  1. Bryce Ball dong #6. He really ought to be at Iowa soon.
  2. He's gotten a lot of Javy comps. Now to be very clear we're talking 2015-2017 era Javy. Pre breakout when he was ideally taking most of his ABs against lefties and wasn't yet a GG caliber SS. Morel doesn't have the insane athleticism to ever become super saiyan Javy from '18/'19, but could end up a solid everyday guy or more likely a championship level reserve.
  3. Ironic that Willson was the one cheering most for him there...I think he was the last Cub to homer in his first AB?
  4. So Hughes appears to combine the funkiness of old friend Kyle Ryan with stuff that's pretty average. That's gonna play.
  5. I'm probably in the minority but I'm enjoying this interview. Miley seems like a cool dude
  6. I don't know if he's thread worthy but looks like Brandon Hughes is also coming up too I wonder if the COVID-wave has finally subsided and they're cleaning up the roster now? Something like: - Morel and Hughes called up - Robertson and Stroman off the COVID IL - Leiter optioned to Iowa - Menez, Gsellman, and Vargas DFA'd And then Schwindel probably needs to start looking over his shoulder when Frazier's ready
  7. Or this is a good point, it might be more about CF than SS
  8. did simmons hurt himself last night? wasn't that his first full game as a cub? I'm speculating based on the chatter in the game thread that he was throwing sidearm last night. But given that Morel was only at AA (though he seemed more than ready for Iowa) it seems like this is a "Uh oh we need someone who can credibly backup SS until Hoerner's back" move. Which I'm glad they're not counting on tubby Villar to do it anymore.
  9. Have to assume Vargas or Simmons are injured?
  10. After last night Rucker's numbers are pretty solid. He hasn't really pitched in high leverage situations at all, but if he is indeed a solid reliever, then the bullpen is now about seven deep: Robertson Wick Givens Martin Effross Norris (also seems to be rounding into good form) Rucker And I think we're about to be point where some of the Iowa guys are looking closer to ready (Hughes and Leeper first up).
  11. I think the new rules will help make multi-inning relief more viable. I kind of wonder if the typical pitching staff in a few years is: 5x SP 1x Closer 2x Setup arms 2x Middle Relief arms (with an emphasis on option-ability and/or having a rubber arm) 2x Long Relievers (I imagine one you feel able to use in leverage situations, and one who's more of a project e.g. how we have Thompson + Rucker right now) That said, it's disheartening that SO MANY of our good arms' trajectory seems to be moving toward the 9-15 batters faced range. At the MLB level Thompson, Steele, and Alzolay all look destined for that role and then on the MiLB level the arms you called out plus Jensen and Riley Thompson. Simple odds say that a few of those guys will 80th percentile outcome their way to legit starter status, but it's really hard to say right now who those guys will be. Iowa's bereft enough of SP talent at this moment that there's still time to play it by ear, but enough arms are high enough up the ladder that the deadline to make at least ~half of those decisions is when minor league assignments are made next year coming out of ST.
  12. That's awesome. I thought it was certainly possible with how much IL time he's had, but glad to see it confirmed. So if he needs to stay at Tenn until August that's not really a problem.
  13. I think aside from the homer it's mostly been going the other way still. It's interesting that him and Pinango are essentially working on the exact same things, I don't think any of us saw that coming into the year. I'm curious what the plan is with Anderson Espinoza. I was checking in on him this morning and Fangraphs says he's on his last minor league option. They're not always right (I love that somewhere finally has it for every player but it does come with some mistakes), but if they are I kind of think they have maybe another month before they have to pull the rip cord on him as a SP. His numbers at AA aren't terrible, but if he has to be in MLB full time by the end of the year, he's about out of runway. Relatedly, we're far enough removed from the lockout that there's gotta be something wrong with Vizcaino beyond visa issues.
  14. Going back to last night the three hits Rowan Wick has given up were hit and 57, 74, and 71 MPH
  15. Narrator: "He could not manage" The error didn't help matters. Made quick work of the 5th and 6th too. Really nice to see
  16. Narrator: "He could not manage"
  17. Steel is SHOVING so far today. Let's see if he can manage to not fall apart the second time through the order
  18. Patrick Wisdom hit a monster dong, and Rick Sutcliffe's trying to take credit for it?
  19. Seiya has had a rollercoaster of a first inning, Cubs up 1-0
  20. Finally up over .200 for the season too. Hopefully by this time next week he has his overall season line up to a solid place
  21. Bryce Ball on base 3 more times today. If things continue on their current trajectory, we should do a 1B moving day within the next month. Cut Schwindel, call up one of Maldonado/Young, and bump Ball up to Iowa
  22. Owen Caissie since 4/29: .273/.368/.424, 7.9% BB, 18.4% K James Triantos since 4/20: .338/.420/.454, 11.4% BB, 14.8% K Reggie Preciado since 5/1: .300/.333/.433, 3% BB, 27.3% K FG doesn't have groundball data in their gamelogs, but still feels like Caissie and Triantos are too on the ground right now, while obviously Reggie's not walking enough. Still great to see three guys who started the year in deep funks start to come out of it. Also, as a bonus, here's Yonathan Perlaza since 4/28: .270/.471/.568, 25.5% BB, 23.5% K Feels like we need to talk about him more. All the scouting folks are very meh on him, but there's a lot of fun stuff in his offensive profile and he's no longer *that* far away from the majors.
  23. :flythew: Wick decided that if he was gonna get horsefeathered by the BABIP god's he'd just strike everyone out
  24. Sutcliffe getting irate about pitch selection when it leads to ball at 57 MPH off the bat is so on brand
