  1. There's talk of Lance Lynn, PJ Walters or Adam Ottavino filling in.

  4. You are a one man A/V club. And I mean that in a good way. Now we just need to get Quade a cat to stroke in the dugout...
  5. Can somebody photoshop Ernst Blofeld (as portrayed by Donald Pleasence) into a Cubs hat?

  8. Augie looks like he's wearing a child's glove. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mNXODoIQV2Y/TV2TJ_YJuGI/AAAAAAAAAJY/WaQrx_DIW4A/s400/Augie+O+inspects+BOS+e.jpg For comparison:
  9. I think he remains in STL, which I can live with provided he extracts a massive annual salary from the Cards for many, many years. If he signs with them for less than A-Rod money, I'm going to be disappointed.
  10. I hope not. I want him the hell out of the NLC (with the obvious exception of the Cubs).
  11. All accounts I've read state the Cards' willingness to go 9-10 years, but at $19-21 million AAV. They wouldn't give that AAV to a 47 year old. I think the Cards are just some combination of delusional/cheap. Maybe they think that having NY/BOS out of the potential mix of suitors depresses his value. Maybe they think Albert loves STL soooooooo much that he will essentially pay them $8-10 million a season to play there. Clearly, they are wrong. I'm beginning to believe that this was just Contract Negotiations Dinner Theatre, and DeWitt and Co. were merely offering enough to save face, knowing they couldn't afford to meet his demands. Much of the STL fanbase has been gulping down the "Its a Privelege to Wear the Birds on the Bat" kool-aid for years now. Those folks are ready and willing to blame Pujols for leaving this deal on the table.
  12. Considering that this is also the Fielder thread, yeah, it's gonna get out of hand.
  13. Christ that's awful news.
  14. Droppin' knowledge. I'm making it to Opening Day so just so I can be there for Kerry Wood's comeback debut. The crowd reaction when Kerry came out to close games in 2008 was amazing. I can only imagine what it will sound like this year.
  15. It doesn't seem like they were interested in making serious offers. Which is weird. Especially considering the the state of their financial affairs at the close of the 2011 season. My recollection is that Carpenter has a $15 million option and Molina a $7 million option. Unless I'm mistaken, those would have to be picked up prior to FA negotiations. One would think it would behoove the cards to have a more concrete understanding of their budget at that point; a position they could have afforded themselves by locking up Pujols. Worst case scenario (by which I mean best) is that they must decline the options of Carpenter and Molina in order to command the requisite funds to compete with other offers for Pujols, and ultimately they lose out on all three. Unlikely though that may be, they're not making matters easy for themselves.
  16. These 11th-hour overtures have me nervous. I've allowed myself to get far too excited by the prospect of a Pujols-less Cardinals roster. Mere months ago, I considered his life-long Cardinalhood a foregone conclusion. Now, I feel as though Pujols' re-signing for anything less than a franchise crippling sum will be a disappointment.
  17. Whether or not he eventually re-signs with them in the offseason, I'm hoping for protracted periods of handwringing and near-toxic bitterness over the course of the next season. I'm in this for the schadenfreude.
  18. Grooming him for a stopgap role seems like a lousy reason to avoid acquiring a bullpen arm. We have Blake DeWitt under team control through 2014, and while he isn't an outstanding option, he's better than Tony Thomas. LeMahieu or Lake may even be able to fill the position by then.
  19. The MLBPA responds to La Russa's allegations: Perhaps next La Russa can blame the Tides Foundation? Maybe Soros? That aside, the implication from La Russa is that Pujols' camp is being unreasonable in their demands, and Albert is not that kind of guy, so someone (MLBPA) must be coercing him. If the reality, as it appears to be, is that Pujols' team is negotiating absent of explicit, external pressure, does not the substance of La Russa's gripe become "Pujols is asking for too much"? This season could be an interesting one to watch in St. Louis. Never underestimate TLR's ability to hold a grudge.
  20. I agree. I felt the same way in 2007-2008 Re: Soriano's contract. If we had won the WS, all was forgiven.
  21. Brownlie and his outlaw curve. The heir apparent to Jason Bere's fosh ball.
  22. I was hoping no more than 7 a year. I guess it's not horrible. I just hate giving three-year contracts to relievers. Provided the deal is in fact between $18-23 million over three years, that's decent. If it is anywhere above that, I guess that's what we've come to expect from Hendry vis a vis bullpen contracts. I'll reserve judgement until I see what other items (NTC, performance based incentives, etc.) are included.

  24. Are centaurs lousy sports journalists? Am I missing something?
  25. You're forgetting Russell. I saw this last night and started preparing to be angry about Samardzija making the team. But if Guzman isn't ready, I can't muster up a lot of rage over Samardzija v. Coleman v. Caridad v. Maine. I knew I'd forget someone. I guess Russell is "etc."
