    While I would prefer much more contact, I have less of a problem when it's be paired with walks like it has been in this series.

    Man Darvish is so good. I've been trying to figure out, with the obvious exception of Arrieta, when's the last time we've had a pitcher on a run as good as what Darvish has done since last May? Peak Mark Prior?

    4840 as of this AM. I imagine there will be a good bit of turnover this winter, but that's probably far enough out to still be more like 2022

    Cubs bullpen has a 3.32 ERA (6th) and 3.17 FIP (4th) over the last two weeks. I certainly don't think it's a good pen, but I think now that Ross has had some time to figure guys out down there it's gotten to adequate. We really need Kimbrel's gains to be real. Even if he's no longer historically great, if he's merely good that helps a ton. Tepera looks GOOD, and while there's certainly some luck involved Jeffress is starting to look pretty good too. Sadler has also been great since his first clunker of an appearance. Wick and Ryan are still finding it, but don't look irrevocably broken. It's a decent group now that Winkler and Underwood have been identified as the weak links. Replace them with more talented guys, probably one via trade and one with one of the live arms down at South Bend (the dream is Marquez or Carraway doing some rookie David Price/K-Rod things), and suddenly you've got a pen you can go pretty far with.

    That's really helpful. That's mostly what I had assumed, but it hadn't yet occurred to me that there are very unlikely to be games on 9/28. I guess the remaining question is if/how long the break is between the WC round and the DS. But I'll be probably do 9/29-10/5 figure that covers me for everything except maybe the 4th day of the DS.

    Do we know, assuming it happens, the playoff schedule? I know the regular season ends 9/27, but not sure how this new first round works. Is it right away on Monday? Basically my PTO is use it or lose it, and since I can't actually travel I want to take time during that period where there's weekday playoff baseball. Under the old format 9/29-9/30 would be the wildcard games at night, with 10/2 and 10/5 being the potential four game days. But under this format should I assume that entire week is going to be packed with games?

    I think it means he has been overtaken as the 7th/8th starter. Hopefully that's because Alzolay or somebody else has looked good and rather than Cotton looking bad.

    Curious if Hader and/or Peralta are available. 35 pitches probably warrants two days off, but if you're the Brewers and have a tight lead late today it'd be pretty hard to resist the temptation. Although honestly Suter is the scariest arm in that pen for me at this point, so very relieved to have him out of the mix.

    Ugh, that sucks. Reading about it though doesn't sound too bad, he should hopefully be back before the deadline. He might be limited to DH duty, which while not ideal isn't a huge issue here, and may be worth it if that lowers the asking price.

    There's a ton in here, but one thing that stood out is that the Astros may start selling. Michael Brantley would REALLY help lengthen the lineup, and reduce the swing and miss issues Brantley Bryant Rizzo Contreras Schwarber Baez Happ Heyward Kipnis Team would still need a lefty masher for the bench and a pen arm, but horsefeathersing hell that lineup would destroy.

    90-93 in the second, which is more in line with where he should be as a starter. Was probably just amped for his first MLB start in a few years.

    So....uhhhh....does Colin Rea sit 93-94 as a starter now? Or is he treating this this just a "relief" appearance and he's gonna come out after 2?

    They really need to get Underwood’s spot figured out. I realize it’s pedantic to be commenting about the last spot of an extended bullpen on a team with the best record in baseball, but if they can only use him in blowout losses it’s time to move on. They already have a spot for Kimbrel to work through things. With today effectively being a bullpen day and 5 games in 3 days coming up they need to roll the dice on a different arm at South Bend. I'm guessing he's here for the next five days in case the team needs bulk innings, and barring an impressive outing or two gets let go for Quintana next Friday.

    I assume the plan is Rea for 3-4, Sadler for 2, and then go from there? I hope the offense shows up because the Brewers basically emptied the tank on their pen last night.

    :beg: I believe this would get the team pretty close to having everyone relevant who was slated to be above South Bend playing. And while certainly not good, I tend to think the really young guys aren't being hurt as much spending a full year on mechanics and conditioning.

    That's fair, maybe they end up having to get creative, like they did with Jesse Chavez two years ago. Thankfully, as bad as the team has been at FA pitching the last few years, they've been stellar at trading for guys on the fly and having them produce. Chavez two years ago, Wick/Ryan/Wieck last year, and too early to tell but possibly Sadler and/or Tepera this year. And those were all up and down type arms at the time of being acquired, I'd like to see what they can do with someone already has pretty stellar stuff, like Miguel Castro on the O's.

    Yeah, I think the bleeding has stopped on the bullpen. I feel decent about all 6 of those guys. The problem still is there's not anyone who I feel really good about. A lot of those guys are still missing an MPH or two, I'm hoping simply because summer camp wasn't a real ST. Like I'll be very quick to fully trust Ryan when he's hitting 90 MPH again, and Wick when he's sitting 95 instead of just touching 95. It's not hard to see a path to the pen fairly quickly being an outright strength. Have 2-3 of the above guys show they are (or still are) higher end guys, grab an impact guy via trade, and have one of Carraway or Marquez come up and shove.

    Guessing this is what Alzolay is getting called up for. He gets the 2nd game Monday, Q gets the second game Wednesday?

    Broadly I like this idea. That said I think Bote is more valuable than Bradley. In a year where the balance could be made up with prospects that's an easy fix, but it might be tricky given current circumstances. I feel like the Bote/Bradley value gap is a top 10 in your system guy, but not quite a top 100 guy. Those are specifically the types of guys not at teams' alternate sites this year (and even guys at alternate sites would have to be scouted via video and Statcast rather than in person scouts). I do wonder if we see lots of deals with PTBNLs this month, with the hope that there is an AFL 2.0 this year where teams can get looks at a broader range of guys.
