  1. Can Neifi be traded before the June 15 deadline w/o his consent? If he wants to start and doesn't, maybe we can all hope he will be used in a trade to a team that will give him a starting role.
  2. SSR: If Bradley is non-tendered, he becomes a FA. Then the Cubs will have to bid against other teams for his services. IMO, Bradley will get more being a FA than he will in arbitration. Just my opinion. I disagree, I see him getting 4M+ in arbitration, and I think his clubhouse problems are going to make him greatly undervalued on the open market. And why would his "problems" not affect him in arbitration?

  4. Even if the Cubs can swing a trade with LA for Bradley, he still is not under contract so Hendry will either have to work out a deal with him or tender him. Either way, it will cost the Cubs prospects plus a new deal for Bradley, albeit a one year deal. Any guesses what Bradley might get with arbitration?
  5. What would a package of Walker and CPatt and a high pitching prospect (Hill?) get us from the Tribe? Would a package like that get us Sizemore and a prospect? Is that too much for Sizemore? Would Sizemore fullfill the Cubs' RF need?
  6. And if they do, they will most certainly be looking to dump the remainder of Kaz's contract. There was quite a bit of talk on this board about going after Kaz around the trade deadline. Is that interest still around? Could he be what the Cubs are looking for if the Mets eat a good bit of the remainder of his deal? This sound just like something Hendry might gamble on.
  7. If Furcal stays in Atlanta, the Mets will still be looking for a 2b. Anyone here interested in trading for Kaz as our ss/leadoff?
  8. Vance, don't the Cubs have to wait a few weeks before Hendry can begin negotiating for Giles? I thought there is a 2 week window after the WS where current teams have exclusive negotiation rights to their own FAs. :?
  9. What is the date eligible FA players must declare FAgency?
  10. Nor should it since the Cubs have holes other than closer that need to be filled first.
  11. I'd wait to find out about Giles first. Hoops, what are you hearing from your sources about Giles insofar as either the Cubs showing interest or the rumour about him staying in SD?
  12. Since the Brewers seem to be going in the youth direction and have a nack for finding/developing CFs, anyone think they would do a swap of Clark for CPatt? If the Cubs need to throw in some pitching, then who?
  13. Can anyone shed any light on what positions the Cards are going to have to fill for next season? IIRC, they will have 2 OF positions to fill if Walker retires (Sanders I believe is a FA) meaning they will definitely be in the Giles sweepstakes. And I believe Morris is a FA as well. So the Cubs could be looking at bidding against their biggest rival this offseason. Anyone care to predict who St. Louis will be after? Have fun.........
  14. I realize the Cubs have a great deal of money to throw around this offseason but a lot of you are acting like Giles is virtually a sure thing. As much as I wish that were true, I have seen nothing anywhere indicating he is even remotely interested in leaving the west coast and, if so, coming to the Cubs. But since money often is the top reason where a FA signs, Hendry will have to make an insane offer to land Giles, and we all know that is not his style.
  15. I think Giles should be the first priority given that the Cubs don't have as many fall back options for a RF as they do for ss/2b and they have enough $ to lure Giles away from the coast. I can live with an offseason of Giles, Lofton/some other reliable CF w/good obp, and a SP and a reliever--as long as they resign Nomar and TWalker and let Macias and Perez go.
  16. Anyone know if Nomar cleared? If he is not in the Cubs' future plans and since Neifi did not clear, then Nomar should go either via trade or DFAing to give guys like Cedeno and McClain playing time.
  17. What most of us tend to forget, 2003 was supposed to be a "rebuilding" year for the Cubs too. It was, IIRC, year 2 in their 4-5 year plan to rebuild into a consistent contender. No one predicted ST. Louis and Houston would have sub-par season and the Cubs would sneak in on the shoulders of what ended up being a terrific pitching staff. The Cubs ended up making moves late that year which helped them into the playoff but were not quite enough to get them to the WS. And the moves they made disrupted their rebuilding plan. I still content 2003 was the year the Cubs should have realized was their year and moves should have been made late in the year to insure a WS title.
  18. I guarantee you both Billy Beane and Theo Epstein are directly involved in who plays and who doesn't. It isn't enough that Hendry fires Baker at the end of the year -- which I'm still doubtful will even happen -- he has to force Baker to take advantage of these built-in chances to give youngsters a shot. Involved, yes. But I doubt even Beane and Theo tell their managers who to play on a daily basis.
  19. I doubt there is a GM in the league who tells his manager who to put in the lineup on a daily basis. I also doubt it is Hendry's MO to tell Dusty who to play. Hendry gives Dusty the players. It's Dusty's job to use them correctly. If he doesn't, I have confidence JH will not renew Dusty's contract after next year.
  20. Yes, you root for the Cubs to win because if they don't, then nothing else matters!
  21. Anyone else notice on the replay of the first attempted DP that the runner was so far away from second as he slid toward Perez to break up the DP that he did not even touch the base? Could that have been called interference even tho Perez missed the base?
  22. I too take pass on Griffey. Let's not get sucked into the recent better playing of the team and take a knee jerk reaction by taking on that huge contract with the hope that he will be the difference maker. This team is still very streaky, and I'd rather just let this team see what it can do the rest of this year and then build on that. The only deal I'd be interested in is another starting pitcher, like Glavine who has cleared waivers.
