be bench players when they were acquired. Them getting as much playing time as they did was due to injuries and bad managers. Granted, Davis could continue to suck at the plate. He could also get a ton more ABs than he should if the Cubs signed someone else to start ahead of him. But Davis is an entirely different situation. Aaron Miles was acquired to start at 2B the majority of the time. Cesar Izturis was acquired to be the starting SS. Freddie Bynum had less playing time than Davis does already, and Macias was just a little more. It's not like Davis hasn't had significant major league experience. Parts of three seasons and 872 PA. He's not untested. Miles was not signed to be the primary 2B. He was insurance (however wrong-headed) in case Fontenot tanked. And even then, Hendry went out and got Jeff Baker. Miles only played 35 games at second, compared to 70 games for Fontenot and 49 for Baker.
  8. Why wouldn't you want potential high reward players? This teams needs to take some chances to get better. The other option is locking in mediocrity which is never a good idea. Where did I say I don't want potential high-reward players? I said I don't want Nick Johnson because he's an injury-prone player with a history of wrist injuries that could bring our offense down further if he's not on the field.
  9. Why anyone would want to take Nick Johnson boggles my mind. He can't walk onto the field without getting injured. He's definitely the high-risk, high-reward type of player that I don't want on the team.
  10. The closest would be the Schaumburg Flyers stadium, but that only holds a shade over 7,000. There's nothing within 50 miles that could accommodate an MLB team. I also doubt the Cubs players would agree to split home games between parks so far away from each other. Didn't Montreal complain to the union about having to play in Puerto Rico? That's freaking Puerto Rico. Of course they complained. They were from Canada. And of course it still happened. Home games at US Cellular should not mean a damn thing to them. And Miller isn't much of a big deal either. As long as the team puts them up in a suitable hotel in Milwaukee they will be fine with it. Whoa, settle down cowboy. I only mentioned it in the context of using Milwaukee AND the Cell for their home games. Using one or the other wouldn't make a different.

  12. I've resigned myself to the fact that Chicago will never be happy with the Cubs and Wrigley Field. No matter what, the residents who moved in after the park opened will complain about noise, traffic and crowds. The city itself will never be satisfied with the revenue brought in by the park and its surrounding recreation. More and more people have no problem calling Wrigley a dump, yet any attempts to update it are met with opposition. What does this city want? I have no clue. Some people will just never be happy.
  13. This team is making it realllly hard for me to care about them.
  14. It won't happen, but given how the Cubs were willing to use Naples as leverage against Arizona, I'm sure they'd be willing to "explore" their opportunities elsewhere. I'm sure somewhere like Rosemont/Des Plaines/Park Ridge would be willing to tear down some buildings near the convention center to make way for Wrigley North.
  15. Exactly. I doubt he's so naive that he has no plan B. I'm betting there are enough suburbs that would acquiesce to any and all demands from the Ricketts if they decide that playing in Wrigley is no longer safe and/or feasible.
  16. Despite all the negative press, I still believe that the legislature should pass this bill. Ricketts is correct in saying that Wrigley is the number three tourist destination in Illinois and should be treated as such. Just because it's owned by a private entity means nothing. If major corporations are given tons of tax breaks for moving to Illinois, the Cubs should be given consideration. The state practically grabbed its ankles when Navistar got fed up with local government screwing with their expansion plans. And the fact that the state and city are practically insolvent is immaterial. Neither are being deprived of any tax revenue. This whole thing is just a joke. The White Sox get millions to renovate the Cell every couple years from the state. Soldier Field's renovation was paid for directly by the taxpayer. Even the United Center got state support.
  17. But they're not losing on that revenue. The state will issue $300 million in bonds to cover the revenue diversion and any future ticket increase will reimburse the bonds. It's actually a pretty good deal. The state gets its credit rating improved through issuance of the bonds and the Cubs get the necessary funding immediately to start renovations. The Ricketts just aren't doing a very good job at selling this proposition at a time when everyone is hard up for tax revenue.
  18. I have to imagine there are actually a fair number of Cardinals fans downstate... and Mike Madigan is a Sox fan. There's the only assemblyman who matters.
  19. Bolded answers your question Mr. Ricketts. Anyone know where Rahm stands on baseball?
  20. Phil continues to astound with his penchant for awful ideas. The highlights:
  21. Unless Boston is kicking in a sufficient portion of Daisuke's 2012 salary, I want no part of it. Despite what the Cubs see, Fukudome has value in more than a salary dump.
  22. He was cut by the team in August. I doubt he gets a ring... unless Brian Wilson punches him in the face with his.
  23. Those Marquee seats would suck if you're sitting in the back few rows under the canopy.
  24. What is the cast of Match Game 2010?
  25. Jorge Posada, Boog Powell and Dustin Pedroia. Not a bad list.
