  1. No that's incorrect. According to Dusty's "belief" a players "primes yrs" are actually between 35 and 40 yrs old. "29-33" that's too young to help a franchise win a championship. Shame on you. [-X :)
  2. I know people here feel Giles is a "better choice" iin 2006 to produce, but let's look at reality, for a moment, there is a strong chance, that given a choice between Chicago and St Louis (two time NLCS entrant, and WS failure) who do you think he choice? Or the Dodgers and the Cubs? The A's or the Cubs? I just think, the Cubs should not put all of their eggs into one basket in terms of Giles. If the Cubs could land Giles, I would love it, but I also believe Giles don't see the Cubs the same way as we do, and that he may see the Cubs as a contender but in a few yrs (time he doesn't have). I rather have Junior, then Floyd (who is coming off a career yr) or any other player mention with the Cubs (Jones?). I still make Giles the priority, but I would definately leave open the opp for Junior.
  3. We can get the same production from Rich Hill or Jon Koronka, or heck even Rinyel Pinto then we can from Glendon Rusch, at a FRACTURE of the cost it will take to keep Rusch. If Rusch can get overpaid from a team like the Rangers, let him go.
  4. The Orioles, Angels and Dodgers are gonna come up on every corner IF/OF this offseason. Baltimore have Tejada and Roberts in the middle of their IF, with Mora at 3rd. So I think they'd make a hard run at Konerko. Cause you knopw after you get a pitching coach, the first thing you do is....get more offensive players. The Angels have Cabrera/Kennedy (Kennedy COULD be replace by Figgins or Aybar) in the middle with MacPherson at third. The thing is....they already have Erstad/Kotchman (Erstad, they'd trade if they sign Konerko) at first. The Dodgers have Kent and a TJS victim Izturis in the middle, so I see them going after a 2b to help ficilitate a Kent move to 1B. And with Joel Guzman coming up quickly, they may want at 2B. Guzman at SS Itzuris at 2B? I think the Dodgers would target Giles and Dunn before Konerko. With that said....there are two places I see Konerko.....OVERPRICED in Chicago, or overpriced in Yankees. You know Stienbrenner'll never learn.
  5. Whats with White Sox fans being a first class breed all of the sudden? I loathe the media so. That means, Jim Caple would be banned from this board, because he "label" us Cubs fans. Not that it matters, because like Skip Bayless, he is a POS, but the thought comforts me to know, Caple won't be allow on this board.
  6. Spiderman or Batman? Hmmm...that's a tough one, really. Both are "bonafid genius." Both are extremely athlethic. Both have curses they bear (Uncle Ben .v. Bruce's parent). Spidey is more juvenile, where as Batman is dark, and at time demented. Spidey has the hotter girls, but Batman has the toys, the car, etc, etc.. The big difference between the two is....."the conscious." Spidey has a conscious, whereas Batman is 'cold blooded' (DC's The Punisher's) Spiderman has the powers, but I don't know if he could beat any other "superhero", cause physically, Spiderman is weak (without the "powers), wheras Batman could hold his own, against Superman, Manhunter, Lantern, etc. I'll go with Batman, because he is tougher to beat, then Spiderman. Batman is also cooler, and more versatile.
  7. Good point, and lets not forget Dusty manages better in day games. well day games in the summer anyways. With non-white players, nonetheless.
  8. But to be honest, there are what.....2 LEGITIMATE "SPECIAL" SS in ALL of baseball: Tejada, and ARod (and I do still count ARod as a SS). So getting a special ss is not an easy thing for any team. Now I do see Cedeno being a multi-time AS, slightly more powerful version of Adam Everett. I really believe Cedeno is going to be one heck of a player.
  9. It sounds like Junior's days have been numbered since the trade deadline: I know alot of people are high on getting Giles, or Adam Dunn (unlikely), but would anybody want to reopen the opportunity to acquire Junior? Junior/Giles are both 35, and I do believe at this stage of their career, Junior still has the "higher" upside in terms of offense. I like Giles, and I would love to get Giles, but I think, getting Junior is more likely then Giles. Giles is the "safer" pick to produce in 06, but I think Junior is WELL-WORTH the risk for 2006. Considering the "paycheck" Junior is making, the Cubs could offer either Rich Hill and/or Jeriome Williams (or Sergio Mitre) and Corey Patterson for Junior. Now the more money they be willing to eat, I would be willing to include either Nolasco or Pinto (and take back Williams). What ya'll think? I don't think the Cubs can go wrong with either player, to be honest.
  10. I think the big problem with Patterson, is that he hasn't find his niche, yet. HE wants to a #3 hitter, and the Cubs want him to be either a #1/2 or #6 hitter. And as everybody knows each spot in the lineup has a SPECIFIC function. (ie leadoff is to get on, #2 is to get leadoff in scoring position, #3/4 to drive in runs) I believe if Corey and the Cubs have a set down talk, about what they (I mean what both sides agree on) want to do this yr, I think Corey will be fine. Tell Corey what they expect from him this yr, BEFORE spring training, to give him time to work out the gameplan.
  11. I believe the Astros are going to win it, simply because BOTH Kruk and Reynolds both predicting the WS would win. Everybody is picking the White Sox, and seeing as the SOX are not very good at meeting expectations, I say they choke. BTW; I really want to see the Astro's win it because of Biggio and Bagwell. Both players are nearing the end, and I feel it is the best tribute if both can get that title.
  12. Well, see my post above for clarification, but for the record, he's also won divisions with Kent Mercker, Paul Byrd, Jason Marquis, Russ Ortiz, Mike Hampton, and Horatio Ramirez as starters, and made decent relievers out of more than a few players. He also managed to keep a team that lost 60% of it's starting staff in 1st place this year. And it's not as if we don't have talent on this staff. Zambrano and Prior are two really, really good pitchers, and Kerry Wood could benefit from Leo as well, as could Jerome Williams. You would think with the kinda talent Mazzone (and Cox) has had on the staff, that would have more WS titles, then the one. Don't get me wrong, they have more appearance (and WS titles) then the Cubs have NLCS appareance, but I am simply not really impressed with Mazzone, to be honest. Set back, and go after Peterson/Maddux, or my personal favorite Bud Black.
  13. Cubs in 6.....oh wait.........I forget I was watching baseball. My bad.
  14. (Raise half of glass of beer in the air) Listening to SemiSonics"s "Closing Time" in remembrance of all the bad times the Cubs hav endured at the POC stadium. (Raises the last of beer in remembrance)
  15. Let me get this straight....you're upset over not getting (or asking for permission to speak to) Mazzone? Why? Since 1991, there has been a Maddux, Smoltz, Millwood, Glavine, Neagle, Avery, Hudson, etc on the staff. What I am saying is....Mazzone is only as good as the talent provided for him. I'm not saying the Cubs shouldn't have atleast ask for permisssion to talk, but anybody here thinks he is going to turn the Orioles staff into the "New Braves" is simply deluding themselves (I apologize if you consider that labeling, not my intention) Basically, what I am saying....Mazzone is going to be a BUST OF A pick up for Balitmore. I' not saying Rothschild is good, but if we pass on Mazzone now, and say.....get a Black, Mike Maddux, or Rick Peterson after the 2006 season, I be glad to wait. I personally, think those three cats are better PC then Mazzone.
  16. I've heard Boston, NYY, and the Angels as having a seriously contenders for the services of Delgado, especially if the Marlins can't move Lowell. In an ideal world, the Marlins would move Lowell (have to part with either Castillo, or one of the two Stokes/Hmerida"sp?"), to save money, put Cabrera back at his natural position of 3rd, and keep Delgado, but this isn't a perfect world. So I could see Delgado going to the Angels for Kotchman, Rivera, and Izturis (since AGone is a FA), not saying it will happen, just saying it wouldn't surprise me. Strike One for Mr. Hendry this off-season. You stick with Dusty, Jim, and you will both be gone next year. Guess it's time for me to start lighting candles, because the front office certainly isn't helping the 2006 team. I am anti-Baker as anybody, but how can you justify firing Baker, right now? Who do you want to replace him? Davey Johnson, Dierker, McKeon, or gulp Piniella? I am going to be in the minority, but I say keep Baker (esp. on a short lease), cause his next contract (with whoever), and his legacy as a manager (cause let's face he is worried about his credibility) are at stake in 2006, and I believe you might see the best Baker-led team in a long-time. But hey, I'm in the minority.
  17. The feeling I got was that Girardi was going to wait for the Cubs to open up, but seeing as he is gonna take the Marlins, he feels the job in Chicago won't be opening up soon. :x I don't blame him for taking a job like this when it's offered. The Fish have a pretty good team and organization so it isn't like he is taking a job with the Royals. I think it's a decent opportunity for him and there is no guarantee that he would get the Cub job. Add to that that it might not just be Baker that gets canned. I don't either, but he doesn't know what kind of team he's going get in 2006. Guarantee to be back in 2006: Willis/Cabrera/Pierre/Beckett/LoDuca. Most likely gone: Lowell(with Castillo), Encanracion, Gonzalez, Jones. GONE: Burnett. Delgado is on the brink of either staying or going. So, it's going to be a rough winter for Marlins, and I hope Girardi knows what he is doing.
  18. I think that anyone can see that the White Sox's success this year is due almost entirely to their lights-out pitching staff. Every pitcher on that team - starters and relievers - has pitched better than expectations (some more drastically than others). I think (read: "hope") Hendry sees this as clearly as we do, and if he does try to emulate the White Sox, it will be their pitching, not their batting, that he goes for. The media folks seem to be saying it's because of small ball. And we ALL know the media is baseball savvy. This---in order---as to why the WS played well. 1: The starters 2: playing in a weak division (only Cleveland worried them) 3: small ball.
  19. I'd rather sign a guy like Randy Winn (who is a FA, IIRC) who will provide a little pop and get on base than another windmill like Wilson. I don't think Winn is a FA. I believe the Giants picked up his option for 2006, already. The traded for him with 2006 in mind, not 05. So cross off Winn.
  20. Not saying Jones is that sensational or that he should be a #1 priority but there's not any guarantee that Giles or any other names floated on this board are dying to come to the Cubs. Point = Cubs fans need to be flexible and realistic. Jacque Jones SPLIT OBP SLG OPS Season 319 .438 .757 Career .327 .455 .792 Don't we already have somebody like that already on the Cubs? Oh yeah......it's Corey Patterson. No thank you on JJ. If the Cubs can't land Giles and other good RF in trade, I would prefer going with either Burnitz or trade for somebody like Craig Monroe, instead of siging Jones. Second: On Giles, St. Lou is gonna be a attractive place to sign, and I would be hard-pressed to compete with a team that has been to two straight NLCS, and a World Series, in the last 2 yrs. But if I was the Cubs, when FA opening, I would call up Giles and his agent, and tell them a "plane ticket for Chicago" is ready for them, and start the "process" of luring him to Chicago. The sooner they do this, the better the chances. Don't rag on St. Lou, but convince him, that the city of Chicago takes care of it's players.
  21. The feeling I got was that Girardi was going to wait for the Cubs to open up, but seeing as he is gonna take the Marlins, he feels the job in Chicago won't be opening up soon. :x
  22. The thing that keeps my eyebrows raised (If ya smelllll....) is the fact he was was born in the Domican Republic, and yet I haven't heard one time he has gone back to his home country. Sammy, Pedro, Moises, Papi, etc, etc...always seems able to get back home, but not Albert. Now unless I am wrong, I think he doesn't leave the states, cause that would require a background check on his passport (if he has one), and with the crackdown on "phony" passports, you know.......I think Pujols is actually closer to 35, then he is 25....he just won't "risk" leaving the stats. But...until the age is "verified" (come on....he ain't 25) people will take it at his word. But IMO, he is the greatest hitter to ever lied about his age.
  23. There's Mazzone, Mike Maddux and everybody else. You half correct, USSoccer, you forgot Rick Petersen and Bud Black. I would Mazzone, Maddux, Petersen and Black and then there is everybody else. But Rothschild, is like Baker, he doesn't hold his pitchers responsible.
  24. Dude, go and root for the UMPIRES.
  25. First: I don't care what has been said about, but CHEMISTRY is an important factor in baseball. The White Sox have chemistry, the Cubs don't. The Cardinals have chemistry, the Cubs don't. Etc, etc...Don't convince me otherwise, but chemisty is vastly UNDERRATED. Second: The White Sox is legitmately a "Lightning in a bottle" formula, hmmmm. don't that formula sound familiar. They have gotten NOTHING for Crede, Uribe, Pierznyski, Hermansen, Marte, Rowand, and look where they are at. This team rode the pitching staff, Konerko, and Dye to the WS. To me, that doesn't sound like a formula this will last very long. Kenny Williams is still an idiot. The Sox having a great yr is overshadowing that little tidbit.
