  1. Don't forget the immortal David Kelton. RYAN GRIPP, BABY!!!!! He's the final piece to the puzzle.
  2. There are a few starting pitchers in the big leagues who have succeeded with only 2 pitches. And, of course, he has 3 pitches. Technically, he has four. He has the 88-93 mpg FB, the 12-6 curveball, the 9-3 ish sweeping curve, I've seen him throw (or is that a slurve?) and a work in progress change up. I would love to see Hill developed consistanices with his secondary pitches. Everybody knows he has the big overhand curve, he loves to use, but if he can improve his change-up, and his sweeping curve to a point, they become atleast decent options for out pitches, then I say he is "turning the corner." With that said, these last two starts PROVES he can pitch at this level. Adn the possible thought of a ALL HOMEGROWN talent in the rotation (Prior/Zambrano and any combo of /Marshall/Hill/Guzman/Ryu/Gallagher) is awfully tempting. I hope Hill keeps doing his thing, cause Hill and Marshall would be PERFECT compliments to the hard-throwing Z/Prior/Guzman/Marmol.
  3. They still do...Haren/Zito/Street/Swisher/Bradley/Kotsay/Crosby, they may not be as "sexy" of names as the previous regime, but that talent level is still unbelievable.
  4. First: I doubt the Cubs would had still acquired Barrett. Untile Mauer was ready, the Cubs prolly would had gone the Bako/Blanco/etc,etc rout until Joe was ready. Second: Barrett's "value" is at catcher. If heplays 1st, or 3rd, he becomes a middle of the road player offensively, atleast. Whereas at catcher, Barrett is considered one of the game's best offensive catcher.
  5. Johnny Damon went to the A's in a three team deal: Damon to Oakland Roberto Hernandez to KC Ben Grieve to Tampa Bay. Jermaine Dye went straight up for Nefti Perez. Think KC isn't a foolish organization?
  6. Impressive for a #8 hitter. Well, impressive for a catcher too. The NL Central has some pretty good hitting catchers this year; Ross has been good in Cincy, Barrett for us, Paulino for Pittsburgh. Don't forget Yadier Molina! Oh never mind, he can't hit his weight. Hey............don't you be knocking that "All Star", or McCarver will come for ya....Ya know?
  7. I wouldn't mind a Pagan/Jones platoon in center, or a Murton/Jones platoon at a corner. Heck, as long as the OF doesn't involve Juan Pierre, we're going in the right direction. First: Seeing as Pagan is a switch-hitter why couldn't he be a platoon partner for BOTH Murton and Jones? Second: I hate to break it to you, but Pierre should be back in 2007. And overpaid at that. You know Hendry will try to justify that trade by keeping Pierre for atleast another 2 years.
  8. Longoria has been amazing. I don't think I've ever done such a quick 180 on a player in such a short period of time. I was pretty pissed that the Rays took Longoria over Lincecum or Miller, but with how easily he's cruised through 2 levels, I'm a believer. It'll be interesting to see how he does in his 3 week stint in Montgomery to finish this season. I wouldn't be surprised if he got some time in Tampa after the minor league season ends, similar to Rickie Weeks in '03. Look I live in Prattville (about 10 minutes north of Montgomery) and I already seen this kid play, and boy.....I would't say the Biscuits were DESPARATE for offense (seeing as they were a solid offensive team) but getting Reid Brignac and Evan Longoria makes the Biscuits a tough team in AA. And I planned to watch a few more Biscuits games before the yr is out.
  9. Yes. I would take Prior over Muaer ANY DAY. Pitching over hitting, ANY DAY. And I would take Prior and Barrett over Mauer and a lesser talented pitcher. I mean, with the way Barrett has played the last 2 yrs, I have no regrets over the Cubs not being able to get Mauer. I like Mauer, but I still would choose PITCHING over hitting anyday, seeing as you can ALWAYS find hitting. Look as much as Prior has been snakebitten over the last 3 yrs (both due to bad luck and bad manager) Prior is still one of the game's best pitchers, WHEN HEALTHY. And when you hear people talk about the Cubs, it also about the healthy of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood.
  10. Speed. Defense comes next week. So bunting must be the following week then? Nah man, it's called hitting not bunting. Bunting is for girly-girls, dude. There will be no bunting on this team. Next week, it Doughnuts Retrieval Week brought to you by the Dusty Baker Foundation for the Awareness of Stupid People.
  11. Could you guys imagine Dusty getting replace by a dude name Whitey?
  12. Man, that kid is paranoid beyond belief. No team would have given him the money the Cubs did, and then tell him not to pitch, That is complete crap, and he knows it. He is upset his career never took off, and he is bitter about it. I mean even before the draft, Clanton had a questionable character, and this just proves those doubters right. I have no doubt that Clanton is in the wrong, because why is he the only one to come forward and nobody else has? I mean, Christensen, Sisco, and a few others who left the Cubs org under less then good terms, could have back up Clanton's stories. The kid needs to shut up, take the money he Eddie Robinson'd from the Cubs, and enjoy his life.
  13. Tampa Bay with as many wins as the Cubs?!? Fire Hendry! Fire Baker! Hey our payroll is only $40 million more then them! Somebody really needs to send the "Fecal League Standings" to both Baker and Hendry with a note saying, "Thanks, you morons." Cause both Hendry and Baker needs to forced feed how bad of management they TRULY are.
  14. Here's to taking your mind off of Cubs baseball today: http://sportspickle.com/features/volume5/2006-0802-ortiz.html Talk about clutch.....man he is clutch..
  15. Bill Plaschke thinks Grady Little is hyper intelligent. Bill prolly couldn't spell his last name, so he prolly thinks everybody is "hyper-intelligent."
  16. No, it's not unbelievable, it's totally believable.
  17. Not sure if you're being serious or not, but rearranging rotations to match up with competition is something that would give teams an advantage, but no team has the guts or vision to do it. MLB coaching/management is almost as conservative and copycat as NFL coaching/management. No one wants to deviate from the norm. Baseball coaching/management is much more conservative than the NFL. Otherwise you'd still see the wishbone and no forward pass in the NFL. I'm a Bears fan. May I inquire as to what this "forward pass" thing is? I heard a rumor that the Bears tried this "forward pass" a few years ago. But I believe the "pass" slipped from the QB's hand and went BACKWARDS ten yards, before it was recovered. I can't confirmed tho.
  18. Not sure if you're being serious or not, but rearranging rotations to match up with competition is something that would give teams an advantage, but no team has the guts or vision to do it. MLB coaching/management is almost as conservative and copycat as NFL coaching/management. No one wants to deviate from the norm. I was half-joking/half-serious, to be honest.
  19. I am going to say the Steve Phillips of Baseball Tonight put the claim on Andruw Jones. Cause we all know how much Steve Phillips LOVES to claim player, during August.
  20. Keep the sledgehammer and the watermelon away from Sean, please... 8)
  21. I just don't understand why other teams just don't set up their rotations against the Cubs, by having three lefties schedule. I mean, it doesn't take a rocket-scientist to figure that out. If every team for the rest of the yr, threw lefties in every game against the Cubs, I seriously doubt the Cubs would win another ballgame this yr. With that said, Zach Duke is going tomorrow, so that is pretty guarantee a win for the Pirates. Now the Pirates need to do a pitching change for Sunday, and pull out Snell and put Paul Malholm in his place, and a SWEEP is guarantee.
  22. Personally, I want nothing to do with either Pierre or Podsenik. I know Hendry plans to extend Pierre, but I rather see Chris Walker or even Sam Fuld be given a chance to win the spot at Spring Training in 2007. If one does, and struggles, he would be cheap enough to replace. The Cubs are going to have to developed some homegrown position players.
  23. But dude, I got to stick with the horses that got me here, dude. Z is my horse, and I listen to my horse, dude. This is the same manager who has an unnatural disdain for walks, and that if you know how to walk, he will beat it out of you (coughsmurtoncoughs). So is it any surprise that the Cubs manager wouldn't know that pitching and pitching injuries have a connection? But hey, Baker should be gone after the year, and we better HOPE we get a manager who knows the game of baseball, instead of trying to be the BFF with every player he manages.
  24. Remember the garbage that Hendry was spewing when he was trying to pimp out Jacques Jones "defensive abilities" at the time of the press conference to announce his signing? JJ hasn't exactly been Todd Hundley at there, but he isn't as good defensively as Hendry claim. It's a very similar to how the Cubs and the Tribune have been pimping Izturis "defensive abilities" since the trade. The difference between the two....at least JJ has a resemblance of a bat. So if the Cubs are planning to build around pitching and defense in 2007, should they perhaps.........try to get some pitchers and players who can defense to make it work?
