  1. That's substantially more than I expected him to get. I wanted him, but if my options are him or something like Belt + Mancini give me the latter every day. Yeah I thought the same thing. I wonder if the Giants essentially said tell us what you want because we absolutely have to sign you. Was he likely to get a 2 year contract from anyone else?
  2. How in the world does Escobar have negative value?? He makes only $10 mil this year and is expiring. He can play multiple positions and is average to plusish at them. He’s put up 2.3, 2.6, -.5 (COVID year), 2.9 and 3.5 WAR last 5 years. He’s projected for 1-2 WAR this year with average defense but power and can fit in to the lineup in multiple roles. He’s not going to take a lot to get, probably one of the pitchers who can be a SP/RP/Swing type this year and maybe a little extra lotto ticket type. But don’t see Bote having any value to them. MLBTV has him at -2 trade value. It's almost like MLBTV's numbers are just made up. :-k
  3. So I take it you don't think Morel can get better then. Morel can get better because he's young, which is why his trade value is high and he might be of interest to the Blue Jays. Meanwhile we get a solid catcher that's controlled for 3 more years. Blue Jays are desperately searching for a LH hitter - they don't have any interest in Morel for Jansen. Happ, maybe, but he only has 1YR left so I doubt they would do that. They just traded Teoscar Hernandez for a reliever to free up space and money for a LHH.
  4. I'd have preferred Turner by a fair bit but I'm just fine in "missing" out on Correa. Doesn't matter - we won't know till we know. Could the Cubs have signed a worse player than Heyward when they did? What was the acceptance rate on that signing? 102%? It's not like they resigned Andrelton Simmons - now that's a defensive first player.
  5. Never going to happen, Hoyer didn't overpay for Correa, why in the hell would he overpay for a lesser player in Swanson? Have to make certain to save all those funds to do nothing but, hey, look on the bright side won't have to worry about dead money, trying to move a big contract in 2032. Because he can overpay for the lesser player and spend over 100 million less?
  6. ...and the improbable march to the HOF begins.
  7. I'd wondered earlier if they would dangle Tatis for a potential Ohtani trade.
  8. I heard it suggested somewhere that the extra couple years are to get the AAV down. If a player wants $250M, he knows he's unlikely to get another deal at 38 or 40 regardless. So stretch it over 11 years instead of 8. Yea at a certain point the years on these deals are just window dressing. And at least a lower AAV lowers the annual amount towards the tax cap right? It's like its semi-deferred and if he's still useful over the last few years its a bonus. What if he retires? They're off the hook right?
  9. That may go down as the most befuddling turn of events in my Cubs-fan life. It was like for one year, with one guy, we somehow got a hold of the pixie dust ourselves for once. The Rat says "Never Forget!"
  10. Yeah, I love Willson, but I don't see things going all that well for him from age 32ish onward. Which is why I could stomach letting him go. That said, he'll almost certainly hurt us a time or two over the next couple of years, and I'm not looking forward to it. His positional flexibility and introduction of the DH may mitigate the aging question somewhat. I heard an interview with JD last year where he said that if Willie were to come back to the Cubs it was understood that he would be doing much less catching; maybe the Cardinals will transition him as well.
  11. Then BTV is higher than my grandma at a wake and bake. (IMO)
  12. Murphy put up 5.1fwar to Jansen's 2.6 and comes with an extra year of control. It's not that close. Murphy played in twice as many games as Jansen. If you look at bwar its 3.5 to 2.9 and again 1/2 the games played.
  13. That'll work. If the goal is a 70-75 win team, then I think that'll do nicely. So worse than last year?
  14. To be fair that's what every rotation needs.
  15. Jimmy Edmonds Part Deux?!?
  16. So on Baseball Reference his OWar is 2.7 and DWar is .3 but his overall WAR is 2.3 with a positive DWar how is his overall WAR lower than his OWar? Isn't that...unusual??
  17. Why wouldn't Devers sign an extension as a condition of the trade? Is he a Boras client? I tried to look it up, but I couldn't find his agent. He's a perfect fit for what this team needs. Is that even permitted - I didn't think it was - anyone??? The flip side of that is - if he could negotiate with a team prior to being traded to them why would he? From his standpoint its got to be better for him to hit the open market and negotiate with as many teams as possible - no?
  18. Absolutely not - I don't think anybody would lose any sleep if Morel was the lead name in a trade for a star player - 0% chance of it happening in my opinion, but I'd be all in.
  19. Yeah, we have a fair amount of evidence(Mookie, recent deadline packages for rentals) that if Devers gets dealt it's a toss up that a player of PCA's caliber needs to be included at all. The package would probably have to hurt the MLB roster(read: Morel), but Devers isn't Mookie, Ohtani, or Soto and his return would probably reflect that. Devers was the variable; the crux of the discussion was trading PCA. But sure if the Red Sox take Morel for Devers you do that deal 8 times a day. Some other team who is already competitive is going to be willing to offer more than Morel for Devers in hopes of putting them over the top.
  20. I will cop to developing an irrational attachment to certain prospects in the past - Hee-Sop Choi, Brant Brown, Dave Kelton - however PCA is firmly at the top of my no-trade list. Now, I'm 100% on board for not trading either. I'm fine for the bigger acquisitions to come through Free Agency. Want a hot take? How desperate is San Diego to win? Predicated on their belief in re-signing Soto - Tatis for Ohtani with various ancillary parts on both sides as needed. If they can use PCA to get somebody like Devers I’m in. I certainly wouldn't complain about Devers being a Cub...but he's a free agent after next season. It's obviously going take a fair bit more than just PCA, . Do you gut - gut is probably strong but it would likely be a decent sized hit to the system for potentially just a year of Devers? A year in which Cubs aren't really a sure bet to contend? I'd just as soon wait a year, keep the farm intact and take a shot at him after 2023.

  22. Don't mind Sutcliff at all - like the ribbing between himself and Booger.
  23. ...and no hit again through the early innings.
  24. JD was on Toronto Radio this morning and the subject of re-signing Wilson came up and very casually within discussion he mentions he's not sure how much catching he'd be doing through the next contract and specifically mentioned DHing more and going back to playing the OF again. They way he phrased it was that this would be the plan if he re-signed with the Cubs. The other discussion that came up once he was off the air was Ohtani. The 2 Toronto broadcasters (Jeff Blair - who I think is a bit of a tool; Kevin Barker - who I believe was a Brewer top prospect at one point and I think is pretty decent) could not stop going on about what a great fit the Cubs and Ohtani would be. Easily went on for 3 or 4 minutes going as far as to say it "makes too much sense" and even saying how good (physically) he would look in a Cubs uniform. Just a little odd to see broadcasters from another team so exited about the prospect of Ohtani ending up with the Cubs.
