  1. I've missed Lester's last few starts. Any theories as to what's going on? Results seem more than what we would expect from regression since the break, but I don't know if velocity is down, is he fighting their some discomfort, etc... Should we be looking at shutting him down for a bit, even if it means Walkman gets a couple of starts? I want later healthy for the postseason more than I want Walkman to not start anymore...
  2. Yeah, I was definitely slow on the draw on that one.
  3. I'd rather keep Happ unless Chatwood is going back too and they're picking up his contact, which would never happen. I hope the Minor Leaguers are fringy types...
  4. Yeah, I suspect he was fairly sick during most of the post-season run. I thought he was going to die soon or something. Don't know about Pat, but I sure as hell was hung over after each of the last three wins. Wouldn't blame him if he was too.
  5. Sounds like Hamels will start on Wednesday. Chatwood is out of the pen beginning on Tuesday...bout time!
  6. Maybe Yu's just following the example set by Roger Clemens at the end of his career. If you only throw half the season, you can make it to the playoffs and still be fresh.
  7. Cards just traded Sam Tuivailala to the Mariners for Minor Leaguers. But they're not sellers doing a rebuild...
  8. Late submission... But didn't Jr Lake start out on fire too?
  9. Sooo... Buddy of mine posted on Facebook that the Holland signing made them a 100 win team and division favorites. After the first game with the Mets was over, he slightly reduced his forecast and said he thought they were worth at least a good 70 wins.
  10. Sounds like CarGo back to the Rox for 8 mil.
  11. I didn't get to see it... if the mlb app game log is right... he had a 9 pitch inning, all 9 swings and misses with no contact? That is impressive.... Whatever Hickey had him do, he needs to keep doing it.
  12. I was there yesterday as well. Butler looked terrible, no movement on his pitches at all, he's lucky they didn't do more damage against him. I think he had one swing and miss the whole time. Farell looked good. Maples had good movement and velocity but control want there yet. Underwood's outing was quick, didn't see enough to get a good impression.
  13. I don't disagree... But few thought it was a good contract at the time, and in hindsight, I don't think anyone would have done it again (we got what, maybe 2 WAR from the last four or five years we had him?). At the time, I would have preferred opening up the pocketbook a year or two earlier and nabbing Vlad or Beltran over Soriano. All that said, I would sign Soriano again in a heartbeat over that contract they gave Hosmer. what? no actually, yes. 1.7 over his last 4 with us... With regular old WAR. If you want to argue that this is a good case study of fWAR over WAR, okay, I'll give you that, but I'd still say the contract was bad there at the end
  14. I'm not defending Hendry, but there's a humongous difference between those 2 moves. At least the Cubs signed a bunch that off season. Bought themselves into being the favorites. Plus, Sori was a hell of a lot better player than Hosmer. I don't disagree... 15. Padres fans now know how I felt when we signed Soriano... Ownership picking the wrong year and the wrong guy to open the pocketbook for.
  16. Then win it again. Then we'll have to watch Keith Stone lament how our window only has two years left until we have to rebuild again.
  17. I still wouldn't do it... But putting that outfield behind an IF of Bryzzo, Javy and Addy would have to be one of the all time great defensive alignments.
  18. I think we're finally seeing the results of the luxury tax escalator kicking in. The risk of giving long term expensive contracts is significantly higher under the current system.
  19. If Theo offered a package that included Russell, Almora, and Montgomery, then I'm going to assume that proposal was for more than just Machado. Most likely Britton before he exploded, maybe Gausman?
  20. The Longoria trade was a win-win to me. Either the Cards would have gotten stuck with that contract, or they miss out on one of their targets yet again. Cards fans have to be sitting uneasy right now.
  21. Dumb question for my own personal curiosity. If the Cubs sign Darvish and want to go after Harper and stay under the LT limit next year, could they do something like sign him to a 20 year contract, heavily front loaded with like a million per year in the last 10 years, and a player opt out after the main paying years are up? If the LT is based on AAV, I'm assuming AAV is calculated assuming the player doesn't opt out, so that would spread his pay over 20 years instead of 10 for LT purposes. It's a pretty obvious proposal to circumvent the LT rules with the top player... But is that accurate for how they apply it?
  22. With half of the guys on that list that are late in their careers or retired (and all but a few with WARs under 10), if you traded them around their age 24 or 25 season, you'd be trading them at peak value. With half of them, you'd regret it unless you got some exceptional value in return. That list doesn't really convince me to hold or trade. For 1 guaranteed year of Manny or just in general? I wasn't debating the merits of 4 years of Russell vs 1 year of Machado... Just that the analysis that links historical comparisons to Russel's "career arc" really does nothing to better inform us of what to reasonably expect from Russel going forward, and certainly doesn't make him untradeable. Personally, we broke the curse and got a title. The monkey is off of our backs. I prefer to see moves that better support a dynasty over short term moves. I'd trade for Machado if he agreed to an extension... But given that Angelo's won't allow a 72 hour negotiating period, I wouldn't trade Russel for him since you have to assume one year of Machado only. Maybe a prospect package centered on Albertos or something.
  23. Travis Wood DFAd by the Padres. Any interest in bringing him back on a cheap deal?

  25. I'm still waiting for Snopes to prove this was just a big hoax.
