  1. I didn't get to watch much of the Stanley Cup and I'm a Blackhawks fan so I really didn't care who won (I sort of was rooting for the Knights), but I did find this very amusing... Definitely NSFW:

  3. https://www.mlb.com/draft/tracker/undrafted There is still a lot of talent available on Day 3. I know some of these kids are going to school and are unsignable. I have no idea how much cash the Cubs have left to spend on players. Probably $200K? Maybe more? Sorry about the image resolution -- just right click on it and select "open image in new tab" if you're interested or click on the link above.

So this was already mentioned a couple pages back. Whoops... Unfort. he hasn't progressed and cost him significantly (blessing they didn't sign him out of HS). I was always hesitant of someone who turns down 850K or more to go to school, especially if it is to be with his gf or something in that realm. I've been burned by this as even though I received credit/compensation for signing a player to a +650K contract, I knew by his hesitancy to sign and still wanting go to college that he might not have what it takes mentally. He ended up signing and never made it out of rookie ball. It's a different story if his parents and adviser are unfort. pushing him towards College. I did an in-home with a family to take the tests as well as sit down with the family, his mom mentioned on several occasions how he was going to college (Oklahoma commit) despite the distain from the kid and the father of repeatedly mentioning that. I remember thinking as I was leaving Crystal lake, have fun in school... If you don't mind me asking, which team did you work for as a scout? You have access to amazing scouting reports/intel and you knew the most on Kelenic obviously. Have you ever attended the Under Armour All-America game at Wrigley? Yeah, I would sign straight out of HS without a moment of hesitation if the signing bonus was six figures + paid tuition for college. I wonder if agents aren't doing their due diligence or some parents/family friends/the prospect himself are just that dumb...
  5. I wonder when Mekkes will get called up. I have little doubt he'll continue to dominate in the minors. AAA isn't that different from AA, but jumping up from AAA to the big leagues is tough for almost everyone. It'll be fun to watch him pitch whenever that next promotion happens.
  6. Not sure if this was mentioned already in this thread, but the Cubs strongly considered drafting RHP Derek Casey out of HS back in 2014. This is another example of why kids shouldn't turn down big offers to turn pro right away. http://www.richmond.com/sports/college/schools/university-virginia/this-time-uva-s-derek-casey-the-former-hanover-star/article_50fa6bda-6844-11e8-bf15-3342ed11ee00.html EDIT: My bad guys. 7. Hey! That's a fun pick by the Cubs right there. They take D.J. Artis, CF from Liberty University.
  8. So Joey Gerber, the closer for the Illini still hasn't been selected yet. He's ranked 126 on MLB's list and has good stuff. I wonder if he's going back to school and informed teams he won't be signing?
  9. Interesting. The Cubs select Kohl Franklin, a prep arm from Oklahoma.
  10. Huh, I thought Drew Rasmussen would fall further considering he has 2 TJS now. Must be an underslot deal there.
  11. The 7-figure bonus overslots under this regime were Underwood in the 2nd round in 2012; Sands (4th), Steele (5th) and Cease (6th) in 2014; Hudson (3rd) and Wilson (4th) in 2015; and Estrada (6th) in 2017. Hannemann got seven figures as well as a 3rd rounder. 2013 I think? Yeah, I think he signed for $1 mil or right around there. Yup. http://www.bleachernation.com/2013/06/19/chicago-cubs-sign-3rd-rounder-jacob-hannemann-for-1-million-which-is-well-over-slot/
  12. Both Cease and Estrada were 6th-round picks. Maybe this will be the round? D.J. Wilson was 4th round, he's the only other million-dollar superslot I can recall. (Well, obviously Sands and Steele, too...) The 7-figure bonus overslots under this regime were Underwood in the 2nd round in 2012; Sands (4th), Steele (5th) and Cease (6th) in 2014; Hudson (3rd) and Wilson (4th) in 2015; and Estrada (6th) in 2017. Let's not mention the other ones that didn't work out... Yeah, I know -- Underwood is still a prospect and has a chance to reach the majors. I'm not high on the other guys on that list.
  13. I am not a scout, but that does not look like a good breaking ball. It definitely wasn't a strike lol. I know that much.
  14. Hopefully, the Cubs have saved enough to do their overslot strategy in the 6th round from year's past. It worked when we took Dylan Cease in 14 and last year we took Jeremy Estrada. Not sure what highly rated arm is available and affordable.
  15. Huh, this seems weird to me... Who is this "Gmoney08" guy? I suspect this might be a fake account/burner account designed to boost the reputations of Theo/Jed/Jason. Is this your account here Jed Hoyer? [tweet] [/tweet] [tweet] [/tweet] I don't want you to get in trouble. You probably need to delete this account and do this now: Sorry Jed!
  16. Nope. Jed Lowrie had a better bat and a lower chance at sticking at SS. I think Nico has a better chance at sticking at SS? Not sure about a Cabrera comp either. I think Cabrera had a better hit tool/bat in his scouting reports too
  17. Yeah, he's probably not going to get slot but I wouldn't expect too massive a savings. Maybe a few hundred thousand. We said the same thing about others in year's past? I think he might get around slot. Maybe a few $100K in savings.... Not happy with the pick, but he's a utility player at least. Whatever.
  18. Right there with you. Meh on Rolison and Jenista and Turang. Definitely getting a good prospect. Very happy with our chances right now. McClanahan and Gorman are my top rated prospects that are still available. EDIT -- Hankins is right behind those two for me. UK's list is good too.
  19. Damn, my prediction of the Cubs pick happening by 8 is off. This is taking forever! :? I'm happy with how it's proceeding though...
  20. I don't think Singer or Gorman will reach the Cubs. No way is that happening. I could see McClanahan falling that far...
  21. It happens in the drafts of other professional sports so I say it happens here too -- paralysis by analysis.
  22. At this rate, I say switch it up for the Cubs strategy and target one of the falling TOR type arms. If Shane McClanahan is still there when the Cubs are picking they better take him.
  23. You should watch video of his curveball. It's crazy impressive. Best curveball and breaking ball in the draft by far. I'm sure I can find a gif somewhere...
  24. Yeah, I know we shouldn't judge the kid based on his parents, but I hated Weathers when he was on the Cubs. At least I think I did... I like Liberatore way more. Surprised by that decision. Maybe an underslot deal was the difference?
