  1. Joe Nelson (RHP) is reportedly interested in joining the Cubs as a late inning reliever (says Trib's Mark Gonzalez). Not really sure how Nelson's interest matters, but whatever. Had a very good season with Florida in '08. Interestingly, Nelson is better vs. LH than RH (.215 BAA vs. .237 for career). Strikes out about 1 per inning but also walks more than 4.5 per 9.
  2. I wouldn't put too much stock in him hitting well at Wrigley historically. Much like Jeff Blauser, that was against Cub pitchers. the cubs pitching staff has been good. Yeah, I mean I wasn't really putting much stock into that, just interesting info. Like the fact he was really good in a PH role last year as well.
  3. Big fan of this signing, time for some competition for Big HoffP. Tracy has murdered the Cubs in his career (1.057 OPS in 84 AB's, highest vs any NL team) and hit well at Wrigley in limited AB's.
  4. I am pretty happy with the Nady signing; I would much rather spend ~$4M on a very decent platoon player than an average middle reliever. Liking the fact that he has shown the ability to hit with some power consistently and also to play on a consistent basis if needed. There were stretches in '08 when Nady was on an absolute tear w/Pit. If he gets hot you can play him in RF over Fuk or give Sori/Lee a day off. And when Nady gets hot, he's adding the extra power to the lineup that Reed wouldn't be able to provide. I feel like Nady's that short, powerful, Jake Fox type who can hit the ball out on a wind blowing in day. Nady did have an abnormally high OBP in '08 w/Pit (.383), so hopefully he can get it up a bit from his .335 career AVG. But I don't worry about that as much with a platoon player if they can hit for power. Reed's good seasons were pretty dependent on his OBP. Not too worried about the surgery either.
  5. I don't think most around here actually mean that almost ANYONE could have done better than JH, but rather that there are/will be better options available come next year and there are others that could have done more with what JH has had available to him the past however many years.
  6. I'd prefer Cameron at the contract he received. Trib said Cubs weren't close to offering Cameron the $$ he received, so I'm sure Byrd would be a fair amount cheaper.
  7. No way Byrd gets that kinda money. 3/20ish Im thinking
  8. Seriously? You have got to be kidding. You propose trading Ramirez, Bradley, Cashner, and Jackson for Miguel Cabrera and you don't understand why that's a horrible deal? As for Cashner and Jay Jackson, I'm still not convinced Cashner is as valuable as Castro or Vitters. I get the feeling that Cashner is a Samardizja type of pitcher. You probably get that feeling without ever seeing him pitch.
  9. 8:00 am alarm -- Aaron Miles has been traded...woke me up real quick Pretty happy with the trade. Without fact-checking, it's extremely hard for me to remember a worse season by a Cubs player since I have been following the team ('88)
  10. This can't be what you meant. Let me clarify: When the Cubs got DeRosa from Texas he was 32, coming off 97/108 OPS+ seasons. Byrd is going to be 32 coming from Texas, with OPS+ seasons of 112/121/106. The big difference (other than position) are Byrd's splits. If there really is someting to that, then it may be a problem. Just meant the signing would remind me of the DeRosa one at the time and Byrd seems better now than DeRosa then. Another big difference may be that DeRosa turned into a real solid OB guy here.
  11. I wouldn't mind Byrd, he seems like a better DeRosa
  12. I'd go so far as to predict that Bradley will be traded within a week of the WS ending, and quite possibly the next day (a la the Renteria trade in 2007). Unlike a lot of baseball deals, this one will not take long to consummate IMO. Well, if he's going to go I'd rather it not take all offseason so I guess I would count that as a good thing. That and only if the Cubs have to eat as little or none of the contract as possible, I would consider a good thing. I don't understand why people still think this is a possibility.
  13. 113/180 Glad I didn't get 150+, it makes me feel a lot bettter about myself.
  14. Well, compared to a Taj Gibson, who doesn't do anything particularly well and isn't expected to amount to much, Blair is a fantastic rebounder, which is a skill that translates very well to the pros. Taj Gibson will be a fine rebounder in the NBA, especially with good coaching. He averaged 7.8 & 9 in last 2 years @ USC. The Bulls needed a big body under the basket (Noah, Gray, ?) and Blair doesn't fit that bill. Been there done that before (Elton Brand, Lonny Baxter, Marcus Fizer, Sweets). I just think being big is about more than rebounding. Defense is huge in the playoffs as is banging around down low.
  15. I just don't get the obsession with Dejuan Blair
  16. My thoughts are if Hendry pulled this off and didnt get fired, Id give up. If Hendry trades Bradley for Linebrink, I think I might make a trek up to Chicago and punch Hendry in the face. Trading a productive OF fo a crappy middle reliever is not how you make good teams. Not to mention the Cubs have more then enough arms in thesystem to do what Linebrink does, without the contract issues. It doesn't really matter, the Sox are not going to trade for Milton.
  17. Yeah, thought he was pretty bad. On that play where Raburn threw out Twins guy at home, Carey said "Base hit left field....caught and the throw" It was weird
  18. I don't think Gibson was a great pick. I loved the JJ pick, though. I don't expect Deng to average 18-19. If he can give me 16-17 and 8 on a regular basis, I'd be fine with that. Like I said, I think they're probably going to be about the same as they were last year. Who were the Bulls uppossed to take at #26?? That's real low Gibson is 6'10 with like a 7'2 wingspan. That can be extremely valuable in the NBA
  19. I saw a bunch of the Bulls/Jazz game today in London on tv. Rose, Thomas and Salmons didn't play. They are gonna be better even without Gordon. Taj Gibson and James Johnson were great picks and are gonna contribute right away. I think Johnson could be a semi-star in a few years, Danny Granger-ish. Gibson is a huge body and fundamentally sound...kinda like Noah but more athletic. Noah is gonna have a real good year I think. Deng should be healthy and around 18-19 ppg. Hinrich is real solid. And they have Brad Miller & Jannero Pargo. That's a good 10 guys, real deep.
  20. You watched the game??
  21. Laughable
  22. Bradley has not had a great season, that's really all that can be said.
  23. I wouldn't be opposed to Grabow if only to satisfy the "must have a veteran presence in the pen" doctrine and guarantee you have at least one lefty therefore reducing the likelihood of them freaking out in March and demanding to get a lefty. I see that, I just hate that we're back to Dusty-proofing thhe team. To be fair, there are a whole bunch of GMs that like veterans in their bullpen not just JH. I certainly wouldn't want too much inexperience in my pen if I were the GM (especially for this club).
  24. I mean, if Hendry is going to give money to relievers (hopefully 2 years/$5 mill) at least it's better that he give it to someone who has actually pitched well for us and at Wrigley.
