  1. Sharma at one point said they were planning to trade him the winter of '22/'23 but when he had that gruesome winterball injury that obviously scuttled things.
  2. Tony Campana?
  3. 2 things: - Why are we concerned with Hoerner improving? Taking lateral steps is fine when you're already very good. Doubly so when you're also playing on a team friendly contract. - The Swanson stuff is, respectfully, very silly. Swanson was a +7 defender last year via DRS, +14 via Statcast, and +5 via BP's numbers. Actuarially there aren't a ton of 32+ year old shortstops, but actuarially if you're still elite at the position at 30 there's not a lot of reason to suspect youll have played yourself off the position before you're 32. I do actually tend to agree this is Hoerner's last year here. It's hard to ignore the smoke around him getting traded this past offseason. I think also the team needs to proactively move one or two of the guys set to hit FA after '26 over the next 12 months, and Hoerner's combo of talent/salary and lack of a NTC likely makes him among the easiest to trade.
  4. Oh that's just cruel
  5. Did Devin Williams end up holding onto his beard? I saw he still had it when he initially reported to camp, so I assume he already knew this was coming?
  6. It would be cool if one of the bat-only types from last year's draft like Brethowr or Alvararez popped off this year Also, just now as I just went to FG to look at what Brethowr did last year I discovered that they now have college stats!
  7. Jack Neely's mustache gives him some Henry Cavill in Mission Impossible
  8. Brad Keller's velo was WAY up
  9. Extremely early returns but Workman's defense appears to be as advertised
  10. Oh jeez Bobby Miller It's usually a good sign when the ball goes flying, but scary
  11. Yeah velo looks like it was up about an MPH, though we'll see if that sticks as he lengthens out
  12. The ABS is gonna be such a game changer, love it
  13. Brett Bateman already had little power, he might be Nick Madrigal the first few months of the season now.
  14. It won't happen, but I'd play Seiya in CF against some lefties. I've always heard that CF is the easiest position on the diamond if you have the requisite athleticism. Seiya does, and that would get him more in the field time to hopefully keep him as happy as possible.
  15. I feel like over the last 6 months there have been a lot of little breadcrumbs that make you think the team is *really* high on Alcantara. This is the latest IMO.
  16. I think that would require Tucker regularly playing CF. Doesn't seem unreasonable but we haven't heard anything to that effect yet AFAIK.
  17. Canario is getting DFAd for Turner So PCA does not get a platoon partner. Berti's the backup CF until Alcantara comes up full time.
  18. Apparently several additional parks in Arizona added Statcast for this year. So the Cubs will play in front of tracking for 10 of their games, a lot more than the last few years. A few things that will be worth checking on IMO: - After making it a point of emphasis this winter, has Taillon gotten any velo back? - Do the guys who ended the year on the IL look right? - Anyone change their repertoires in a way we can tie back to Tyler Zombro?
  19. I think it's less the CBA and more Jed's job uncertainty. Like the contracts they offered Scott and Bregman both passed into the new CBA. My read is Jed's seat is warm enough that he just doesn't have a ton of latitude to extend money beyond his contract. I think that's also part of why there's some unused money going into this season. Jed doesn't get the benefit of going right up to the CBT line without special permission from Tom, because the line can be a bit of a moving target.
  20. I'd be highly skeptical teams still have significantly better models than the public for measuring defense in the Statcast era. Especially in the outfield.
  21. Two years ago I remember Sahadev Sharma going out on a limb that he thought Devers would be Hoyer's first mega contract. This FO apparently loves him. There is a 0.0% chance of something happening right now. But a year from now if Jed strikes out on Tucker and Devers/Boston look like they need a divorce? Still doesn't feel super likely but it'd be welllll north of 0.
