  1. Gerut and Hairston have not been 'prospects' of any kind in quite some time. Both are full-time MLB players and have been for a few years. Comparing them to the Cubs names being floated - besides probably Cedeno, who has been around a couple years now - is not really an accurate comparison. I don't know where you get your information, but Gerut hasn't played anything close to full time since 4 years ago, and Hairston has never been a full time player career. He has yet to break 350 ABs in a season. They are both absolutely comparable to Cedeno and Johnson in terms of value. Not that this argument has anything to do with any teams chances of landing Peavey.
  2. I agree...I only floated the Soto-Lee trade idea out as a conversation piece to assess what value a package of Peavy and Gonzalez really has. I don't think we could get the Padres to agree to a package without adding in something we should never do.
  3. That's not a fair comparison. I don't think anyone is suggesting offering Reed Johnson and Ronny Cedeno for Peavy, which would be the Cubs closest equivalent of Gerut and Hairston. What alot of people are talking about offering is comparable to about 5 Geruts or Hairstons back when they were prospects before they ever played their first game.
  4. Would you do Soto and Lee for Peavy and Gonzalez?
  5. Peavy, Zambrano, Harden, Lilly, Me would be the best rotation ever. The Cubs have the positions the Padres need to fill. But I question if the talent the Cubs likely have available is good enough. They are looking for a CF, Middle IF, Catcher, and pitching (starting or relief). I would trade Pie, Cedeno, Castillo, Marshall, and Ceda for Peavy (and another player/prospect). But none of those players project to be stars. You'd think for a star like Peavy, SD would at least want a star quality prospect, which the Cubs don't have. Which brings us to the logical conclusion that the Padres won't trade Peavy in the offseason, because they don't have to. Under any other circumstances, it would appear Peavy is untradable. However, SD is in a peculiar situation...if they absolutely must shred payroll because of the ownerships divorce, and he'll only go to a few teams, and the others have taken themselves in the pool, we could get lucky (EXTREMELY lucky). However, I think the Braves, if they're willing to take on his salary, could probably better any deal that we could put forth without giving up one of their premier prospects that they've said they wouldn't part with. We do have a chance at pulling this off, but our chances aren't much better than that of winning the lotto. It depends heavily on how badly the owners want to shed payroll in light of this divorce, and if either has any plans of hanging onto the franchise after the divorce is concluded.
  6. Does he think hes writing an article for a video game audience? Seriously, that might be the most [expletive] trade proposal that has been published...thats quite an accomplishment. I posted this "rumor" under the "Derrek Lee being traded" thread earlier this morning. That thread had discussion about how idiotic Rogers (and Sullivan) are with their "rumors", so I thought it was the appropriate place for this discussion. Gonzalez - 26 yrs old .279/.361/.510 with 36 HRs and 119 RBI making $875,000. Lee- 33 yrs old .291/.361/.462 with 20 HRs and 90 RBI making $13,250,000. The Cubs would have to add something (Pie?) to Lee just to get Gonzalez. Imagine what they would have to add to the package to get Gonzalez AND Peavy. Rogers is an idiot. Considering that they're looking to deal Peavy to cut costs, if we wanted to swap Lee for Gonzalez, we'd probably have to pick up the remainder of his salary just to begin the conversation. I'm doubtful that MLB would even allow the trade to happen at that point.
  7. What did he have, 5 or 6 no hitters?
  8. Just worried that we'd be paying so much extra for that speed? 9 SB against those "arms" the Padres catchers had this year... jeebus. He was 19-2 against everyone else, which shouldn't be ignored. At the same time, I don't think anyone will confuse Holliday's smart baserunning with speed. Wait...Bowden and Colletti still have jobs as GMs, so I take that back.
  9. Counter with Slaton instead...Ahman Greene will probably be cutting into Slatons carries going forward.
  10. I'd go with Slaton and S-Jax(if he starts). Turner has an awful matchup. I also like Andre and Roddy. I agree...these are the right picks.
  11. If Boldin is back, defenses won't be able to stack up on Fitzgerald as much as they have have been, and that should make Warner a more attractive option. I don't think the WRs make a difference. Warner threw for 450 w/o Boldin. Jerame Urban had a 100 yard game. Breaston hasn't missed a beat from Boldin. The thing that will stop Warner is a pass rush and a good defensive backfield. They've got good depth, but I think it's hard to make a case that their passing attack isn't stronger with Boldin than without.
  12. 2 words... colorado springs i know he hit better on the road this year, but still his #s need to be taken in context. 2007 mle was 265/330/421/751 2008 mle was 254/365/391/758 Lets trade Lee and replace him with Koshansky! Screw Roberts, lets go after Nix! Both of those guys out OPSed Smith this year. That said, if we are really cash strapped, he wouldnt be a bad guy for the meaty part of a platoon in RF, he did have some pretty big splits. Of course we could always just use Hoff. Quick dump on Colorado Springs...the elevation on the N side of Colorado Springs ranges from 6800-7200 feet (significantly higher than Denver, which is around a mile high, or 5280 ft), and I don't think they keep their balls in a humidor there (could be wrong, I'm not 100% sure). If you believed that Coors/Mile High added to guys numbers before they instituted the humidor, that affect is increased significantly in Colorado Springs. Take CS home numbers with a big helping of salt.
  13. Are you saying his numbers are as good as they are because he had a bad team in his division? You could say the same thing about DeRo, Theriot, Geo, Aramis, et al, playing the Reds and Pirates so many times. Or are you simply saying that you don't want him because he only had 19 SBs against teams not named the Padres?
  14. Yeah, but he's "fast" (28 SB, 2 CS), so wouldn't that make him "toolsy," and more desirable?
  15. Braves state they won't give up any top prospects, even for Peavy... http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/11056557

  17. Haren was traded after a breakout season. Peavy has been outstanding for several years now and is a perennial Cy Young candidate, not to mention he won it in '07. What the A's got for Haren isn't a good comparison to what the Padres should expect for Peavy. If you look at Haren and Peavy's PECOTAs before this year, Haren's MORP for 2008-2010 totals to a little over $45M. If you look at Peavy's MORP 2009-2013 is roughly $82M. Now PECOTA is just one projection system and MORP is far from perfect, but I'm just using it as an example of how the two players were projected BEFORE this season. So, as of the trade Haren was projected to be worth $45M and had a $16M contract over the next three years. Peavy (as of last years PECOTAs is projected to be worth $82M and has a $78M contract over the next 5 years. Doesn't matter. If healthy, Peavy is a guaranteed ace. The big market, playoff caliber teams are going to go that extra mile for the definitive #1. Haren, while very good, and a better deal for the $, simply isn't that guy. The market for those guys is different. If the haul is similar, it will be because of health concerns after this past year that Peavy just had.
  18. damnit, i have rodgers and orton on a bye this week so i have to start o'sullivan I have Rodgers and Orton too. I noticed they had a bye on the same week a couple of weeks ago, and picked up Garcia off of the waiver wire just for this week. Hopefully he repeats what he did last week.

  20. Haha. I was thinking that exact thing late last evening and after my last post in this thread. The Cubs would be doing themselves a favor to get into the Peavy talks just to rope idiots like me right back in. Not that I actually need to be roped back in, but I will admit that I have needed to take a break from this club for the last few weeks. Peavy discussion definitely gets my attention, however. It gets my attention too. I'm thinking about starting a pool on how long until this is officially known as the sequel to the BRT.
  21. I need to fill three spots, two WRs, and one flex, out of Willie Parker, Ernest Graham, Anquan Boldin, Lee Evans, Braylon Edwards, and Jerricho Cotchery. I'm leaning towards Graham, Evans, and Edwards until Parker and Boldin have a good week to show they're back from injuries.
  22. I had Campbell, Gore, Cotchery, and Edwards all starting this last week for me, which ended up contributing to my worst performance of the year. Thank goodness I also had Portis, and I was playing one of the weaker teams in the league, otherwise I would have been in for an upset. I'm hoping Willie Parker can get healthy and return to form, then I'll have Gore, Portis, and Parker for my RBs on any given week, which would easily be the best RB alignment in my league, which I need because I've got some gambles at WR with Boldin and Edwards going into the playoffs.
  23. He was joking, playing off my last post in this thread. The post fit his mo...and I ignore badnews, and missed all of the background, so.....
  24. I think the air must be getting thin up there at the top of your soapbox you like to preach from. Santana has a better WHIPs and ERAs over his career and over the last three years, despite most of that being in the AL where they have the DH, while Peavy has benefitted from pitching in Petco, where even Maddux was able to put up an ERA under 4 this year. Santana's ERA +s are better across the board, whether you're talking career or 3 year average. It was only 3 years ago Peavy managed an ERA+ of 99 and an ERA over four (not an injury shortened season, he logged over 200 IP). Santana's one "bad" season since becoming a full-time pitcher resulted in a 3.33 ERA and an ERA+ of 130 in 2007. They have comparable BABIPs recently, which helps reduce the "luck" factor. Considering you pride yourself in being a statistical geek, pls show us what stats prove that Peavy is such a lopsided choice as the better pitcher between the two that justifies calling everyone else "mouth breathers?" That comment was uncalled for, especially in this discussion. Sometimes your attitude on this message board rivals what I'd expect from someone in real life going through a 'roid rage.
  25. I just picked up Parker for next to nothing. Hope he's healthy for the last 6 games.
