  1. Chelsea looked terrible today. I know they were on the road but at no point in the game did they control the action for any extended period of time. Poor defense (Courtois had no chance on any of the three goals) and very little going forward. At least in the Liverpool game they controlled the last 30ish minutes (after scoring the goal). They just had nothing today.
  2. Is it the postseason yet? Cubs are 9-9 against the Cardinals this year and while I know it doesn't mean a whole lot, it would be much better win the season series against them. CUBS are 98-56 when they play a baseball game CUBS are 13-9 in September CUBS are 9-9 against the Cardinals CUBS are 56-24 at home CUBS are 23-7 when Lester starts Go CUBS !!
  3. Went on a stadium tour at White Hart Lane and they had the following picture of Klinsmann getting barrelled over by some goalie while he was with Spurs. Thought some here would enjoy it. Spoilered for size.
  4. You (or anyone else) get a chance to watch yesterday? How was CCV? Good day for yanks abroad across the board, sounds like: http://www.noshortcorners.com/2016/09/a-fab-day.html I did not. Was in the air during the game.
  5. The Rangers are currently 13 games better than their pythag record. If the Cubs were 13 games better than their pythag (which would be a 19 game swing), they'd be 115-36.
  6. If the Giants hang on, we'll have a three way tie for the wild card spots.
  7. To me it still is to some extent. That has a lot to do with my being just 21 and fresh out of college at the time. This team is obviously the new standard. From day one they've been [expletive] destroying everyone. Yep. Spent 1 day not in first place (either sole possession or tied) and sole possession of first place from the 7th game on.
  8. I'd say the chances of 2 Cueto starts in the NLDS are high, not low. Unless there's a tiebreaker, Bum pitches the WC game and Cueto goes Game 1 and 5. Unless you mean the Cubs will win in 3 or 4 and then I'll allow it.
  9. The Spurs game was pretty great today - not necessarily the result (though I was happy with a win) but just getting to experience that atmosphere. I knew it would be different but getting to experience the difference between American sports (MLB/NFL/NBA, can't speak for MLS) firsthand was interesting. Fans just starting chants out of nowhere without needing to be prompted by some jumbotron to stand and cheer and make noise. Getting to see the whole stadium be extra loud while doing the "He's one of our own" and "Oh when the Spurs" chants after Kane scored was awesome. We were also on the south end of the stadium and only a couple sections away from the Sunderland fans and those guys were all standing and chanting for most of the game as well. Just awesome.
  10. Ideal scenario: Cubs sweep the Giants and I'm in attendance for Game 3.
  11. If the choices are Giants, Cards, Dodgers or Mets...my choice would be the Cards because they're the worst team on that list by a pretty comfortable margin. It'll be fun to watch them kick the ball all over the field in a playoff game. Someone mentioned it here earlier but the only worry about the Cards is Matheny doing something dumb and starting Wainwright in the WC game because of veteran horsefeathers and then getting Martinez to start Game 1. I feel like the Giants and Mets, assuming they don't go down to the last day, would be weakened more by having to start Thor and Bumgarner in the WC game. But even then, I think I'd rather have the Giants miss out completely because even if Bum starts the WC game, you still get Cueto in Games 1 and 5 with Bumgarner in 3. Those two guys only start 3 games regardless in a DS (Bum in 1 and 5, Cueto in 3 if Bum can't pitch the WC game). With the Cards, it's maybe Martinez in 1 and 5 if Matheny is dumb. Mets definitely get hurt the most by the WC game, though.
  12. Disappointing result last night but experiencing Wembley and all the chanting and singing was pretty awesome. We were 12 rows up and about even with one of the 18 yard boxes. Definitely something I'll remember forever even if the final score wasn't what I had hoped. White Hart Lane should be just as good on Sunday with hopefully a better result.
  13. If anything, it would have to be named after BacktoBanks. Shoot it wasn't SweetSwingingBilly who called Jim Hendry's office to tell him to make a specific trade? The one who then passed away a little while later? That was SweetSwingingBilly. I was suggesting B2B for all the ridiculous 3 and 4 team trades he'd come up with. Either one would be good though.
  14. If anything, it would have to be named after BacktoBanks.

  16. Greetings from beautiful Inverness, Scotland! Go CUBS !!
  17. This is terrible news. I think we all feared something like this when Fred disappeared a couple months ago but we all hoped he'd recover and be back. Like some others, I met Fred a few times at some crappy truck stop in Sacramento before he was nice enough to let myself and CT stay at his place during the 2007 NLDS, and picked both of us up from the airport. He was always very nice and friendly, as well as optimistic about the Cubs. The Game Threads haven't been and won't be the same without him.
  18. I thought it was dumb to shut him down completely like they did, as opposed to moving him to the bullpen a month before the shutdown to limit his innings (and then having him in the bullpen for the playoffs) or limiting his innings earlier in the season so that he would be available in October. Or simply skipping some starts in June/July/August. Limiting his workload was the right call, just seems they could have planned it better. Completely shutting down your best pitcher going into the playoffs in hopes that he might be available if you happen to make the playoffs again in the future seems like a move that's very rarely ever going to pan out in your favor. This. See what Toronto is doing to manage Aaron Sanchez this year as a good example of what I'd have done with Strasburg that year. Yep. The idea of limiting his innings was fine. It was how they went about doing it that was poor.
  19. I sent SSR a PM telling him that if tree hasn't started the next thread by Sunday morning, that he should go ahead and do it. Hopefully one of them shows up and starts it.
  20. Hasn't been on since yesterday morning. At this point, I'd say whoever wants to start it can go ahead and do it.
  21. So I'm going to assume that Guatemala and St Vincent played without goalies today?
  22. So the Mets are probably going to get a WC spot, or at least they should. They're 1.5 behind SF and 1 behind St. Louis but here's their remaining schedule: 1 @ Cincy 3 @ Atlanta 3 @ Washington 3 vs. Minnesota 3 vs. Atlanta 4 vs. Philly 3 @ Miami 3 @ Philly St. Louis and SF have more games against each other than the Mets do against teams over .500. Giants also get 6 against LA while the Cards play the Cubs 6 times.
  23. There are only three other parks where the Cubs could possibly have lost more games at than Miller in that time frame so it shouldn't be too surprising. None of the other three teams in the division has had any sort of extended success in that time.
  24. They'd still be favored to win the division. Neither the Cardinals or Pirates look like they are getting to the 89 wins the Cubs already have. Would factoring in the 6 wins they'd get from beating the Cubs change that at all or did you already take that into account?
  25. Rougned Odor currently has 30 HRs and only 14 walks. He's currently the only player in MLB history with at least a 2-1 HR:BB with at least 10 BBs. If it's dropped to 5 BBs, he's still one of only 3.
