That's what I hope happens. I wouldn't even mind a 2 year deal at 1.5 mil per. That'll close the gap until Castillo is hopefully ready. Blanco is one of the best backup catchers in the game, I'd like to see him stick around for a little longer. Despite being an excellent backup, he's one of those backups that doesn't inspire the manager to take playing time away from the young kids, so, double bonus. There's no reason to lock up Blanco for 2 years. If you want him back for 2010, you can sign him to the same 1/1.5 deal you signed him to for '09. Someone else might offer him 2 mil this year (I wouldn't expect it, but it wouldn't surprise me anyways)...the second year would only be if absolutely necessary. It wouldn't be a big deal either way.

Dempster Files for Free Agency
Jehrico replied to DubCub's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
I suspect nothing on price of the deal? Ryan Dempster the person is one hell of a guy from everything I've seen. I think just about anyone here would love to go out drinking with the guy for a night. However, i'm not sure if I want him pitching on this team again next year with the money he's going to command. He was a big part of the regular-season success this year, but nothing in his career to this point shows that this was anything more than a fluke. Go after Peavy, or hit the FA market. It's freaking LOADED with arms that are far less of a gamble than Dempster. Who knows what to expect in this market. The one thing we have gonig for us is this year's market is loaded in good SP. If this was two years ago, he'd be getting 20 mil. The fact is he's only had one really good season as a starter and there's several options ahead of him. I think his value will be determined by how desperate the teams are that lose out on CC and company. I could see him coming back for 10-11 mil per on the low end, and I could see him going somewhere else for 16-17 mil per on the high end. I really think Demp wants to stay here, and he'll offer a sizable hometown discount depending on how the market develops this year. That would be Gary Matthews Jr. silly. Who also, ironically, had one very solid year as a starter before becoming a FA... -
I'd hit that. That's what he said (minus the 'd).

Why exactly should the LA Dodgers care how Manny did or didn't play in Boston? What would make them want to pee in Manny's Cheerios? Was the lack of motivation in Boston really a money thing? I don't believe that to be true. To me, and I suppose I could be wrong, he went from an organization that seemed more willing to be rid of him and then to an organization who seemed to want him. It's hard to get motivated to go out and play your best everyday when the organization you play for doesn't see the value you bring. And I need to understand how Manny did this to Cleveland, also. In his final season in Cleveland, he posted: .351/.457/.697 For the value he can provide to a team, the teams who can can afford $20m would be stupid to assume that they would automatically get the displaced Boston Manny instead of the inspired LA Manny. Hendry has my blessing to give Manny whatever sum of money he will want to be a Cub in 2009. I agree for the most part...but as far as the Dodgers are concerned (or any other team that would sign him for that matter)...if they offer him a 4 or 5 year deal, you know his behavior in Boston would be in the back of their minds. Manny was GREAT last year, but he wasn't as great as he's been in the past, when the BoSox placed him on irrevocable waivers, and no one took him. It's going to be a factor. That said, I think it'll be the difference in him getting 19 instead of 22 million a year or something like that, and whether or not he'll be able to get a full NTC.

Chad Cordero FA?
Jehrico replied to illiniguy's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
I'd do that with an option for a 3rd year that automatically vests based on appearances. If he's healthy enough to rack up appearances over the next two years, I think he'll be a good bet to be a quality pitcher in the 3rd year. Next year, once he's back, he'll likely struggle, but he'll get good again once he's got the rust knocked off. -

Howry is Type A
Jehrico replied to SAMMYWHO's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Exactly. He might get that from someone else if someone else doesn't have to sacrifice a 1st round draft pick to get him. If we offer him arbitration, he'd be left with no choice but to accept arbitration from us. There's simply no way we're going to get any draft picks out of him, no matter what Hendry does. Best to just cut sling on him now and walk away. -

Yeah...doesn't everybody? -
As far as Furcal goes and Hendry not getting his man, I don't think MacPhail was the one holding that one up. Nor was it any DUI clause or anything. It was maybe the one case where Hendry refused to pay more than a guy was worth. Colletti ultimately offered him far more per year than anyone believed he was worth at the time for only three years instead of 5-6 that everyone else was offering, which enabled him to seek another big FA payday before he got too old. The price simply got to exceed what his real value was, and Hendry graciously bowed out. I have full faith in Hendry "getting his man." Unfortunately, I have little faith in Hendry picking the right guy to be "his man." I would have rather seen him go all out for Vlad or Beltran instead of Soriano the two years before we signed Fonzie.

Undervalued Players
Jehrico replied to Transmogrified Tiger's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
To tag along with the buy low theme of this thread, what about selling high? Theriot is the obvious choice, followed by Fontenot. What about Marmol, could his value be peaking right now? What could we get for him? Not that I want to trade him, but I do think it would be prudent to explore it, as I don't think anyone is untradeable if the return is worth it. -
Avery has looked like a legitimate fantasy receiver over the last few weeks. He's been getting picked up in alot of fantasy leagues.

Then you'd think he'd have a history of being half-way right every once in awhile? The results from the last decade certainly don't back that up like they do with some of the other Chicago beat reporters. Some reporters get a bad wrap for breaking one or two stories before they go through, then look bad when they collapse...see the other Bruce. Sullivan gets a bad wrap because he consistently writes stuff that ends up proving to be garbage in the end. -
I agree with RAW. I wouldn't give up on Holt just yet. A problem with that is, I don't want to have 3 Rams WRs on my roster. I also have Berrian and Curtis who I just picked up. I suppose Curtis could be an option but I'm thinking he has more upside in that offense if he can get up to speed. Basically, you can come back from injury, you cannot come back from old. This is wise. Fantasy teams are a little like playing the stock market...putting all of your eggs in one basket is a lot riskier than diversifying. I don't like starting too many guys from the same team, because if that team lays an egg that week, it kills my fantasy team.I have one fantasy team where I have Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, and Marvin Harrison on the same team. In past years that combination was gold. This year, however, I've learned not to start them all at the same time. Maybe soon I'll learn not to start any of them.I've got Dallas Clark, the guy I played last week has Wayne, Harrison, and Addai.

I'm going to say SS and RF. I would say 1B as well, but I think DLee is going to have a bit of a resurgence after his disappointing year last year. Not a 2005 type of resurgence, but maybe 27-32 HRs, 40-45 2Bs, .300BA, .400 OBP... -

Jake Peavy: Available.
Jehrico replied to Mephistopheles's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
No they Don't have to trade him. No need for the size 200 font. But there have been rumors that the owners may decide to cut payroll to somewhere around 30 some million I believe because of the divorce, which would make it extremely difficult to fit 24 other guys under that limit in addition to Peavy. Just because you put it in 200 point font doesn't mean this won't come into play this winter. Doesn't mean it will either. My best guess is someone will pony up a worthwhile offer and the deal will be made. Maybe the Brewers if they don't bring Sabathia back. Well evidently it worked because people immediately stopped talking about how we can get him for pennies on the dollar and that there was an ultimatum to trade him. We can't and there isnt. Buster pegged it at $50M and all other reports are saying $20M off 2008, which would be just over $50M, either way that still allows them to field a team with Peavy. Towers denied reports of a $40M payroll during the Giles trade debacle. Even if it was $30M off, they could still field a team with Peavy and get rid of Giles or Greene. I've shown you that they absolutely can fit Peavy and 24 other guys in $50M, you just chose to ignore it. I guess I should have put it in 200 point font. Obviously the Padres are under a payroll contraint. That point is undeniable, but it is 100% absolutely false for people to think that it is impossible or even difficult for the Padres to field a 25 man roster with Peavy and stay within those payroll constraints. First, people didn't stop talking about trading for Peavy because of your post. This threads been going for awhile now, is getting up there in pages, and is beginning to suffer from BRTII syndrome. Second, I didn't choose to ignore anything. It's not in any teams best interest to tie up a third of their payroll in one player. No one ever said it was impossible for them to keep Peavy and 24 other guys on the books. What you're obviously missing is that everyone thought everyone else understood that the team wouldn't want that high of a percentage of their payroll on one guy, and they would find it difficult justifying keeping someone in his salary class when they're cutting back everywhere else. You keep talking in extremes, but you're the only one. No one is saying they're going to do or not do anything for sure other than yourself. The only thing anyone else is saying is that they should be compelled (not absolutely, but to a degree) to move him for a variety of reasons. From a business perspective, they're taking a huge gamble if they keep Peavy. He had some arm problems this year, he has a long term contract, and he is taking up a huge percentage of their projected payroll. If he goes down this year with TJS, it would be a total utter disaster that would set their franchise back significantly, kind of like Albert Belle with the Orioles from 2001-2003. If he were on the DL for an extended period, they'd have a payroll of somewhere in the low to mid $30 millions with the figures you reported for the other 24 guys and his replacement. As far as anyone saying we can get him for peanuts, I agree with you on that one, they won't give him away for nothing. But if they can get maybe 70% (maybe more, maybe less) of what they would under more normal circumstances, I think they'd have to think real hard before turning it down. -

Tough one...I'd go Jamal Lewis for your RB, hard to say on the Flex. Kirkpatrick has been horrible, so I'd stay away from 85. If you think you're in a pretty good matchup in a head to head league, I'd go conservative on the flex and go with James or McFadden. If you're projected to lose by a bit, I'd use Edwards in the WR slot and hope for a big game despite the matchup.
-
I'd go with Schaub and Edwards. Whatever you do, I wouldn't do both Eli and Plax at the same time, as defenses are stacking harder on their passing game compared to the run, and the Giants are running alot more as a result. I wouldn't gamble two spots on your roster on the Giants having a good passing game. Maybe one, but not both.

Jake Peavy: Available.
Jehrico replied to Mephistopheles's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
15, 16, 17, 22. Those are the reasons why the Padres want to trade Peavy now. Those are Peavy's yearly salaries from 2010-2013. Whats significant about those numbers isn't so much the fact that they will be a big bump in pay by the team after 2009. Whats significant is that they will be fairly close to Peavy's ACTUAL value. Once Peavy reaches the part of his contract that he signed the extention last winter he isn't going to be such a great deal anymore. He'll be a $20M pitcher making $17.5M. Now really is the right time where hes reached the inflection of his best production AND best value. The demand from the market SHOULD be at its highest, however because there are seemingly few trading partners it is not. If that indeed is the case then I'm guessing we'll see them hold onto Peavy and trade him at the deadline. Additionally, you have to look at the Padres as a whole. They have many holes and a poor farm system (in addition to the payroll issues). One Jake Peavy isn't going to propel this team into the playoffs. They need multiple young, good, cheap players. It would be foolish for a team to not entertain offers on their best player if it will help them have a better team overall. DePodesta has said that many times on his blog. Regardless as to whether or not payroll slashing is going on in SD, now is the right time to trade Peavy. I think you're hitting it on the nose. Divorces can get acrimonious and messy. One of two things will happen...the Padres will do the smart thing and keep him, as they're unlikely to get fair value with the limited market they have to work with, or, if they're desperate enough because of the divorce, they'll take what the can to save the money. If we get them, it's going to be because their owners made the bad choice out of necessity because of the divorce, not because we overwhelmed them with our prospects. That said, this thread is going to be the BRTII thread, because no one is going to offer the Padres fair value right now. They're not going to lose anything by waiting as long as possible, and they won't owe him any more money until the first paycheck for next season is due. This is going to drag on until at least right before spring training, if not later. It's anyone's guess as to whether this divorce will have any impact on them making a bad decision. It's highly unlikely, IMO, but not impossible. -
Orton or Rogers at QB? I need one 1 RB, and 1 Flex out of: Jerricho Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, Ernest Graham, and Willie Parker. I'm leaning towards Orton (will probably struggle to make up my mind all week with this one), Cotchery, and Graham for this week.

*ding* Peavy's true value might be high but his current trade value is probably low as the Braves are not in it supposedly and the AL is completely out. What the Padres will get out of him depends largely on how determined the owners are to shed his payroll with their pending divorce, and if the other GMs in the league know it. -

Jehrico replied to Mephistopheles's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Gerut and Hairston have not been 'prospects' of any kind in quite some time. Both are full-time MLB players and have been for a few years. Comparing them to the Cubs names being floated - besides probably Cedeno, who has been around a couple years now - is not really an accurate comparison. I don't know where you get your information, but Gerut hasn't played anything close to full time since 4 years ago, and Hairston has never been a full time player career. He has yet to break 350 ABs in a season. They are both absolutely comparable to Cedeno and Johnson in terms of value. Not that this argument has anything to do with any teams chances of landing Peavey. I meant full time as in they're always with the big club. that means little, especially when that big club has the crap on it's roster that SD has.
