  1. Kershaw also returned to pitch last season. He is also potentially the best pitcher in the national league and Garza is potentially a good starting pitcher. Not exactly the same. He has 4 straight years of starting 30 or more games. 3 straight years of 200 innings. His highest era was 2.91 over that span. For all his terrible injury problems last year, he had his most starts, and his 2nd lowest era. I am not that smart but I'd guess they are thinking he'll start 30 games, throw 200 innings and have a sub 3 era.
  2. Kershaw also pitched 4 games post re-had last fall and had a 0.64 era Beckett for all his injuries has 1 year that he started 21 games, and the rest are right around 28-30. Last year for all his troubles he started 28, he also had a sub 3 era in LA. Harang has been even more durable. He also kicked in a 3.61 era over 31 starts last year and is their number 5 pitcher. Ryu is a question mark, but he is also a big money foreign pitcher, not quite as heralded as Darvish but they did shell out 60 mil to get him. The dodgers trot out Kershaw, and Greinke..either is a good bet to win a Cy Young, Beckett as a 3,Ryu as a 4, and Harang as the 5. They have Billingsley waiting (and supposedly healthy) if someone is hurt, or doesn't work out. Seriously compare their number 6 pitcher (Billingsley) with our supposed number 1's Garza or Samardzija. Harang and Billingsley could easily be our ace. I wish we had these types of questions for our staff. The Dodgers biggest question might be who is going to win the Cy Young. By the way Capuano and Lilly are listed as 7th and 8th on their starting staff. Both have better career Era's than Jackson who is our big pick up...
  3. Yes, middle of the road teams have questions in the rotation. I am pretty sure that teams like Cincy, LA, San Fran, Philly, Washington, Atlanta and St Louis feel they know what their starters are going to do barring injuries. Washington was number 1 in starting pitching. They had a starting staff ERA of 3.33, we don't have a pitcher on the staff that is close to a 3.33 ERA, let alone all 5. Atlanta has a question at the back of their rotation, bringing along Tehren, who is more highly thought of than Samardzija, AND that is only to wait until Beachy is back. You simply can not in good conscience compare Wood,Villanueva,Baker, and Feldman in the same category as Strasberg,Detweiler,Zimmerman or Medlin, Minor and Beachy..or Tehren
  4. Not sure I'd call our rotation solid and stable. Maybe potentially solid but we are banking on a lot of unknowns. Hoping that Samardzija continues his growth but he's been a starter for 1 season We have 2 of our better guys coming off injuries, and Garza is hurt again, while Baker looks to not be ready for opening day We are hoping that Feldman becomes Maholm and isn't the guy with a 5plus era We are hoping that villaneuva or wood can become a solid starter. and we hope Jackson lives up to his potential not his 4.40 career era (at least not if he is our 1 or 2) We have some material to work with, so I hope it pans out but there are still a lot of questions to be answered.
  5. 4 plus pages on the cubs "possible" 25th man. We have guys slotted to start that are bad, why worry about if the last guy on the roster is bad?
  6. you can play scottsdale for 130 bucks, it's 300 if you want prime tee times before noon. Right now that's pretty nice, as the afternoon temps are in 70's. I am guessing that in a few months you could play for under 100 come afternoon because of the heat.
  7. 6 months ago you could have said the same thing about c.williams.
  8. short game is filthy, saved him most of the 4th round. could have been 3 over, instead of 3 under for those 7. This is what he was said to be working on during the winter/off season. He looked good even in dubai..he just drove terribly. Also he has won here 6 times(and once more in a us open) but he has not played well here since 2008, so playing well may come from some comfort but he is definitely playing very, very well. Yesterday was awesome! golf coverage from 9am til 7pm, then re-caps!
  9. Don't feel sorry for him, that's not the point. No one should pay over half of what they earn to the government..no matter what that amount is. I am pretty sure we all had the chance to grab some clubs and have that sweet life...but of course we didn't. It's not his fault he has a skill that pays well. What you should look at is that the tax increase will hurt (actually even more so) all of us in the long run. Phil brings up a great point...he has to make changes. As will every wealthy person. In the end I will bet that our revenue from taxes will actually drop and I guarantee that california's will. Rich people won't keep their money here, and won't live in cali. Tiger said he moved in 1996 because of the taxes. He moved to florida for golf and no income taxes. I wonder what 10% of Tiger's salary would have brought to california over the last 16 years?
  10. He's a 22 year old kid who fell for something stupid and lied to not look stupid. I am sure everyone did something dumb in college, we just didn't have a 24 hour publicity on us. Give him a break. And for everyone saying/thinking he made this up to help win the Heisman. GET REAL. He plays at ND, his grandmother really did die. He was the best/most recognized player on a great defense that helped the most publicized team to an undefeated season. He needed no extra hype. He would have had to plan this, then know that his defense would be great, and his team would go undefeated before even playing a game this year. Ray Lewis is everywhere, and he is a convicted felon, who covered up a murder so his boys could get off. AND teo had a facebook girlfriend....something seems off there.
  11. This is why I don't go to the Cubs Convention every year. You are surrounded by a majority people who do things like this and they also think we should still have Theriot/Fontenot as our SS/2B combo with Barney at 3B and Campana and Fuld manning the OF. umm, have you seen our current alignment?....just wondering
  12. The most hilarious thing about the press conference was when Emery stated his draft philosophy was to draft the best player available regardless of position or system. So in looking at 2012, he MAY have done that once out of the first 4 picks? Someone please tell me how Mcclellinor(or rodriguez, or Hardin) fits with that statement?
  13. Tiger I agree and understand but i still don't cringe at him being a 5th OF. We have some bad players on our 40 man that fit that same description. I am in now way pining for Lahair nor do i think we will miss him but he is as good as many on the 40 man, and 25 man roster. Of course I will think of him when we have to pinch hit campana, valbuena or even travis wood for a pitcher because our bench is so lacking in major league hitters.
  14. Yes, I brought up Stewart. My first point was- Why is it so improbable that Lahair could hit 20, (as zips predicted) When so many have belief that Stewart will turn it around this year. Which when I looked back at the 3rd base thread, and the signing of Stewart thread and most were fine with it, and even thought he could bounce back because his wrist was the problem. SO my 2nd point was why is everyone fine with him, but so against Lahair. Yes, we signed stewart for a need, I acknowledge that. I just don't get the hate from so many posters that then turn around and fully support some other gamble signings. There was actually less "hate" on signing willis, as there was toward even the mention of Lahair. To me that seems odd.
  15. Lohse is a tough sign. I am sure he and Boras know this is really his last chance at big money and a longer term BUT his stats all point to a pretty quick fall off. With age and the type of pitcher he is, he simply may not see anyone throw big dollars or long terms at him. At least not big dollars and long terms. He may be waiting for a long, long time. Of course usually there is one dumb team that will ante up an insane amount sooner or later. if we could swing those deals for a year that would be a nice move, with a chance at becoming a great move. I could see Soriano signing for a year, but it would probably have to be Lohse's only option to sign a one year. That could really blow up on him if he fades like many expect. Of course if he grabbed 15-18 mil for that year, it would be a nice cushion...
  16. What would we need to give to possibly swing this?
  17. I think it's odd how little thought you put into the notion that the Cubs are desperate for 3B help and that's the only reason they have Stewart around and they are not desperate for 1B so there's literally zero justifiable reason to even consider bringing LaHair back. Pretty sure I said I understand why the signed Stewart but for the record why does having a need at 3b cause the hate for Lahair? Or for that matter make it any more or less likely that either would hit 20 hrs?
  18. I was pretty clear that I, in no way, think we should have signed Lahair. I just think the hate and pure disdain for even considering keeping him is odd considering some of the other "reclamation" projects we have signed and re-signed.
  19. A) Not everybody is ok giving Stewart another chance. Not even close to everybody, and it doesn't even seem like everybody. B) Stewart plays a competent 3B while LaHair is an oaf. a) Can't remember to many complaints that we resigned him. b) a plus for stewart, his health would be minus...you can look at it anyway you want. There are reasons they signed him, but defense or not he is just as likely to be a "turd" as Lahair. I just don't get the hate for Lahair. as for making things up, I think you are mistaking me for posters who disregard a stat, an expert or stat service (like zips) because it doesn't fit their arguments
  20. Not at all. The guy has been a non-entity on the coaching hunt for a while. wasn't his offense just throwing jump balls to moss and carter? pretty sure they weren't with him when he won a Superbowl in Baltimore...
  21. I must be missing something. Those projections show Stewart at .210 and 11 homers. just bringing up old statements that were equally irrational. And for ol' Nuts, this is actually another example of what my original statement was about. For the record I never said DeJesus was taking time from Barney. I simply said it seemed like anyone the new front office brought in as a project or gamble got very chance to succeed, while players from the old regime were looking to be replaced. Barney was my example, as it seemed they picked up every middle infielder off the scrap heap to replace him. He's not Ryne Sandberg but I just said why try to replace a decent, cheap and very good defensive player, that can at least play at the major league level, when you have so many other holes to fill. Especially when it looks like you have no one in your system to step in at those spots anytime soon. At this point we still still need another outfielder and a 3rd basemen. Please understand, I don't think we need Lahair on the team. He is not a difference maker. My only point was it's no more likely that Lahair could hit 20, as it is that Stewart would. For whatever reason everyone seems to be ok giving Stewart another chance but just can't stand the idea of Lahair.
  22. He hasn't done anything meaningful in the last 3 years most of our team falls into that catagory....
  23. Sorry, I took Kyle's saying "that's the joke" as saying it's a joke that everyone else had so much on the table and we were to give 2 prospects, not that he was talking about his statement of not wanting to give up both.
  24. Yeah, but we probably don't want to give up Baez *and* Vizcaino. One or the other, sure. see above ...
