  1. And if Colvin becomes a very good, Mark Kotsay type player, who produces for a long time, are you still going to call it a "huge risk", even if the players (some of whom some Cubs fans wanted) never developed into a star? The draft will always be a "Crapshoot" and it doesn't matter the rd. Albert Pujols lasted till the 13th rd. Oswalt and Piazza went further down in the draft, whereas we've seen players like Brien Taylor, Todd Van Poopell, Darren Dreifort become spectualr busts. So, "huge risk" or not, I like the pick, and I fully expect him to win over just about every body here, in the last few yrs.
  2. That would come to 7/105. Hendry better BACK AWAY IN A HURRY at that cost. No way is Soriano going to be worth that.
  3. Not that I feel he has any better info than the dustbunnies living under my bed, but I'd be happy with that bid regardless of if we win or lose the rights to talk to Mats. So do I. I mean if Ichiro (who at the time is more popular in Japan then Matsuazaka is now) only had a $11 million posting fee, what makes Matsuazaka worth almost $40 mill in posting fees? IMO, I highly doubt that Matsuazaka is going to be worth the fees the Boston is willing to give for him.
  4. Wow. That's pretty ridiculous. Matt Murton<<<< And Carlos pojects as a DH. Murton is NOT a 4th OF. He can hit WELL enough, and get on WELL ENOUGH to warrant being a LF. Besides...Murton is a bargain at his current contract, whereas Carlos Lee is more likely going to be a burden on some team salary. No question....Murton IS BETTER then Lee.
  5. Sounds like I've got DH in my future then - do I have to hit or just gain weight? You could HIT the WEIGHTS. 8)
  6. You enjoy seeing people humiliated? Let me preface this response, with the fact that I love watching the show "Punk'd". Depends on the person/organization, yes, I do enjoy seeing people/organization get humilated. Especially an unoffical ESPN sponsored team like the Yankees or the Red Sox. It's the nature of the beast, if you are going to be a "reporter." Besides, once in awhile, a little egg in the face, does help keep a reporters ego in check.
  7. I know it's HIGHLY unlikely, with all the "sources" saying the same thing, but wouldn't it be a HUGE EGG in the faces of the likes of Ostrede/Heyman/Gammons, if Boston is not the winning bid? Again, I know it's unlikely, but, I would laugh my booty off.
  8. Yeah, thats the silver lining in this. I wouldnt have wanted the Cubs to bid in the nieghborhood of 45 mil, but at least the Yankees didnt get him. You're right, "The Evil Empire" didn't get Matsuzaka, but "The Borg" will. But hey, I kinda hoping he pulls a Beckett, and bombs his first yr in Boston.
  9. Ture, but players don't necessarily compare their stats to comparable players (ie Soriano to Beltran), they usually compare their stats with another highly soughtafter FA (ie Soriano/Lee to Ramirez). My guess is...you can throw out Soriano getting $100 million now, and I think you will see teams play one player off the other. I believe both Soriano and Lee will end up with similar contracts as Ramirez.
  10. Is it me, or do anybody here believe that Sorian and Carlos Lee both did a "disgruntled sigh" with a annoyed "aww....crap" when they heard Aramis signed, with some people are calling a "hometown contract?" I think Soriano and Lee can now expected to get offers around what ARamis got, and not what Beltran go (in Soriano's case). Not that it matters, but if there was a "legitimate offer of $100 million" made by the Angels, and ARam took less money to stay with the Cubs (and leaving $27 mill on the table, "alledgely) I wonder what the MLBPA is thinking right now?
  11. Nope. The last game of the losing streak was a 4-0 loss to the D'Backs and I believe it was a t Wrigley. The series you are prolly thinking about was the weekend (May 11-13) before the 12 gamer, when Mueller got his injury That was also the same month the Cubs kicked the holy dog-doody out of the Dodgers, 20-1.
  12. If you're looking for hope, don't look to the Cubs. Look somewhere else. Like Truffle's sig.
  13. I'm going to assume this is a pun. If I'm right, you are up WAY too late. MPrior/Ron what the heck are you talking about?
  14. Link. I'd much rather have Igawa if the winning bid was actually 38-45 million. I can't fathom paying up to 95 million for 5 years of one player. Especially an untested one at that. Agreed.
  15. I disagree. Hendry's butt is on the line (no jokes, plz) and with the rumors that McDonough is willing to let the payroll jump to around $115 mill, it's safe to say that Hendry is going to land a premier FA. Not to mention McD mandate is to "win this yr", the pressure is on Hendry to field a "WINNER." So, yeah...look for one, and who knows, maybe two premier FA/traded players on the Cubs in 2007. You don't nessarily need "talent" to acquire talent. If you're willing to eat an ugly contract, along with the talent, you could "feesibly" acquire ARod (in this case) for a package of young arms (that includes Marmol and perhaps Gallgaher) if you are willing to take back Jaret Wright or Carl Pavano. Stop the inside the box thinking, and look outside for answers. I want nothing to do with Soriano and Zito (perhaps next yr's most spectular pitching/hitting bust), but Drew, you never know. Drew, you neve rknow. Hendry does work well with Boras, and that could carry some weight in negotiations, and should the Cubs offer the CF job, he MIGHT take. So don't rule out JD Drew, just. Just remember, he isn't under contract WITH ANYBODY, meaning he is still available, and can be had. I mean, if Vladimir Guerrero was still availabe on January 13, 2004, when the Angels sign him the next day...then who knows.
  16. St.........................ret.....................chi..................ng........., Neuby.
  17. Ummm....no thank you on Adrian Beltre. If the Cubs lose ARam, I would just prefer either A: Put Scott Moore at third, and grow with him, or B: See what it would take to get Bill Hall from Milwaukee. Failing that, Adrian Beltre SHOULD NOT be a consideration for 3rd, UNLESS Seattle eats a good portion of his contract.
  18. Me too. Why? They'll both turn into Chris Carpenter parts II and III if the Cards sign them to long-term deals. I don't know but there deals with Lou Siffer should be ending anytime now.
  19. The Astros are strictly paying Biggio this money so that he can get hit number 3,000 in an Astros uni. Biggio, IMO, will retire after the season. If this is INDEED his last yr, Joe Morgan will have another 2B that is in his stratosphere in HOF.
  20. And Sheffiled ain't the player he once was, and his injury in 2006, willprolly be a precursor to a down yr in 2007. And Floyd would be a better (and atleast chepaer) option for the #4 or #5 in rotation, over guys like Aaron Small, Carl Pavano, and Jaret Wright.
  21. I agree, but ESPN is usually more responsible with its reporting than some random site with a rumor. If it's on ESPN's web site, it is much more credible. ESPN yes, Buster Olney...no.
  22. I believe whichever team offers JD Drew Centerfield as hi position (along with a nice contract) will sign him. I don't see him signing with a team that wants him as a full time RF. He might be willing to play a few games a yr there (say 10 a yr), but he prefers CF, and the Cubs should offer that chance.
  23. First: We have rumors that Texas Rangers have won the bidding for under $21 million. Second: We have rumors the Cubs have won the bidding at around $30 mill, or so. NOW, we have the Red Sox rumored to be the highest bidder at anywhere between $38-45 mill. Can you see why I am skeptical about anything until it becomes official? My guess, this rumored about the Red Sox is just that....a rumor. So, I wouldn't sweat about the Red Sox getting him, just yet.
  24. A quote from that NY Post article: Interesting...so Sheff was ARods only friend on the team. Bring them both in, sign Drew, win the Matsuzaka bid, trade for Heilman and M. Giles! If that happens, nilodnayr, then I would believe in Santa Claus, again. I would love your suggestions to come through, but right now I see the Cubs gett You suggestions Cubs suggestions: ARod Alex Gongalez Sheffield Jose Guillen Matsuzaka Mac Suzuki Heilman Kirk Saarloos M Giles Aaron Miles.
  25. Vance, now we are talking. I would love to get JC Drew in CF.
