  1. Pardon the rant, but I'm a bit pissed. I've been trying to order some swag from the MLB shop. The site says they offer a 15% military discount... but they won't ship gear to a military APO address, so they keep refusing my order. What the hell, MLB? I don't even care about the discount, I only mention because it's hypocritical to say you support military and offer it, but then refuse to process an order for a jersey because you have an APO address.
  2. That sounds really freaking good right about now...
  3. I was just going back over some roll up stats on the season and came across one that I didn't notice... Given how healthy the staff was, with only Lackey had a short-term DL stint, only Lester broke 200 innings (barely). Joe clearly had a quick hook for Kyle at times this season, as he only hit 188 innings despite not missing a turn through the rotation. Given his success this season, does Joe give him a longer leash next year? Or does Joe manage him exactly the same...because it's hard to argue with the results Kyle obtained given how Joe was managing him? What's the over / under on innings? I'm going to guess he'll break 200, but barely, assuming he stays healthy.
  4. What channel is that on? I'm not seeing it anywhere.
  5. Other than baseball, I primarily like to enjoy a good fight, especially when a hockey game breaks out.
  6. I usually follow hockey, football, and basketball in that order once baseball is over. However, I just don't have anywhere near the interest as normal seasons. I just want the winter meetings and then spring training to start.
  7. So now Da Bears have the longest championship drought in the city. How long until they get back in the mix? I'm guessing not until the McCaskeys divest.
  8. See the 2014 to 2015 Royals as well in that regard. That said... I'm okay going all in on one top closer... But I'm hesitant to pay for two. That's risky. Maybe wait till the trade deadline for another.
  9. I still have my W hanging in the living room window, hung in front of the curtains. I have no idea how long it will stay up... Maybe until it's time to put up Xmas decorations? Till pitchers and catchers report? Might be the hardest damned decision I'll have to make over the next four months.
  10. Re: Gurriel... Given our recent success with developing ML hitters... I wonder if that gives us any advantage signing the higher-end Intl free agents. Even if they're blocked, someone will get hurt, moved or tail off somewhere at some point.
  11. That does make you wonder how much tinkering we really want to do this off season. It almost seems like it would be easy to take a step backwards by over-tinkering if we're not careful. I definitely don't see us making too many moves. I'm thinking the priorities this offseason go 1) closer, 2) 1 or 2 middle-relief options, at least one of which can serve as a spot-starter/swing man, 3) backup OFer who can play any OF position. Unless they're pissed at Montero (in which case add 4) backup catcher), I don't see them doing much more than that, unless they find a surprising, willing trade partner for a blockbuster on an elite, controllable starting pitcher.
  12. 5/125 for a reliever sounds nuts, but the market is thin and there's uncertainty with the CBA, so I wouldn't say impossible. I could more likely see him getting 6/100 to 6/120 though. I like Blanco, that'd be a nice pickup. I think picking him up though sets up another move. We'd have Schwarbs, Zobrist, Heyward, Almora, Szczur, Soler, and Blanco all getting OF time. Not to mention a few token OF starts by KB. That means probably two of those guys get dealt (Szczur is out of options, right?), with two of Szczur, Soler and Almora being the most likely to go. Didn't Atlanta have interest in Soler before? Maybe he's part of a Wisler deal if that panned out... I don't see that pen coming to fruition. Someone else would have to move. This FO seems to like having a couple of swing guys in the pen, we'd need someone in the mold of Cahill or Wood in the middle, especially since we don't project to have any ML close options in AAA next year.
  13. I wouldn't be against that, your approach is pretty sound. I just think Almora will turn into a very good starting CFer, but never elite. I could be wrong... My thinking is IF we bring back Dex, then I'd be open to essentially moving a decent-ceiling ML ready prospect for a higher ceiling prospect that's a couple of years away when Dex starts to decline. Extremely unlikely though, I know... If we don't bring back Dex, which seems more likely to me, then that wouldn't make any sense.
  14. As of right now I'm not sure you can trade Hammel simply based on rotation depth. Zastryzny was good in a small sample size but I don't want him pitching a full season if someone goes down long term. Personally, I'm debating how interested I would be at going after Nova (no pick attached to him) and moving Hammel to the pen and taking Wood's swing man / long relief role. Considering how good he has been the last few years in the first half of the season before tailing off at the end, I'm thinking that might be a better role for him. Keep the innings down, and have a great long-man in the pen for the playoffs. Then you've got one less pitcher to replace the following off-season.
  15. How long of a deal would he expect? I have a hard time seeing him settle for a one year deal. If I had to guess, I'd put him about a neutral-WAR guy offensively, slightly above average in CF next year. It'd have to be a team-friendly deal to get me excited...but if we could land him for a year and he platooned with Almora, I'd be okay with that. Buy us more time to see how Almora continues to develop.
  16. Given all of the good vibes around how likable just about everyone on this team is... I was disappointed to see this so soon after the series. Not cool, he just lost some stock in my book. He needs to resign himself to taking over Ross's role (personal catcher for one of our stud starters, backup/mentor/clubhouse leader the rest of the time). If he can't do that, not sure I would want him on the team next year. I'd skip the personal catcher stuff. He's gone after 2017. He can just be the back up and give Willson some rest here and there. Agreed...I'm not a fan of the personal catcher either... but I'd be surprised if he doesn't catch 90%+ of Jake's starts next year if he's still on the team.
  17. Good post. Joe's handling of the pen in the WS wasn't perfect...but you have to take the good with the bad, and I still think Joe's one of the top 3 overall managers in the game, with a strong argument for best.
  18. With the versatility of the roster and some of the guys having options (like Almora), I'm hoping we take a flyer on a guy like Greg Holland as an extra reliever to start the year if we don't bring back Chapman or get Jansen. Frankly, I'd love two shutdown closers next year on the roster, with the possibility of adding a third at the trade deadline for the post season.
  19. I always assumed they wouldn't. Don't know if there was any spoken understanding, but the way he came back at such a bargain after not getting interest because of the QO tag, I don't think they'd do that to him twice.
  20. Fascinating post. Not a serious proposal, but an interesting one to debate. If you could go back in time, knowing how the season worked out... Would you trade Hendricks for Kershaw? We probably don't win the series... But who wouldn't do Hendricks for Kershaw before the season?
  21. ? http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/17973532/chicago-cubs-catcher-miguel-montero-critical-manager-joe-maddon-role-team-postseason Given all of the good vibes around how likable just about everyone on this team is... 22. Considering the logjam in the outfield, are there any trade scenarios for a top CF prospect that make sense? If we resigned Dex (if he could be had by overpaying on a shorter 3 year deal, maybe...), we could build a package around Soler and / or Almora for a top CF prospect that would be ready by Dex's second or third year. Or do we hold those guys to target pitchers so we can reload after 2017? Decisions like these represent great problems to have...
  23. When I first saw this post headline, for a split second I thought they wrapped up another one year deal with him, then I realized it's an old headline. I don't blame him. That one year deal was obviously the free agent deal of the year from our perspective, and now he can go back onto the FA market and get paid on a better note than before (at least as far as how he's perceived defensively...).
