  1. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/cubs.asp Bruce Miles' article, mind you: At the very BOTTOM on the article. So, we got one out of town source saying the Cubs have "matched" an offer for JD Drew, and then we have a LOCAL writer saying that Drew isn't even on the "front burner yet? Do we as fans, even have a clue what is ACTUALLY going on?
  2. No, cause they have both Brian McCann and Jared Salty (weird and LONG last name), so ATL have no interests in Barrett. No expand it to include a third third team needing a catcher.......
  3. Lets trade him for Jake Peavy then!!! Sarcasm noted, and a return with (blows raspberry).
  4. IMO, I think Cotts make more sense as a starter for the Cubs then in the pen. There are certain pitchers that are moved to the pen, and have success initally, but struggle, due to the fact that the CAN'T use all of the pitches to stay successful (ie, Derek Lowe, he was a great closer a few yrs back, but suck as closer because he was FORCED to use only 2 of his pitches, and sometimes just 3). I think that is the case with Cotts, And then there are 2 pitch pitchers who are better closers, due to their max effort type mechanics (Rivera/Gordon/Wagner) My opinion is....if Cotts is stretched out as a starter, I could see Cotts becoming a very solid Horatio Ramirez type middle to back end of the rotation starter. But, I do think, getting away from Ozzie, can help relax Cotts, and allow him to get back to his "roots." I like the move.
  5. As mentioned by some in this thread, I think the WEEI report that "the Red Sox is close to signing Drew" is nothing but speculative at this point. I could say "the Cubs are close to signing JD Drew to a 5 yr deal worth $58 mill" and it would be taken just like the WEEI report. My guess is....whoever made this "Report" is just speculating right now. IMO, Boras isn't going to let Drew sign THIS QUICKLY (especially before Thanksgiving), as several mentioned earlier. But it won't surprise me if Drew does sign quickly, due to his religion, and that he might want his contract his contract done quickly, so he can "enjoy Thanksgiving" with his family.
  6. Both Koyie Hill and Ben Howard MIGHT be interesting to follow, but it depends on what they do in Spring Training. Is that the same John Webb that was with the Cubs a few yrs back?
  7. Agreed. Boras/Matsuazaka have NO leverage in the negotions, IMO. If they can't agree then Matsuazaka has to go back to Japan, and Boston get their money back. My guess is....they will compromise ona 5 yr deal, with an option after the 4th.
  8. Brilliant. $4 mil will be cheap by the end of the winter. Why is the Detroit Tigers going to extended Nefti Perez for $5 mill per yr?
  9. If it is truly $51.1 mill for the bidding, then Matsuazaka had better be WORTH every penny. He'd better make the All-Star team, he better win close to 17 games, with an era in the mid to low 3. He better be what people thought Irabu/Nomo were going to be. Right now, I don't know how well he will adjust to the American League and their WONDERFUL offenses.
  10. NESN is their tv station. I honesty don't care. :) You're not the only one.
  11. Come on guys, you have to get inside Hendry's head.....he believes DeRosa is going to be "the new David Ecsktein/Polacido Polanco" that has got to be worth $4 million.....right? Right? I guess, not all GMs need to have a brain to hold down the job.
  12. Can we get a real gm to help Hendry out, PLEASE?
  13. I know some here, like the kid and believe he will take over for Ohman within a yr. But I was reading over at Cubsreporter, and they said that Rapada is "available" in the rule V draft. Any chance this is true, and if so, is he as good as gone?
  14. And if Colvin becomes a very good, Mark Kotsay type player, who produces for a long time, are you still going to call it a "huge risk", even if the players (some of whom some Cubs fans wanted) never developed into a star? The draft will always be a "Crapshoot" and it doesn't matter the rd. Albert Pujols lasted till the 13th rd. Oswalt and Piazza went further down in the draft, whereas we've seen players like Brien Taylor, Todd Van Poopell, Darren Dreifort become spectualr busts. So, "huge risk" or not, I like the pick, and I fully expect him to win over just about every body here, in the last few yrs.
  15. That would come to 7/105. Hendry better BACK AWAY IN A HURRY at that cost. No way is Soriano going to be worth that.
  16. Not that I feel he has any better info than the dustbunnies living under my bed, but I'd be happy with that bid regardless of if we win or lose the rights to talk to Mats. So do I. I mean if Ichiro (who at the time is more popular in Japan then Matsuazaka is now) only had a $11 million posting fee, what makes Matsuazaka worth almost $40 mill in posting fees? IMO, I highly doubt that Matsuazaka is going to be worth the fees the Boston is willing to give for him.
  17. Wow. That's pretty ridiculous. Matt Murton<<<< And Carlos pojects as a DH. Murton is NOT a 4th OF. He can hit WELL enough, and get on WELL ENOUGH to warrant being a LF. Besides...Murton is a bargain at his current contract, whereas Carlos Lee is more likely going to be a burden on some team salary. No question....Murton IS BETTER then Lee.
  18. Sounds like I've got DH in my future then - do I have to hit or just gain weight? You could HIT the WEIGHTS. 8)
  19. You enjoy seeing people humiliated? Let me preface this response, with the fact that I love watching the show "Punk'd". Depends on the person/organization, yes, I do enjoy seeing people/organization get humilated. Especially an unoffical ESPN sponsored team like the Yankees or the Red Sox. It's the nature of the beast, if you are going to be a "reporter." Besides, once in awhile, a little egg in the face, does help keep a reporters ego in check.
  20. I know it's HIGHLY unlikely, with all the "sources" saying the same thing, but wouldn't it be a HUGE EGG in the faces of the likes of Ostrede/Heyman/Gammons, if Boston is not the winning bid? Again, I know it's unlikely, but, I would laugh my booty off.
  21. Yeah, thats the silver lining in this. I wouldnt have wanted the Cubs to bid in the nieghborhood of 45 mil, but at least the Yankees didnt get him. You're right, "The Evil Empire" didn't get Matsuzaka, but "The Borg" will. But hey, I kinda hoping he pulls a Beckett, and bombs his first yr in Boston.
  22. Ture, but players don't necessarily compare their stats to comparable players (ie Soriano to Beltran), they usually compare their stats with another highly soughtafter FA (ie Soriano/Lee to Ramirez). My guess is...you can throw out Soriano getting $100 million now, and I think you will see teams play one player off the other. I believe both Soriano and Lee will end up with similar contracts as Ramirez.
  23. Is it me, or do anybody here believe that Sorian and Carlos Lee both did a "disgruntled sigh" with a annoyed "aww....crap" when they heard Aramis signed, with some people are calling a "hometown contract?" I think Soriano and Lee can now expected to get offers around what ARamis got, and not what Beltran go (in Soriano's case). Not that it matters, but if there was a "legitimate offer of $100 million" made by the Angels, and ARam took less money to stay with the Cubs (and leaving $27 mill on the table, "alledgely) I wonder what the MLBPA is thinking right now?
  24. Nope. The last game of the losing streak was a 4-0 loss to the D'Backs and I believe it was a t Wrigley. The series you are prolly thinking about was the weekend (May 11-13) before the 12 gamer, when Mueller got his injury That was also the same month the Cubs kicked the holy dog-doody out of the Dodgers, 20-1.
  25. If you're looking for hope, don't look to the Cubs. Look somewhere else. Like Truffle's sig.
