We've finally reached the point of the offseason where we re-live the Peavy and Roberts trades. An offseason or trade deadline doesn't officially begin until this happens.
This is where I'm at too.
Yankees offer is probably Gil++
Phillies offer is probably Bohm++?
Do either teams have better secondary and tertiary pieces to even beat Paredes, Alcantara, and Triantos?
I'm going under the assumption that Paredes will be included in the deal because Bregman will sign somewhere else and the Astros want to still be able to compete if they trade Tucker. With Paredes gone we need Shaw to fill in at 3b unless we find someone else to fill that position. Or Nico might be traded and we need Shaw at 2b. With Tucker in the mix we have a surplus of outfielders so I'm including one of Alcantara/Cassie in the deal instead of Shaw/Smith.
What makes the Cubs the favorite? The Phillies and Yankees are the other teams rumored to be interested in Tucker too. If either of those teams miss out on the trade they are 100% out bidding the Cubs in free agency. Plus you gotta compete with whatever other big boy spenders that wanna jump in the sweepstakes.
I'm sure Jed is gonna try to re-sign him but most of the rumors are saying he wants to be a free agent. The Cubs aren't going to win a bidding war in free agency. If they make this trade he's only staying for 1 year.
No thanks to trading Seiya, Shaw, or Smith for a 1 year rental. Tucker will end up signing with a big boy team, the Cubs aren't winning a bidding war to keep him.
