  1. Given the financial constraints on the team, I can't imagine Hendry came up with this one, let along followed up on it. He may not be that savvy, but even he knows basic math.
  2. True on the contract. If he hit the free market this off-season, he'd still probably get a Lackey-sized deal.
  3. That is NOT given. The Cubs are in a crappy division; there's no reason they can't compete. While true, I'd still put us 3rd behind the Cards and Reds. I hope we're not done with the offseason at this stage though, maybe we could close the gap a little more. No dispute there. I'm not saying the Cubs would be the favorites, but it gets a bit annoying when people repeatedly say the Cubs are going nowhere in 2011 as if it were indisputable fact. It's far from that. You're right. It's not an indisputable fact. It just seems like a real reach, and given that, I'm okay with them signing a fan favorite for the sake of seeing him play in a Cubs uniform again.
  4. You know what this team needs? More white guys.
  5. Given that we're not going anywhere in 2011, I have no problem with this signing. Let Woody take a farewell tour and call it a career.

  7. You think Z would have a major problem with going to New York and pitching for the Yankees with Rothschild? I seem to remember reading either Sullivan or Rogers this past week and Z was intent on pitching for Mike Quade, and not lifting his no-trade clause. I don't think Z and Piniella were ever on the same page.
  8. I wish him nothing but success. He was one of my favorite Cubs of all time.
  9. The chief thing that bugged me about the funeral was Jesse Jackson being there in the front row. Not only being in the front row, but as the cameras cut over the Santo family, he was in full view lounging in the pew. Why can't he just go away.
  10. Thats what she has sounded like everyday since her strokes. Isn't Feder a Chicago guy? Wouldn't he know that? He's been pushing the "Allison Payne is a drunk" angle for a few years now. Even though there's no proof to back it up and she's admitted to her treatments at the Mayo Clinic as a result of his reporting. He's a good reporter, but when he has an axe to grind, he doesn't let up.
  11. Portland has been brought up many times as a possible destination for a MLB team, but does it have the population to support a team? All they have are the Blazers in terms of professional sports.
  12. A lot of fans were turned off by his homerism, but to me that made him all the more endearing. That's certainly true, which made him even more unique in the broadcasting world.
  13. What sucks most, or is a tribute to his ability, is that we'll never see another analyst like him again. Only those who heard him at any point during his 20 years on the radio can appreciate his contributions.
  14. They're getting a new stadium? I know the Marlins are... The Rays haven't been able to secure public funding for the park as of yet.
  15. +1000 I don't know what else Soto has to do to prove he's not a bottom of the order hitter.
  16. Well would you care to enlighten me to as to how we should evaluate pitchers then, and is it irrelevant or not? I know you meant past WAR being useless for evaluation versus somehow being able to determine what the WAR would be going forward. It's still talking in circles and adding nothing but you showing how caustic you can be without giving a real thought on the matter. Wins and losses baby. The way the world works.
  17. Boo freaking hoo. I can't feel sympathy for anyone who plays for the Yankees because they always seem to be paid more than they are worth. Actually, when was the last time the Yanks signed anyone to a reasonable contract?
  18. "Let me take a look at the replay... yeah, he was tagged." It happened at least twice a game, every game.
  19. I could see this being the "big move" this off season. It combines addressing a supposed need through free agency relating Cubs tradition lost through sandberg's departure and Ronnie's death.
  20. What a great line: "Ron Santo dead at 70. Survived by anyone who loved the Chicago Cubs." For those in the Chicago area this week, visitation will be Thursday starting at 4 p.m. at Holy Name Cathedral. Funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. I'm sure the procession will pass Wrigley.
  21. From a logical perspective, yes, sell all your valuable parts to get value. At the same time, they have a responsibility to put a (sensibly) competitive team on the field. Without pieces like Marmol, Soto, etc. they can't sell that team to a ticket-buying public. The Ricketts saw attendance plummet once the team started tanking. They can't reasonably expect to sell tickets in February by conceding the season in December. So we're going to have this half-assed approach to the off-season, where we miss out on high-profile fixes because we can't/won't pay them and have to settle for reclamation projects and second-tier players. Welcome to 1990s Cubs baseball.
  22. Probably. It could be fun if players like Castro, Cashner, Colvin, B Jax, Vitters, Archer, McNutt and Carpenter continue to develop. That would be nice if I wanted to watch AAA baseball. However I want to watch a team compete for a World Series. Unfortunately the cubs won't reciprocate.
  23. I can only imagine Hendry's next step in proving this organization's inattention or flat out disinterest to contending.
  24. Can anyone explain why Martin was cut? He seemed like he was going to be a mainstay in the Dodgers lineup. His OPS dropped sharply the past two years, but he still seemed a good player.
  25. One of the best players of his generation who became a cult hero in the booth. Listening to next year's games won't be the same. Have fun in heaven where I'm sure the cubs win the world series annually.
