  1. At San Diego, on ESPN and ESPN Radio. RHP Chris Carpenter (15-8, 3.09 ERA, 184 K/43 BB) @ RHP Jake Peavy (11-14, 4.09 ERA, 215/62)
  2. Yeah, I don't think Drew will opt out and the Dodgers would prefer a trade to losing Drew without compensation. I'm not sure why the Tigers might trade/non-tender Craig Monroe but then go for Jacque. They seem like similar players who bat from different sides of the plate.
  3. Judging his managing skills on just one year of managing with the Marlins isn't that great an idea either. You're probably not going to get a complete picture.
  4. Heh, it would have been truely Cub-like if Kendall had picked off Bartlett.
  5. The gave a scouting report and mentioned his Candian roots. Then this:
  6. Different situation. I can't wait for ESPN to start showing Bartman replays.
  7. Oregon can beat USC. USC definitely is suspect this year. Cal would be much better if their best defensive player wasn't out for the season (and defense, especially DBs, isn't something that the Pac-10 has depth for, outside of USC).
  8. You think the M's will pony up the money for Daisuke and Schmidt? Honestly, no. But given all the things in their favor in terms of the Japanese players signing with them (and the fact that Schmidt isn't a slam dunk Mariner signing), I think they have to be in the top 2 or 3 (add Baltimore, I guess). That wasn't really a fair question on my part either. I was trying to point out that many people are viewing Daisuke and Schmidt as non-Cubs because of rumors of them going to Seattle, but it's highly unlikely both end up there. I don't know that Schmidt is a non-Cub, but Daisuke definitely is (imo, of course).
  9. Prior had more pitches/starts in 2003 (his first full season in the bigs) than Z has ever had. That's scary.
  10. Ron Gardenhire would have, judging the way the Twins treated Liriano this season.
  11. Castillo is third in the league in CS. And promptly gets CS while Zito was still struggling a bit with command.
  12. Yeah right! With what money? The money the gained from dumping Miguel Cabrera's soon-to-be more expensive contract on the Cubs? :) Not official by any means, but when MLB.com thinks Freddi is going to be a Marlin, I don't have much hope: EDIT: Serena is fast.
  13. If true, this speaks about Hendry's willingess/ability to do what is best for the Cubs. He always talks about doing the right thing and making fair deals and treating people right. Theoretically this is to give the Cubs a reputation as a team that is good to deal with. Yet it also can lead to missing the boat on guys. Hendry refuses to even talk about future candidates yesterday, as if he was caught off guard that he'd need a new manager. This is why you fire Baker in June. This is why you don't wait to the last minute. This is why you don't get an obvious lame duck play out the string when you need to move forward. Hendry is more interested in keeping his good guy image intact than he is in making the Cubs winners. I'm guessing Hendry would play this off as he was looking in another direction anyway. But there is absolutely no justification for him treating this situation the way he did. The decision could have and should have been handled much earlier, and the candidates could have and should have been lined up already. Frankly, it shouldn't matter if Dusty was fired in June or yesterday. Girardi was fired today and Fredi is being hired today - the Marlins knew they needed a replacement and were prepared.
  14. Why couldn't the Marlins have been all over Piniella instead? :(
  15. Man, I just read that the Marlins are supposed to announce Fredi during their conference to fire Girardi. I didn't realize they were that close to hiring Fredi. :(
