  1. Gene Wojciechowski, Jon Sciambi and Mark Simon think the Cubs will win the NL Central, although I think Sciambi's vote must be thrown out. He has the Braves winning both the NL East and the WC, followed by the Phils going to the WS. On the AL MVP ballot, 36 of the 45 projected winners are Red Sox or Yankees.
  2. \ Count me in on the Quade fan club. =D> Mike Quade.
  3. To summarize, correlation implies causation all of the time.
  4. Ask and ye shall receive. Yeah, he pitched great after the 1st and he's not been all that good in any spring trainings as of yet to begin with. Maybe he's just a slow starter. Wound up throwing 72 pitches, then went to the pen and threw 15 more. About all we can ask for. There are going to be some bumps along the way for sure. I'm certainly expecting an ugly start or two from Cashner this season, but Quade and Riggins seem like they see his potential and are willing to put up with some growing pains. I think one of the best outcomes of Silva's release (other than simply not having him around) is that there is no veteran "heir apparent" to Cashner's rotation spot if he should falter. Had the Cubs stashed Silva in the 'pen, there would be great temptation to insert him into the rotation as soon as Cashner struggled. With Casey Coleman presenting the lone threat to Cashner's position (from several hundred miles and a roster move away), Cashner should be afforded a much longer leash. That Quade, Riggins and Hendry allowed this situation to materialize suggests that they have considerable confidence in Andrew.
  5. Silva felt the rotation competition was a sham (from Bruce Levine at ESPN.com):
  6. Cashner seems to have settled down nicely. 2 H, 0 R 0 BB 4 K in innings 2-5 (after 5 H, 5 R, 1 BB 1K in the first). In his 3 ST starts, he has given up all his earned runs in the first inning. Maybe its just nerves.
  7. Tough 1st so far for Cashner. 1 out 3 hits (1B, 2B and a HR), 4 runs and a missed catch error on Cashner.
  8. Great, now Silva's probably going to kneecap him. Seriously, though, I'm liking Quade more and more each day. Or just kill him:
  9. I didn't think this deserved it's own thread, but another Red's pitcher may be out a while. Bronson Arroyo has mononucleosis. He claims he won't miss any of his starts. We'll see.
  10. By that criterium, would not all empirical science be conjecture? If so, I think we simply use the word "conjecture" differently. In any case, I digress. I blame the shifting winds off the lake.
  11. I don't mean to go off topic, but just because general relativity and quantum field theory have yet to be unified doesn't mean that the the universal law of gravitation is suddenly a "conjecture" that is less "valid" than the notion home-field advantage. Back on topic, I agree with you regarding the question of whether WL is a normal distribution, though.
  12. Per Carrie Muskat: No further starts for Cash.
  13. Remember when Conor Jackson held promise? Valley Fever is a bitch...
  14. [expletive] you, Oakland.
  15. Sadly, that was one of Silva's best innings. Throughout the spring, though, it seems like he's usually imploded in the 2nd or 3rd inning. The worst (best?) is yet to come.
  16. 3 hitters, 2 hits, 1 run. Keep sucking Carlos!
  17. A's: Crisp 8 Sweeney 9 Willingham 7 Matsui DH (Gio Gonzalez) Suzuki 2 Ellis 4 Jackson 3 Pennington 6 Sogard 5 Cubs: Johnson 9 Castro 6 Baker 4 Ramirez 5 Soto 2 Soriano 7 Colvin 3 Perez 8 Silva 1 Go Hitters.
  18. A Carlos Silva/Koyie Hill battery appeared 5 times last season. Over/under?
  19. Q: How does a team collect 22 hits, 13 runs and lose? A: By allowing Carlos Silva to pitch.
  20. Welington Castillo gets [expletive] done.
  21. Those 11 H and 1 BB bring Silva's ST WHIP to 2.73, which would be a pretty nice ERA. Edit: W. Castillo with another hit.
  22. Against Silva, more batters have homered (4) this spring than have struck out (3). And 1 of those Ks was a pitcher.
  23. Colvin 9 Castro 6 Byrd 8 Ramirez 5 Pena 3 Soto 2 Soriano 7 DeWitt DH Barney 4 I'd swap Colvin for Fukudome and place DeWitt at 2B, otherwise that 1-8 is pretty decent. Cincy's lineup: Stubbs 8 Phillips 4 Votto 3 Rolen 5 Bruce 9 Gomes 7 Hanigan 2 Janish 6 LeCure 1
