    On the plus side, if this means Quade can insert Grabow in the third inning and pitch him until he dies, I think it's a net win.

    Ok. Russell is halfway through his pitch allotment after 1 inning. At least we get to lose AND decimate our bullpen. Was there really no one in the system who could absorb 100 pitches and a loss?

    Perhaps this is a non-sequitur, but thus far Prince has been remarkably durable/consistent by comparison to those listed above. In Fielder's first 5 full seasons, he's appeared in no fewer than 157 games, playing all 162 in 2009. Of the guys listed, only 3 (Canseco at ages 21-23, Hrbek at age 25 and Davis at ages 25 and 28) ever appeared in 157+ games in any of their first 5 full seasons (6 total out of 45 seasons), and none in more than 159 games. I merely picked guys off his Baseball-Ref comps. Nothing more than that. I really don't have a preference either way. However I would advise the Cubs not to go for more than 5 years. If he wants 6 or 7 only do it for a lower annual pay, or at the very least make year 6 or 7 a vesting option based on performances in years 5 and 6, respectively. I'd much rather give him 125 mil over 5 years than 160 mil over 8. I assumed as much. I just find it interesting how few games he's missed given his physical make-up. I am also ambivalent towards a Fielder signing.

    Considering the uneventful brevity of O'Neal's mound visit, I'm going to try to be optimistic and hope he's not seriously injured and they were simply lifting him at the first hint of trouble. The organization has repeatedly stated Cashner's long term importance to the team. Here's hoping their merely being cautious.

    63 pitches, 1 R on 2 hits 0 BB and 2 K through 5 IP. Cash has greatly exceeded even my rosy expectations. A win would just be gravy at this point. I'm pretty thrilled.

    Bloomquist, SS Johnson, 2B Upton, RF Branyan, 1B Young, CF Montero, C Roberts, 3B Parra, LF Saunders, P vs. Baker, 2B Castro, SS Byrd, CF Ramirez, 3B Soto, C Pena, 1B Soriano, LF Fukudome, RF Wells, P Byrd's splits vs. lefties last year were excellent (.357/.390/.526/.916 vs .267/.328/.389/.717). One might argue this makes his presence near the top of the lineup more excusable, although for his career he has only a marginal platoon split (.287/.344/.450/.793 vs .278 /.339/.410/.750). Move Ramirez through Soriano up a slot and slide Byrd into the 7 spot and this isn't a bad lineup. Oh well. I think the Cubs win this one anyway.

    Some other positives are Starlin and Castro, his late inning error notwithstanding. Garza pitched very well too, despite Pittsburgh's managing to bloop and/or roll every god damn ball-in-play to a spot where a cub was not. One final gripe about batting order: How many times can anyone remember a guy posting 7 TB with 1 R and no RBI? Batting Starlin leadoff is not necessarily a bad idea, but with no one behind him, (and the 8 and pitcher's spots ahead of him) he is essentially in an offensive no-man's-land.

    Byrd would be a great 7 hole hitter. The problems with him in the 3 hole are (among others) a lack of selectivity (3.6 P/PA over the past 3 years, below the team average) and a propensity to make ground ball outs (1.14 GO/AO over the same period). Compare those numbers to Aramis over the same stretch of years and you have 3.9 and 0.59, respectively. Both flaws of Byrd's approach were evident today.

    I'm sure this has been restated myriad ways throughout this thread, but it would be nice to have a couple of decent hitters behind Castro rather than Barney and Byrd.

    Barney starting didn't bother me nearly as much when he was hitting 8th. Oh well. Win anyway, Cubs.

    Cards getting hammered. 9-3 Friars in the 6th. Ryan Theriot is on pace for 162 errors this season, although I'm sure that last one was also Jon Jay's fault, somehow.
