  1. really? where is that coming from? At least the second part of that goes against what pretty much every source has agreed on so far... I am not saying that another acceptable club will step in and offer more, but right now a # 1 starting pitcher is on the market and, in Tower's mind, teams are offering spare parts. The pads want more than that and are chatting with other clubs. Will they get it? Time will tell. If the Pads were happy with what was being offered, the deal would be done. But what about all the reports that Peavy had a very limited number of clubs that he would wave his NTC for?????? It is limited, but not to 2 teams. Towers also wouldn't hesitate to try to convince him to expand that list if an attractive team made a better offer. It's really three teams, but one of them is in the division, and Towers really doesn't want to improve one of his divisional rivals. So, until Peavy comes out and says "I will accept a trade to the Yankees or someone else," the pool is two unless Towers determines that trading him to the Dodgers is worth it. At this point, Towers is talking to a few other teams. He is in a tough spot with Peavy holding the best cards. Time will tell. He can talk to anyone he wants, but it won't do any good if Peavy doesn't want to go there. That doesn't mean they're in the mix.

They're offering spare parts because they know Towers has to offload him, and they know that they don't have to offer a better package than the rest of the league. There's only a couple of teams they can work with. It's kind of like supply and demand. Peavy's NTC allows him to limit the demand to as few teams as he wants. Less demand = lower price unless you get lucky and get the two capable of offering the most going against each other, but that's not the case here.
  4. Due to the NTC, there aren't really any other clubs they can talk to, unless those talks are in the context of helping Chicago or Atlanta work a 3 or 4 team deal.
  5. I'd imagine he splits the difference pretty well. The numbers last year looked kinda flukey, but he did lose a tick off his fastball and his slider isn't good enough to cover that up. FLUKEY?!? Every other ball he threw ended up on waveland. It wasn't that many...it was more like one out of three. Another third go out onto Sheffield. The last third only make it to the bleachers or the basket. Or the batter's eye.
  6. There's only one person who can say with certainty that Peavy is Chicago-bound, and that is Kevin Towers. If you hear it first from Peavy, Hendry, or anyone else personally, they can make some highly-qualified assumptions based on their role in the process, but those are still assumptions. The only thing anyone else can tell anyone is Peavy can tell anyone where he is NOT going to go due to his NTC. Likewise, with all of the media reports that he's going to Atlanta, those reports are coming from sources who are likely not Kevin Towers or affiliated directly with him, so I take those with a grain of salt as well. On a side note, if he's going to Atlanta, then it has to happen today, right? If I'm not mistaken, COB today is Atlanta's deadline before they move on to the FA market?
  7. I don't know...it's not like he was just struggling with location or something minor like that. He had no offspeed stuff, and his fastball had absolutely no movement. Not to mention no speed either. I never heard any reports of their being anything physically wrong with him that an offseason would help cure, nor do I think his '08 season was affected by sagging confidence. I'm curious where he'll regain 5+ mph on his fastball or whose going to reteach him how to throw an effective offspeed pitch. I'm doubtful he'll be able to show much more in '09 than he did in '08. Maybe slight improvement at best, esp if he signs with a team whose manager will only use him as a Roogy next year.
  8. that was my thought, too, especially since the wrigley renovations would seem to be far more expensive and time-consuming. Really? More expensive than dealing with permanent left field and right field bleachers, and not just one level, mind you. I doubt they'd have to do much of anything to the structure itself. right, it's not like they'd be moving fences back, needing to do something about seats. If they move fences in , say, 10-15 feet (I have no real idea), what really needs to be done other than moving the walls. If you give an MLB owner another 10-15 feet of space where you can put extra seating, they're probably going to take advantage of that. I think they would probably alter the lower bleachers so they could add a few more rows, but the extra ticket sales would probably pay for that over time. Your only going to have extra ticket sales if you are selling out games and then increase your ticket sales. I don't think they are or will be the next couple of years. You're obviously underestimating the drawing power of the gritty Ryan Theriot.
  9. If Howry gets us two picks, I'll stop using his name instead of....you know...
  10. Okay, show of hands...who has refreshed this thread more than 10 times today? 100 times?
  11. I'm 8-2, first place in the league. I would be 9-1 if I hadn't started Aaron Rogers, Braylon Edwards, and Lee Evans all last week. Being in first kind of sucks though...it doesn't help you win the playoffs, you lose all of the late season waiver claims if anyone else wants the same guys, and no one will do any trades with you. I fleeced a couple of other guys (who are 2nd and 3rd in our league right now) earlier in the season. So now, even if I propose a trade where the other guy is getting more value than me, he either thinks that I must know something he doesn't and he won't trade with me, or he'll spite himself just to prevent me from getting better.
  12. Yeah, but will that $800 offset not getting the bonus at work when you don't get any work done? ;)
  13. I traded Forte for Braylon Edwards early in the season. That was bad, bad, bad. Luckily, I've made some good ones to counterbalance it. Larry Fitz and Julius Jones for Anquan Boldin and Lee Evans in one just as Boldin was coming back from his injury is looking like an absolute steal right now. After wk 1, I traded the Cowboys defense and Joe Flacco for the Bucs D and Jason Campbell (who I subsequently traded for Willie Parker). The guy I traded Flacco to released him, and the Cowboys D has sucked. He put a claim in on Flacco the other week but got beat to it. He's been trying to get me to trade him the Bucs d back for three weeks now. I've been trying to trade for Thomas Jones since just before his bye week, but the other guy wouldn't move him for anything then, and he certainly isn't going to now.
  14. Steve Stone implied it, so pretty much every White Sox fan believes it. There's no reasoning with them, just let it die. Oh, don't worry. I'm done arguing with him. I just find it absurd and sad in the first place. You should have countered with Ozzie giving McDowell roids back in the day, then gracefully bowed out while the board exploded.
  15. He doesn't have negative value because of the position he plays. But, he's coming off a horrible season where he injured himself off the field, makes 6.5m for 2009 and then he's a free agent. Teams just aren't going to offer up a whole lot for him, but there will be plenty of teams out there willing to throw a small offer out there to see if it sticks, simply because they need a SS. On the flip side, we're interested in him because his 3 year splits are still decent for his position, especially considering he plays in PETCO, despite his one horrible season. There's enough history to suggest this year was an aberration, so it shouldn't totally kill all of his value. That's why many people on here will be thrilled if we get him. If we're drooling over him, then other clubs surely are willing to give more than a token offer, I would think. Regardless, I want to buy low on this one...
  16. I thought Pierre was busy ripping off the Dodgers?
  17. We can do this with every source. How many major outlets weren't reporting that we basically had no shot at Harden and didn't have the players the A's would want? Granted, I guess one would be inclined to cut someone like Rosenthal or Olney a bit more slack, but I don't necessarily see why (they're wrong a ton). Rosenthal yes, Olney no.
  18. Here's a good question that hasn't really been asked (or I've missed it...)...Does Greene really have negative value? Sure his value is down, but I don't think it's negative, not based on one bad season in Petco. I don't think we simply get Peavy for less just because we take him off of their hands. At most, the skids might be getting greased for a separate deal for Greene, or the offerings in the original deal expand to account for him.
  19. I forgot about DeRo at SS. He's as good at the position as Theriot was, at least.
  20. Don't forget CF. Are there any LH CF options out there besides the one we already have in house?
  21. Better hope the Dempster negotiations turn south quickly then.
  22. I have no idea the source. If that's true, then it also means one of three things: a) they think Ronny is ready to finally be a starter (unlikely, if Lou is in the equation) b) they think Fontenot can handle SS everyday (possibly, his defense is only slightly worse than Theriots at the position, and they thought Theriot was passable), or c) They're going to get another SS. Could it be Greene or Furcal? If it's Furcal, then I have a hard time seeing them resign Dempster. Considering they already upped their offer and have expressed they really want to keep him, I think it means Furcal is not in the plans, which is surprising considering how they want a real leadoff hitter and Hendry has shown a strong desire for him in the past. It also means they're finally selling high on someone (Theriot). When is the last time they did that? I can't ever recall... Also, if it's true (and I'm extremely skeptical), I would be extremely happy with this deal, especially if it's for both Peavy AND Greene.
  23. So you don't want to trade Vitters because then you lose the trade value of Vitters...how many bigger fish exist than Jake Peavy? Sorry, that's just a nonsense argument. He was just saying there's a future opportunity cost to consider when getting rid of our last prospect of worth, not that he wouldn't trade him for Peavy because of that cost.
  24. See Chris Dial's Offense Plus Defense for the AL here: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p9BODtOllD4u0JrhtbUmILA&gid=1 Ibanez was terrible defensively, almost completely negating his bat. As for Dunn, he wasn't that bad defensively before the trade, but after he went to Arizona, his bad defense did negate his bat. That's because in Cincy the park is such a bandbox that many balls leave the park, leaving him few opportunities to not field a ball. I still want him in my lineup. I'll take the hit in LF for his bat.
  25. Rick Wilkins at his best wasn't even close to being half as sexy as Geo.
