  1. From the latest Longenhagen chat on Fangraphs: That's pretty weird to read because we were pretty high on Connor Scott leading up to last year's MLB draft. The weird part being that Roederer is now the safest out of those three. I'm assuming by offensive upside it would go Adams, Scott and then Roederer. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/why-not-both-the-board-scouting-stats/ Updated THE BOARD! feature so it includes more options now: Revamped Minor League Leaderboards Added the ability to select multiple seasons Added the ability to filter by organization Added three new league filters: Upper (AAA/AA), Mid (A+/A), and Low Levels (A-/R) They explain all the changes and options in the link above.
  2. I think Bryce gets traded and the relationship goes south at some point. He's probably a DH by year 6 or 7. Maybe he moves to 1B. It sucks that the Cubs missed out, but at least we have Heyward in RF, amirite?
  3. Moises Alou never went into the stands to catch a ball in his life yet he threw a fit because of Bartman. Maybe I remember things differently but I can't remember him ever backing off on blaming Bartman. Well he somewhat backed off. Claims he still would have caught the ball but it wasn't Bartman's fault. Moises Alou endorses Cubs' hopes to honor Steve Bartman No way is he catching that ball. He was a shitty defender. I also greatly disliked Alou. He always seemed like an horsefeathers teammate/person.
  4. Yeah, I was discussing this awhile back with someone (in general baseball chit-chat). I said he was capable of playing in the NFL and that he seemed barely shorter than Russell Wilson. I thought he had a brighter future in baseball than football, but I'm not sure about that anymore. He's 5' 10 1/8" and Wilson is 5' 10 5/8", according to ESPN. So this really shouldn't be a big deal anymore. Hopefully, he plays well and opens more opportunities for undersized QBs going forward.
  5. You always want prospects to succeed, but I have concerns. If I were Theo (or Jed) and Oscar de la Cruz is having a good year I'd have no problem including him in a trade for a reliever. Seriously doubt you'll get burned trading him. You'd probably have to include another good prospect(s) to get a deal done for a good reliever.
  6. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/instagraphs/updated-2019-2020-and-2021-draft-rankings-on-the-board/ So they mention a few other players at the beginning of the article. Adley Rutchsman has been moved up to a 60 FV (very surprising), and has now established himself as the clear #1 player in this year's draft class. Also, updated the list on THE BOARD.
  7. [tweet] [/tweet]I've started doing research on draft prospects and watching video when I can. 1B/3B prospect Brett Baty is a weird player to evaluate. He doesn't look great defensively at 3B and looks pretty bad running to first. I don't think he sticks at 3B currently. Also, he's bigger than what he's listed at right now (6'3" and 210 lbs.) and will probably slow down even more as he matures. He doesn't look like a great athlete, but then you watch him play basketball and he's surprisingly agile and quick on the court. He looks pretty good. I have a hard time figuring that out... [tweet] [/tweet] ---- The swing is great and I have little doubt on the bat being good enough to get drafted in the 1st round. The problem is if he's playing 1B in the future (or has to move there eventually) then the bat has to be really special. I mean it could be and he's really performed against some tough pitching. He also has a strong accurate arm and has reached 90 mph on the mound. [bbvideo=853,480] [/bbvideo]
  8. For sure. A lot of scouts and people inside the Cubs organization like Morel. Wouldn't surprise me to see him higher next year, especially if Alzolay graduates. It is a solid list. I like Swarmer and Estrada a lot also. Swarmer more as a RP down the road. Estrada has the stuff to be a middle of the rotation starter if it all comes together. I'm really down on Jose Albertos and Oscar de la Cruz. I think they might be off next year's list. Last thing, I'm glad D.J. Wilson is finally off the list because he sucks (great tools though). I hope Davis isn't the next D.J. Wilson. Brennen Davis is the better athlete and has superior tools.

  10. [tweet] [/tweet]Wow, the Top 10 list from 2011 is depressing as hell. Hayden Simpson...
  11. You know I gotta say I'm kinda sad that Matheny is gone, and now we have the idiot manager that says dumb horsefeathers all the time. I didn't think this would happen with Maddon in charge...
  12. You know Tom still probably loves the guy because he went to horsefeathering Duke.
  13. Tough break (literally). I'm assuming it's his throwing hand/wrist right? This injury will affect his power numbers, but it shouldn't affect his defense (I think), which is his calling card.
  14. Good thing for Theo & company because we really don't have any (pitching prospects). Ahead of the curve again, amirite?
  15. It was pretty bad... I listened to it, and he definitely had scripted answers (someone probably coached him). The reporters didn't ask any hard-hitting questions or follow-ups either. I still don't understand the point of having him on this team. You can educate the players on DV and put in place extensive training and new protocols without having him on this team. I'm glad they're trying to prevent this from ever happening again, but the organization still looks bad while he's here.
  16. Yeah, I saw the link for the article online, but it's from Jim Bowden so why bother? He's a joke inside the industry. Part of the older generation of execs that nobody wants to hire anymore.
  17. This kid looks a crapton like a young Alfonso Soriano. Fun stuff. Also, that Jasson Dominguez guy the Yankees are signing looks freaking ridiculous. Stupid Yankees. Yeah, I see it too. Very projectable body. Good vibes watching this kid. Pretty happy with this agreement.
  18. pecota is big on framing right? i bet if we swapped out contreras for grandal we'd just to first If framing really is this valuable we probably should go to the automated zone sooner than later if HP umps can essentially be tricked in to calling or not calling strikes and that outcome affects win totals this much. I don't think framing really affects win totals that much and that people overstate how good/bad any catcher is at this "skill". Now, are HP umps tricked into calling balls as strikes? Do they mess up on pitches low and/or beneath the strike zone? Do they let the count affect whether to call the next pitch a ball/strike? Obviously, the answer is yes and everyone horsefeathering knows this. I'm really pissed that of all the changes they're thinking of making (universal DH, lowering/pushing back the mound, expanded rosters, etc.) no one wants to even bring up an exploratory study on implementing an automated strike zone. horsefeathers you Rob Manfred and not wanting to get rid of the "human element". Don't give me that BS about the technology not being good enough.
  19. I'm hoping (and praying) that Sinclair somehow fucks this up and can't make good on this deal and the Cubs are forced to look for another distributor. It wouldn't be the first time they screwed up... [tweet] [/tweet]
  20. At least Bote's shirt isn't trash. Yeah, it's definitely not trash; it's horsefeathering amazing. I love that shirt. Every Cubs player should have to wear "El Mago" merch/apparel. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DzOlOEcUwAA68f9?format=jpg&name=large
  21. I wonder about the prudence of basically committing your full IFA bonus pool for one premium prospect like in the alleged agreements of the NYY and A's with Dominguez and Puason, respectively. You can always trade for more space/pool money I guess, but teams might not cooperate. I don't think I'd want the Cubs to pursue this strategy unless they have firm agreements to also acquire more pool money.
  22. I'll have to go back and look, but most players don't go to the AFL the same year they're drafted. I think it's draft pedigree and not wanting "recency bias" to play a part in these evaluations. The people making these lists wonder how good could this player really be if 20+ players were taken ahead of them in the most recent draft. Has that player really jumped ahead of those higher draft picks (enough to warrant being on a top 100 prospect list) in such a short time? Like I'm not certain Nico Hoerner is a better prospect than Alec Bohm. He's certainly performed and hit at a higher level. Do some of the national guys have him ahead of Bohm? http://insider.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/25877678/keith-law-top-prospects-2019 Not sure about the other national guys, but Keith Law has Hoerner ranked #110. I just looked at his Top 100 list and Alec Bohm isn't on there so he must have Hoerner ranked ahead of Bohm now. He's probably not too far behind him.
  23. Yeah, so major league contracts were common for the top prospects (and Scott Boras clients) in the draft going back a few years before MLB banned them (for draft prospects). I'm pretty sure Mark Prior signed a major league contract with the Cubs back in 2001 for like $10.5 million. The Cubs also gave one to Jeff Samardzija. So I guess the plan is that MLB is kinda bringing them back, but there will be some stipulations and probably a cap on the signing bonus/total amount a team could offer. It would look bad if a top 2-sport talent (who is selected further back in the 1st/2nd round) got considerably more than the #1 pick in the same draft.
  24. We all knew they messed up. It was super high-risk/high-reward and they got burned. I think you could defend the selection at the end of the 1st round, but not with the #9 pick in last year's MLB draft. This will probably lead to MLB creating a special exception/rule that will allow teams to offer major league contracts to special 2-sport prospects now. At least something good will come out of it (at the A's expense).
  25. I'll have to go back and look, but most players don't go to the AFL the same year they're drafted.
