Burrell for Benitez? Man to think if we had a crappy arse "closer" (coughsAlfonsecacoughs) we could get Burrell. Armondo Benitez in Philly? Oh boy....THAT should be fun for all parties involved. This guy couldn't pitch in NY, what makes Gillick think he can pitch in Philly? Ryan Dempster wants to know what team you followed last season. The Cubs. But I wasN'T talking about the recent closer. I was talking about the past closer. Aha! :wink: Sorry about the confusion.

I doubt it'll happen shortly. Depends on your interpretation of, "shortly". . Well, when I think of baseball transactions taking place shortly, I'm thinking within a week, or two at the most. Oh, ok. I was thinking "short" as in relative terms of the universe. . Well, I guess anything could happen in the next million years. What aboot the Cubs winning the World Series, eh?

Glavine "choose NY" the first time, simply because he is the Head of MLBPA and if he took less to stay with Atl (his preference, he said so himself) it would set a bad standard for the rest of the union. Glavine took NY simply because he had to make sure players got what the market value them to be. It was about money, but it was also about keeping the market honest for free agents.

Pie for Willis

There is a certain value for Willis, but his value isn't Murton and Pie. Perhaps Murton/Marshall, or Pie/Mateo/Ohman, and those two are clearly stretching his value. I like Willis, but I'm not ready to give up a good package for him. -

Pie for Willis

Willis is just outside of the Top 15 in all of baseball (I'd rank him around 16-18), so he is DEFINATELY NOT WORTH Pie and Murton. -
Buerhle's 2006 vs 2005 was the biggest problem. None of those other guys were particularly special pitchers, so their more or less average seasons were not surprising. Trading Garcia isn't going to kill the Sox. Mediocre pitching is likely to be very overrated this offseason, if a GM can find value in dealing away an expensive mediocre pitcher, he'd be wise to make such a move. No, trading Garcia isn't going to kill the Sox, but on the flip side, getting Sheffield doesn't really make the Sox better. This move reeks of a move being made just to make a move. It's a lateral move AT BEST.

I thought the downfall to the White Sox this past yr, was pitching, and NOT hitting? Why continue to build a Texas Rangers esque offensive lineup, and limit your pitching option? You know the "outslug the opposition" theory does not work. Heck, even the Sox prove that theory. This deal makes no sense for the Sox (and yes, I know the Sox are trying to free up a spot for Brandon McCarthy). I wouldn't be surprise to see this deal take place, tho. Garcia isn't very good, but he's paid like somebody who is (and is going into a free agency year). Their problem wasn't a lack of Freddy Garcias. Their problem was that Buerhle went from very good, to bad, in one season. Buehlre wasn't the only one. Contreras went from very good in the first half, to below average in the second half. Garland was extremely luck (opp hit .290 both halves, but managed a mid 4's era. Vazquez was the only one pitching well in the 2nd half. It was a totaly rotation effort to NOT make the playoffs, with the offense the White Sox had. I know the Yanks are desparate to get rid of Sheff, but since they already know what Vasquez can do in NY, what makes them think Garcia will do any better?

ARod does not want to look like he's giving up in NY, and the Yankees don't want to look like they are willing to give him away. I'd love to see how Hendry would handle this if he were in Cashman's position. Think it would start off with a robust smear campaign? Do you remember the "Sammy Sosa in 2004?" Something similar to that.

That statement is so inaccurate, it is not even funny. He is an above-average pitcher, with charm, but he is NOT one of the best pitchers in the game. There are atleast 10-12 pitchers, I would take over Willis right now. But on the flip side...if the Cubs did acquire Willis, the Cubs could solve two problems with one stone. Adding another ML cstarting caliber pitcher, and help settle the pinch hitting holes the Cubs have. Could you imagine having the option to pinch hit either Willis or Zambrano late in the game, over a guy like Izturis or Cedeno? -

I do too. I mean...Heilman has been "begging" to start again for a few yrs now, and it has fallen on deaf ears. And my guess would be when he becomes a FA (don't know his contract status) he would leave the Mets, for a team that give him the opportunity to start. And right now, I don't see the Mets putting him in the rotation, and the backend of their bullpen is loaded (Sanchez/Feliaino/Mota/Wags). So, I think a deal of Eyre for Heilman could work for both teams, or a deal like Wuertz/Fontenot for Heilman would be another deal the Mets MIGHT do. -

Considering the Mets options at 2b as of right now is Jose Valentin and Anderson Hernandez (I believe), I could see the Mets be interested in Patterson. (Yes, I know, Minaya could also sign his pet Soriano to play 2b, now that he is available). I think the Mets might be more interested in a "legit bullpen arm" like Howry (I wouldn't trade him), or Eyre (I would trade Scott) moreso then Patterson. Reasoning...quality bullpen arms are harder to find then MI who can play. I could see Heilman ending up in Chicago. -
It doesn't ring hollow, and I appreciate the sentiment. Do me a favor, though. When the Cubs are on the verge again, whenever that may be, root against them. I want the full victory experience, and that includes disappointed Cards fans. We now resume our regularly scheduled sulking. There will be more then enough dissapointed Cards fans when the Cubs win, not to include ManEatingTarp.

That's not going to happen. He knows what Pierre is going to want, and he also knows the Cubs have more holes then Natalie Maines (of the Dixie Chicks) have working brain cells. Even Hendry knows he can't afford to give Pierre "Furcal contract", when everybody with a brain cell knows, Pierre ain't worth much more the utlity man money. -
You're right, Wood is no dummy. He KNOWS he isn't going to get a BIG deal, and most likely will only get a incentive laden contract. So if you are going to settle for that kind of contract, why not stick to the ONLY organization. KW loves the city, loves the org (I don't know why, but he does), so like ARam, KW will be back in Chicago.
