  1. I'm willing to bet Hendry offers a "Dempster/Williamson" type deal to KW. I would love to see KW in short-relief/closer in 2007. KW knows at best, he might get $5 mill for a yr, but I doubt it. With his history, he will have to "settle" for about 2 mill at best. I really want to see KW rejuvenate his career.
  2. In theory I appauded the move for Pierre, because I was tired of the station-to-station type ball the Cubs org had implored for years. So, in theory Juan Pierre was going to help the Cubs. Unfortunately, his impact has been minimum, to say the least. And what he is making, his impact needed to be bigger and it wasn't. So unless Pierre settles for a deal in the 3-4 mill for atmost 2 years, I would rather see the Cubs move on, and see if they could acquire a guy like Freel.
  3. And 10-3 against the Cards, the ONLY opponent the Cubs seems to want to play this year. Maybe Dusty should had focus a little less on trying to beat the Cards, and a little more time on playing actually good baseball, then the Cubs wouldn't be battling the Pirates and the Royals for the worst record. Give that man the Worst Manager of the Year award.
  4. The Cubs are going to make HISTORY this yr: wikipedia.com Think about that...Philadelphia organization went from 1883-1979 without winning a TITLE. Then in 1980....BOOM, World Series titles, after 97 years. The Cubs last won the title in 1908. This is 2006. After the year, the Cubs would have gone 98 years without a title, and they will set the record for the longest drought in sports history. Phildelphia was at 97 years without a title. Chicago NL will be at 98 and counting. Doesn't that give you SUCH a confidence that this org knows what the heck they are doing? (Did you know theme plays)
  5. Well, when you put it that way.... They've refunded in the past, even if you left early. I know the Yankees have, on occasion, done the same thing, even to people who never even tried to go to the game but had unused tickets. If they would simply release both Nefti Perez and Glendon Rusch, I wouldn't care if they don't refund the money, as long as they get rid of the Cubs two Eddie Robinson's.
  6. They aren't giving refunds to people who left early? Why should they? They are allowed to scalp their own tickets, so why would they refund honest people money?
  7. I don't know if Lee is going to get more then 4 and 48. He MAY have to wait till January or so and/or wait to see what guys like Sheffield and Soriano will do as free agents. Not to mention they'll prolly be some decent OF talent COULD (not saying will, but could) be available, like Andru Jones, Pat Burrell, Jermaine Dye, etc. So, I don't know if Carlos Lee is going to get what he THINKS he's worth. My guess is Lee is going to settle for something a little more then the 4 and 48, perhaps 4 and 52-55 mill.
  8. With who; Webb or Thom?
  9. Yes, so even though their OBPs weren't good, they still had a significantly better IsoD (more patience) than Izturis at age 26. Exactly. Both had more patience than Izturis at this age, which allowed them to progress as hitters. If Izturis doesn't learn how to take a walk, he will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER, be a consistently good player. Which is why...after the season....have Cesar and Ronny go visit Tony Gwynn and see if they can pick up a few tricks to hitting, such as....putting the wooden piece instrument on the white baseball, for instance. Or that just because the pitcher throws say ball, doesn't mean you have to swing. But none of the younger players on the Cubs are going to improve, unless they bring in coaches that DEMANDS plate zone judgment, something that Baker has a disdain for.
  10. So would I. Knowing that....what would it take to get Elijah to the Cubs org?
  11. Pass whatever you were during that post, over here.
  12. Here would be my lineup in 2007 Lineup: CF: Pierre 2B: Durham (I think he would be perfect in the #2 slot) 1B: Lee RF: Sheffield 3B: ARam LF: Jones/Murton LF C: Barrett C SS: Izturis Rotation Zambrano Schimdt Prior Marshall Guzman LR: Marmol/Rusch (BIG FATTY is here in 2007,, unofrtunately) *Sheffield MIGHT be willing to switch to 1B this yr, but he won't be happy about it. I think he would leave NY to return to RF. *Ray Durham isn't the player he was even 5 yrs ago, but he doesn't have to be. Durham is a career .280/.350/.440 and would slot in very NICELY between Pierre and Lee. This would allow the Cubs to keep one less black hole out of the starting lineup, but Cedeno/Perez would be crappy bench.
  13. Like Vance, I could see the Cubs going after Vicente Padilla. But I could see the Cubs going after a guy like Ton Armas, or a Miguel Batista, or even (gulp) Jeff Suppan.
  14. I see SOME similarilites, but I don't think they are similar pitchers. Rich throws a little bit harder, and Sean has more pitchers in his arsenal, and they are more polished. With that said, it would ONLY against them, if they are put back-to-back in the rotation. If Hill and Marshall are separate by say....Guzman or Marmol, then I don't see how it would work against either.
  15. Why are people wasting their time and breathe on something they knew in their minds would happen. So why are people even surprise?
  16. Agreed. There is a REASON why Sarge Jr is playing for his 7th or 8th team in his ML career. Not bad of a 4th OF option or a backup plan, but I wouldn't make GMJ a target, per se.
  17. Terrance Long was a victim of racist comments in Cleveland a few yrs back while he was still in Oakland. And David Wells----while not racist, but still poor taste---was hassle by Cleveland fans by the loss of his mother the night before a BIG playoff game. So yeah, stupidity still is evident in pro sports.
  18. Personally, I think he did it more for the psyche of Hill and allow Hill to gain the confidence that HE CAN pitch at the major league level. Personally, allowing Hill to go 8 innings (especially the way he was throwing) was the absolute RIGHT call to make. Now let's see if Hill carries this confidence into the rest of the season. If he can...that is one less question having to be answered for 2007.
  19. What? Out of 50 players who have played shortstop this year, Ronny is dead last in offensive production (measured by VORP). Last. He can only improve, but what are his chances of becoming a "standout" at a position in which more offensive production is expected? The point is they don't care about offense. It's manly to talk tough on defense, whereas offense if for pretty boys. Tough teams defend, and there's no better market than Chicago to play up the defense concept, regardless of the sport, or the relative value of defense in that sport. the cubs should sign ben wallace. AND Ron Artest.
  20. I'd take a flier on Choi. He can't be worse then Mabry or Nevin. And he is a better defensive player then both.
  21. I actually like the move to 2b for Cedeno. For some reason it's look like to me that Cedeno would often take his OFFENSE to the defense, and his DEFENSE to his offense. IMO, by moving him to SS, I think we might, i said MIGHT, see a more relax Cedeno, and perhaps a more confident Cedeno, knowing he could play a easier position.
  22. Actually, Tiger......I think a better comparasion would be Omar Vizquel. Omar wasn't exactly "hot stuff" with the bat as an offensive player, but once he got to Cleveland he became a very solid player. Now granted, for his stay in Cleveland, he played with both Alomar's, Belle, Thome, Ramirez, Sorrento, Lofton, Fryman, Baerga....so with that kind of offensive talent around, Omar could relaz and play his game. Now if the Cubs could land a big bat or two (Depedning on ARam), maybe Izturis could be the next Vizquel, (I'm not holding my breathe) and relax and become the player everybody thought he would be before his injury. With that said....Cedeno/Izturis NEEDS to talk to Gywnn about hitting, and taking pitches, in the worst of ways.
  23. I just don't agree. Rogers is their ace. He will likely get beat by every other ace on an AL playoff team. The Tigers are a very good team, but Bonderman is their best pitcher, Rogers isn't an "ace" and Verlander has never gone this deep in a season. And Jones isn't exactly lights out at the end of the game. Depending on how the teams shake out, they could lose in the first round. No he's not. He maybe listed as the #1 on their depth chart, but come GAME 1 of the ALDS, my money is on Jeremy Bonderman as "The Man" for Detroit, followed by Rogers then Verlander.
  24. downey also calls izturis a "beauty" and a "gem." he also says a shortstop like this doesn't come along every day and that the trade was "one of the Cubs' smartest manuvers of the century." wow. Then again, EVEN I could have turn the double in the game. It didn't have to take a GG to turn it, AGon simply lost focus for a split second, and turn a routine DP (I believe he should had won the GG that yr, anyways, and had not committed an error in the playoffs, I beileve). So that reasoning by Downey is beyond FLAWED. It wasn't as if it was a difficult play to make. None the less his "one of the smartest manuvers of the century" is completely bogus. I won't EVER---oustside of this thread---put the acquistion of Izturis in the same sentence as the Lee and Ramirez. I don't know what kind of bonus the Trib paid Downey to write that column, but it is completely bogus.
