  1. ...And the charges agains Mercedes have been thrown out.
  2. Maybe they feel his plate discipline is unlikely to improve? Still, considering his age and outstanding hit-tool (not to mention improving defense) he's valuable even if he never really learns to walk.
  3. We can disagree as to whether or not the DH rule is a bad one, but it undoubtedly has altered how AL teams are put together and managed. That said, if the AL isn't gonna drop the DH (and they aren't, for a variety of reasons) I acknowledge that it is dumb on the part of the NL to put themselves at a perennial disadvantage. It's a stupid idea that should have never become a rule, but 39 years in, I'm willing to capitulate in the name of competitiveness.
  4. Individual W/L is a monumentally dumb stat, while the save the has non-sensically altered the make up and utilization of major league rosters (not to mention the marketplace for relief pitchers) in a manner topped only by the DH rule. And for the tie-breaker, the save is a monumentally dumb stat, as well: A pitcher is awarded a save if he satisfies the following 4 criteria: 1. He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his team; 2. He is not the winning pitcher; 3. He is credited with at least ⅓ of an inning pitched; and 4. He satisfies one of the following conditions: 4a. He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning 4b. He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, at bat or on deck 4c. He pitches for at least three innings And 4c gives us gems like this one.
  5. So maybe don't pitch to Quentin? Christ.
  6. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Alfonso Soriano show.
  7. Love it. Only wish it could be implemented sooner.
  8. Weren't a fan of FJM? Yeah, absolutely. Just being facetious.
  9. An anti-SABR blog post that offers as a central point of its "thesis" the Cubs' 2003 NLCS game six collapse? Are you just scouring the internet for stuff that makes you unhappy?
  10. Barney?! Time to hang 'em up, Suppan.
  11. When I saw the ball go, I just assumed Soriano would miss a bag or something and be called out. I can't believe we actually scored a run.
  12. Points for succinctness, Dex.
  13. I'm sure you're correct. I can't help wondering if at any point in his career a coach or manager has taken Hill aside and told him, "There's no point in being a switch hitter if you can't hit for [expletive] from either side of the plate. Stop making an ass out of yourself."
  14. Not too upset about this, really. Consider the Cubs' available position players: Koyie Hill Blake Lalli Jeff Baker Darwin Barney Adrian Cardenas Starlin Castro Bryan LaHair Ian Stewart Tony Campana David DeJesus Reed Johnson Joe Mather Alfonso Soriano I've always felt Castro belonged in the two spot, and with that being the case, who out of the motley cast of remaining losers do you put behind him? Stewart was scratched tonight and LaHair is in the midst of a brutal 2 week slump. This roster presently sucks.
  15. My favorite thing about Koyie Hill is that he's a "switch hitter". Career .567 OPS as a lefty, vs. a .590 as a righty. Quick!! Warm up the righty! We've gotta turn Koyie Hill around!! Why must you defile both batter's boxes with your shittiness, Koyie Hill? Why?
  16. Errors, sure, but what makes you think those people value walks?
  17. Any team stupid enough to release and then re-sign Koyie Hill deserves never to win again.
  18. Koyie Hill is, was and always will be hot garbage.
  19. Shark time. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uN3w1paMiYQ/TdqEbxl1gsI/AAAAAAAAANM/74teA6j7-tg/s1600/Roger+Bernadina+Vs+Brewers.jpg (Bad photoshop credit to some weirdo who really likes Roger Bernandina.)
  20. I also like how this nickname can be modified (à la Lionel Hutz) to refer to his prodigious HR and strikeout rates: In Play? No! Out.
  21. While their positioning--both defensively and in the batting order--may be questionable, I can certainly see why Sveum wants their bats in line-up tonight. Career splits vs. LHP: Johnson: .310/.367/.462 Baker: .306/.358/.520 Wolf has been knocked around early this season. To RHB in particular, he has as many XBH allowed (14) as strikeouts. I'm cautiously optimistic. Edit: Just for fun, Castro vs. LHP: .359/.400/.508
  22. Pujols sucking makes Cardinals fans feel better, so I can't enjoy it. This. Having left the cards, I was hoping Pujols would hit 88 HR a year until he was 50. Now I have to hear all my old acquaintances from STL talk about how glad they are they "got rid of his greedy ass". This just feeds every awful meatball aspect of the STL fan base. Pujols goes? No biggie. Carp goes down? We'll replace his production with Lance Lynn. Copacetic.
