  1. Ok. So in other words, replace Olney's "Not a good sign" with "Not really a sign of anything".
  2. Per Buster Olney: "One evaluator who saw Marcum's start on Thursday clocked his fastball at 86 mph. Not a good sign. Marcum has never been a power pitcher, but what concerns evaluators who have seen him this spring, beyond the velocity, is the quality of his fastball. " Those of you who know Marcum's repertoire better than myself, how hard does he typically throw when healthy?
  3. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110317&content_id=16998262&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb Another setback for the Milwaukee rotation.
  4. "La Russa preaches selective aggressiveness -- lay off the bad pitches and swing at the good ones." This is the kind of sage instruction that Theriot just couldn't have received anywhere else.
  5. That sounds very encouraging with respect to Cashner. It looks like the organization is intent upon him starting. Personally, I don't really mind if he continues to stretch out at AAA, as long as he's not rotting in the 'pen. Regarding Koyie vs. Castillo, its very annoying that Hill will probably get the job, but its hardly a catastrophe.

  7. I would guess that being pushed to 2B and traded to LA in the same season did him in. However, I do think that he is pandering the meatball fans as well. Why would he be upset about being traded from the team that ruined his plate approach, has awful relief pitching and suffers from an organization-wide apathy towards winning? Did I miss anything? You haven't missed anything. I am speculating about why he has suddenly become the anti-cub. If I had to guess, I would think that he played it off as "the good teammate" when he was pushed to 2B for a rookie then got pissed when he was traded away. Not saying that I agree with him or anything, I'm glad he's gone quite frankly. Sorry, I didn't intend to argue your post. I really just find Theriot's attitude toward the Cubs very puzzling. He's a thoroughly mediocre middle IFer who was given an opportunity to play every day and hit near the top of the order (for whatever reason) on 2 division winning teams. There's a decent chance he spends his entire career as a utility/bench player were it not for the Cubs desperation to replace Izturiz. I don't expect him to sing the org.'s praises; its just odd that he consistently goes out of his way to trash them. Oh well. At least he's gone.

  9. Other than giving him several (largely undeserved) seasons to establish himself as a full-time SS at the Major League level, what did the Cubs org. do to piss off Ryan Theriot? Or is he really just that interested in pandering to STL media? Maybe someday he'll be able to pick up the pieces and post a .700+ OPS again.
  10. This is beautiful. Every time I turn around, there's another Hawks goal in the net.
  11. Just realized that Castro has only struck out 3 times in 30 ABs. He has as many K as he does HR.
  12. 2 perfect innings for silva.
  13. That may be the case, however the book's authors make the further claim that their perspective undermines that of "Moneyball". One needn't read their book (much less even draw up a simple Venn diagram) to identify this argument as specious.
  14. The point that the people who can think critically were making is that the premise and central thesis of the book is completely stupid, and completely deserves to be mocked and ridiculed. Unless you've read it, or at a minimum seen more than just one review of it, then you don't know what the premise and central thesis of the book is. The synopsis of the book offered in the original post is taken from the official website for the book. The authors' thesis--as stated in their synopsis--is a refutation of an argument they don't understand employing a series of non-sequiturs as evidence. That they composed an entire book without realizing this is laughable, thus people here are laughing at them. And we're not alone in doing so.
  15. To the Sixers, no less. Pull it together and dispatch the Hawks, Bulls.
  16. Very nice outing from Demp. Nice to see Pena and Soto hitting.
  17. The working title was "Modern Metrics of Baseball Player Performance Do Not Account for the Erratic Flight Patterns of Pigeons and Are Therefore Useless".
  18. Koyie finally got on base (BB), and then was thrown out trying to steal?
  19. Garza claims he has tried to throw only fastballs and changeups in his first 3 starts. That he is not using his full repertoire may explain some of his issues thus far (although not his control problems).
  20. My understanding (based upon details offered by the MLB.com broadcast) is that several of the hits were weak flares/broken bat hits.
  21. Z's scoreless streak ends at 6 IP. Thus far today, 3 IP, 5 H (all singles), 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Edit: Final line.
  22. Lineups: Cubs: Perez 8 Castro 6 Colvin 7 Soto 2 Baker 5 Fukudome 9 DeWitt 4 Moore 3 Z 1 Rockies: Taveras 8 Blackmon 9 Gonzalez 7 Tulowitzki 6 Helton 3 Lopez 4 Pagnozzi 2 Field 5 De La Rosa 1

  24. Who called a Scott Moore grand slam? Vitters with an RBI double, as well. Edit: and Wood works 1-2-3 with 2 K. He's looked very sharp since his first outing (although he's been doing it against the JV squad.) Odd note: at present, both teams are playing shortstops named Darwin.
  25. He got a hit and an RBI. Yay! On a fly ball, no less. Huzzah!
