  1. I'm pretty stoked at the possibilities with this draft as there are quite a number of quality baseball names on the list but JP Wheat maybe the best of the bunch. PLUS he's 6-5 185 so his name is very apropos.
  2. That's the problem. With Boras, an extension is EXTREMELY unlikely. If it were any other agent, there would be the thinking that you can make the trade and then work out a deal to extend the player, but I don't think that is the case for most Boras clients. So he's of no use this year - he'd likely just cost the Cubs a draft slot or two - and the chances of the Cubs being competitive next year seem relatively slim - if odds are he's not going to get extended anyway I just as soon hold on for a Free Agent bid.
  3. Are they allowed to get feelers (or more) on an extension prior to trade? I just don't know that it makes sense for the Cubs in their stage of the competitive cycle to mortgage the farm for the privilege of paying the biggest contract in MLB history. Don't get me wrong I'm watching Schwindell, Higgins and Wisdom so I'll certainly watch Soto and 8 Schwindells "Trout it out" for last place but he would seem to be a better fit for a team like the Blue Jays - who even if they only have him till the end of this contract could help them win the WS.
  4. I can't believe Norris was a better option than just leaving Givens in. May as well put Frank the Tank in.
  5. ...and here we go.
  6. Is any team more futile in extras than the Cubs?
  7. Well put. More to the point, if that's all you can get for Happ while he's at peak value, he's of more value to the current and future Cubs than what you can get for him. To me, at least, it makes little sense to trade him. First off just because some website says something doesn't make it fact. Second the Cubs don't need to trade Happ so I can't imagine there'd be a trade scenario where the other team isn't overpaying for Happ - otherwise you're right; you just don't do it. The Jays are in panic mode they've lost 9 of 10 and are out of a WC spot with tiebreakers when everyone in Toronto assumed the division was theirs for the taking. I'm happy to keep Happ but if someone's willing to overpay you have to take a look. And again I don't think it would be Happ straight up I think bullpen arm(s) would be involved as well.
  8. Curious what the Jays would send our way for Happ. Everything they have seems either far too valuable or not nearly valuable enough. I think it would be more than just Happ if it were to happen. Jays are also desperate for bullpen help so it could be fleshed out there. Ortega could be of interest as well as they are severely RH heavy. They are also looking for SP but other than Thompson don't think we have much of interest unless Stroman rattles off a couple of gems in a row possibly.
  9. Blue Jays Happ Yahoo story speculating on Jays Interest in Happ and others.
  10. As good as this was how great would a sweep have been that hung 2 losses on Hader.
  11. Effross isn't going to get you Moreno - Keegan might be a start?? Right, the idea is that pre-arb reliever is the 2nd or even 3rd piece in a deal that also involves a bigger player. Toronto doesn't have much use for Contreras or Happ which further makes it unlikely, but the Mets could desperately use Willson, so if a middle reliever is what gets you over the line to get an Alvarez you tell him to pack his bags. Thompson I would've said the same thing about a month ago, but now that's a little more nuanced a conversation. Toronto is desperate for a LH hitter that's why the got Tapia in the Spring but have been underwhelmed - there've been whispers about them going after Benintendi or Adam Frazier. Contreras is much less likely but there have been concerns about the young catchers (outside of Jansen who has been injured) handling of the pitching staff some suggesting that's reason for the struggles of Kikuchi and Berrios. So if they decide they are all in this year I can squint and see them being interested in a Veteran catcher that plays everyday and they have no commitment to beyond this year. But the main point is if they are looking at the other 2 LHs they'd have to have some interest in Happ I'd think.
  12. A .300 wOBA backup catcher as the downside is more than fine though, and Higgins's all-field approach might be more likely to beat his exit velocities in a similar way that contact managing pitchers can beat FIP with some regularity. Plus he play 1b and 3b in a pinch.
  13. He just seems to have a real solid approach - he's older than I thought so maybe that pixie dust will wear off at some point but he's been nice surprise.
  14. Now what if Omar Moreno were on the table? They have a glut of catchers - the Toronto fans/media would crucify them if they traded Kirk - but man is he tubby; he's definitely a graduate of the Hector Villanueva Culinary School of Catching. Has anyone with that body type had any sort of sustained success? Prince Fielder for awhile, I guess. They are also desperate for a LH bat. Happ, Thompson, Robertson? Ortega for good measure? Probably could get them to throw in Kikuchi who has disappointed but lefties that throw 95-96 don't grow on trees and maybe the Cubs have the right magic wand to fix him. I'm not eager to trade Thompson but how good is Moreno? For sure, if Effross is the barrier in getting a Top 10 overall prospect back at the deadline(Moreno, Alvarez) then you do that very quickly. But teams don't operate like that when it comes to Top 10 prospects in this day and age, definitely not when the prospects are MLB ready. Mayyybe the Mets are reckless/desperate enough that Willson + Robertson + reliever gets you to Alvarez, but their pen hasn't really been a problem so you'd probably need cascading injury/performance collapses. Effross isn't going to get you Moreno - Keegan might be a start??

  17. Speaking of mystery injury - Wilson with a tight hamstring.
  18. Wait 'till we find out that Willie was out of the game because he punched the wall and broke his hand.
  19. If running 360 feet causes a professional athlete to not be able to get to a ball 20 minutes later, I don't know what to say. It's not like he didn't run for it - he missed by a couple inches.
  20. Don't really have a point but does circling the bases prevent Suzuki from catching that bloop? Not suggesting he should have held up but just one of those baseball things.
  21. Well if he was #17 on the prospect list there's got to be a Niagara Falls of WS Titles coming...right...right.
