  1. http://www.suntimes.com/news/education/1182774,skul092508.article Apparently, IL Senator James Meeks wants to get about 6000 protestors together to ring Wrigley Field during the NLDS to protest funding disparities between school districts. Forget the fact that the Cubs contribute to alot of programs for the schools he's fighting for funding over, but what does a baseball game have to do with this? "I want to get more attention to the funding of the poor schools in the area...I know...we'll protest one of the largest private donors to those private schools that I'm fighting for!" He's obviously just an ignorant attention-whore, as he's picking the biggest target in town to protest even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the problem. This guy is an idiot. People from that district need to impeach him. Hopefully no one will be stupid enough to follow him. It's such an ignorant idea that even Daley, of all people, is speaking out against the idea in the media. I'd really like to see him back up the 100 years for school reform comment there. That just reinforces that he's an attention whore, and that's too bad, because that's a legit cause he's pushing for.
  2. Because Selig is an incompetent commissioner. I really wish they could get someone like the NFL had with Tagliabue. The NFL makes timely decisions, and it also isn't dominated by the big market teams like MLB usually is. The NFL also holds their refs accountable, while it takes an act of God before MLB will do the same with their umps. MLB's fan base is also dwindling compared to the NBA or NFL over the last 10 years. I like baseball better, but even as a baseball homer, I can't help but recognize that the NFL is a far superior product and a better run league when compared to MLB. I don't see how anyone could view Selig's tenure as anything short of a complete and total disaster. Yet, the owners love him. I don't understand.
  3. Could they end up being the worst 100-win team in MLB history? I think you could make a strong case for it.
  4. Unfortunately, so would the reverse scenario.
  5. TB area voters will vote 50-50. Half will vote they don't care if the Rays are playing anyone in the post season, the other half will vote that they didn't know TB had a baseball team.
  6. Interesting simulation I hadn't heard of before. Basically, this site uses only each teams current season statistical performance, then each team is simulated against every other 100x's - 50 home & 50 away so that all starters in the current rotation pitch 10x's at each location. Their #1 team is the Cubs, with a winning percentage of 62.9%. At first, it was surprising to me that the Angels were 13th in the league at 51.8%. Most of the other rankings were pretty close to where you would expect them to be. Then I looked at the current pythagorean records, and the Angels are by far the luckiest team in baseball at 13 wins more than their expected record, so maybe it's not that far away from what you'd expect. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/powerRankings?type=whatIfSports http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL_2008_standings.shtml
  7. Unless the Mets also lose and Houston wins three in a row. :D Or what if it all works out so both that Astros game AND the Mets game have to be made up? That would really suck.
  8. We can just kick the Brewers arse the next three games, then not have to worry about it one way or another.
  9. If you told me during ST that Cliff Lee was going to be the best pitcher in baseball this year and Choo was going to put up those kind of numbers, yet the Indians would maybe be a .500 team, I wouldn't have believed you.
  10. They're seriously going to throw Gallardo back into the rotation like that? Wow. No pressure kid. Yeah, that doesn't seem like a good idea. Or it could be a shot in the arm. He will have a fresh arm and is a damn fine pitcher. But he'll be Rusty. This is a no-win decision for the Brewers. If they don't make the playoffs and Gallardo doesn't pitch, that decision will be second guessed. If he does pitch but he doesn't pitch well, that will be second guessed. Same with the playoffs. The only way they don't lose on this decision is if he pitches and pitches well, or if he doesn't pitch, but they win it all (not gonna happen).
  11. Sitting A-Pete can burn you badly, but I always want to see guys have one game where they don't show any lingering affects after getting a little hurt like he did. Tough call there, but I'd probably go with LJ.
  12. I'd go with Jones. Hard to pick a rookie going against Baltimore of all teams in his first game getting the majority of the touches. I agree with raw on Bowe over Galloway. I'd want to see him have a good productive game and prove he's over his injury first.
  13. I need to choose a starter for my flex spot and one of my WR slots. My choices for those three slots: Jerricho Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, Brandon Lloyd, Chansi Stucky, and Earnest Graham. I think Edwards is going to get on track, and I'm leaning towards Cotchery for the other, but I might go Graham. What would you do?
  14. Dempster is pitching awesome this year because of the awesome Geo. Hell, even Marquis has been decent in the second half this year. If we don't get Demp back, we need to have Geo go be Rich Hills roommate for the winter so he can get more time to rub his awesomeness off on him too.
  15. But where does Bartlett rank in grinding, grit, and scrappiness? Yeah, I thought so. Now hang your defeatist head in shame. He's no where near as gritty as Theriot.
  16. I don't know who is worse, the TB writers, or the fans...
  17. If the question is "Which Cub is most identifiable as the face of the franchise?" then the answer is Woody. But the question as asked, "Who has NSBB's heart?" the answer to that is pretty undeniable. That is the one and only Geo.
  18. so he's the Geovanny Soto of center field. Clearly it's possible to see a jump in power in one year and for it to be sustainable More often than not, it won't be sustainable. But you're right, it is possible, that's why I said I was lukewarm but not cold on him. I don't think he's a 25 hr a year guy, but I don't think he's a 10 hr a year guy at best either like his minor league numbers suggest. I'd be thrilled if we could get him without overpaying. I think Pitt would want something along the lines of Pie, Cedeno, and Marshall for him, and I don't think I'd do that. Edit: Oh, and he's not the Geovany Soto of centerfield. The only guy that could earn that tag is if Geo himself if he decided he was bored playing catcher.
  19. Except the Ron Santo almost having a heart attack part, that is...
  20. I'm lukewarm at best on Mclouth. His slugging this year is higher than he ever put up in the minors, and his HRs are more than double anything he ever did in the minors, so I have doubts if the power is sustainable. The .280 average / .360 OBP lines probably are, and the defense is good. His power spike this year I think will boost the price (in terms of prospects) above what I think he's worth if he can't replicate his power numbers. If we could get him for Pie plus filler, I'd do that, but I think he'll draw significantly more than that.
  21. Yup, and he won't get any better with Dusty as his coach.
  22. god i'm stupid I went with Jones. I won't claim any better wisdom though. The coin landed on heads.
  23. One side kept it off the field (i.e. coaches, not players), the other chose to target the opposing SP. I think that's weak.
  24. It's looking like Dallas Clark is healthy and is definitely going to start tomorrow, which I wasn't expecting. So, the question is...Dallas Clark or John Carlson at TE? I'm thinking Carlson this week, since we know he's healthy, they're playing St Louis, and all of Seattles WRs are injured. If Clark does OK and doesn't look like he's still favoring that knee, then he goes back to starter next week. Good idea?
  25. We can, but as St Louis showed us in 2006, teams that don't deserve to be in the playoffs can beat anyone out there as well.
