  1. Romero is interesting. We know they tend to avoid off-field issues with amateur talent but this regime famously drafted Clay Buccholz (with disagreement between Theo and Jed) despite his off the field issues. That's a good point. I personally don't want the Cubs to draft Romero (unless he falls to the later rounds) because on top of the poor makeup I've read conditioning and staying in shape are problems for him. Everything I've read about this Cubs regime is how much they stress character and makeup. They value it and want their scouts to show examples of good character before drafting that player. I doubt they'd be willing to risk a high draft pick on a player kicked off his college team who also has a bad body/conditioning issues. Scouting blurbs say he really improved his conditioning this year. Obviously this regime and its scouts have a great reputation of doing their due dilligence when researching players. Part of the problem for outsiders like us is we don't know what he did but Google indicates he might have been kicked off the team for fighting a teammate, something I don't think regime will ignore.

  8. Keith Law's final draft board is out. It's premium content but I thought the intro (which isn't premium) with more details on just where this draft is weak was interesting: http://www.espn.com/blog/keith-law/insider/post?id=7154 Doesn't sound like the type of draft you want to rely on a late overslot signing since there won't be many of those candidates and you could be easily poached.

  11. I think it depends on the individual draft. In 2014, there was no consensus at 1.4. It looks like the Cubs did well to go underslot with a good hitter in Schwarber and then use the savings on Cease, Steele and Sands (and by spreading their funds to three 7-figure prep arms, they mitigated some of the inherent risk of HS pitchers). But in other years, they picked their top guy and used up all their funds in the first round (Bryant, Happ, etc) with no complaints from us.

  13. We're gonna have to work on this name. Buttery? This is fantastic. Buttgomery sounds amusing but I think Buttery wins.

  16. I think one underslot guy is enough if you want an overslot pitchers.
  17. Calling his command mediocre is generous. Butler has retired 12 in a row since I said that.
