  1. Duker, I want you to be right so much. But I respectfully have to say you are crazy on this one. I'm disappointed and in disbelief that the 2017 Cubs are this mediocre, especially since the division was just telling them to win it. Was giving it to them. But when so many things are below average, it's hard to see everything suddenly clicking. At least in 2015, we had quality starting pitching but just couldn't score. We needed one thing to improve to take off. We need like three major things to improve this time. There is no opportunity to create any real momentum because there is no way this staff is going to get into a groove long enough. And our offense isn't good enough this season to compensate for that. An easy part of the schedule, that doesn't exist for us this season. This is the Jason Heyward situation from last year, where everybody wanted to believe -- it's early, look at his track record, he's too good -- until finally we all just had to concede it wasn't going to happen. The Cubs need their own reset. I still think there is a very real chance that ending such an historic drought and the intensity of those playoffs just took something out of them. (I realize now I've gotten into the crazy part of this post, but I do believe it). Hopefully, these kinds of posts are hilarious to look back on in a few months. I just hope we are talking about mine and not yours. The comparison to Heyward last year isn't great because last year, you were relying on one guy to improve and there was a higher threshold to achieve this goal. This year, you can rely on any host of guys improving from their underachieving starts (some of whom are starting to turn it around) or acquiring another SP just to get the traction needed to win this garbage division.
  2. Cubs 31st rounder Ramsey Romano is a re-draft. The Cubs picked him in the 35th round in 2014. Four players the Cubs drafted last year but didn''t sign were re-drafted this year by other teams (two other unsigned 2016 Cubs picks were draft-eligible again this year but weren't picked): 2016 12th rounder: Trey Cobb, RHP, Oklahoma State – 8th round this year 2016 14th rounder: Parker Dunshee, RHP, Wake Forest – 7th round this year 2016 24th rounder: Reynaldo Rivera, OF, Chipola CC – 2nd round this year 2016 30th rounder: Montana Parsons, RHP, Baylor – 24th round this year (drafted out of San Jacinto JC last year) Also a few unsigned HS picks from 2014-2015 were picked by other teams this year: 2015, 33rd rounder: Brad Bass, RHP, Notre Dame - 7th round this year 2014, 34th rounder: Jake Thompson, RHP, Oregon State - 4th round this year 2015, 37th rounder: Riley Adams, C, San Diego - 3rd round this year

  9. That's what I figured. Can't imagine Estrada getting anywhere near that. I'd honestly be surprised if he even took the $1.5 million that Cease got. He's certainly not the prospect pre-draft (TJS or not) that Cease was.
  10. Jose Albertos did not make Eugene's roster. He's staying in the AZL. Aramis Ademan, Miguel Amaya and Javier Assad did make Eugene's roster, as did Bailey Clark.
  11. My random guesses for savings: $550k on Abbott, $100k on Uelmen, Carrier and Glowicki. As you said, the Cubs might be able to get a small savings on Velazquez since he doesn't have a college commitment but I don't think it'll be a lot. That plus the pick 195's actual slot gets you somewhere around $1 - $1.05 million and you still have about $350k in the 5% tax. I imagine Estrada is getting all of that nearly $1.4 million. He certainly didn't fall to the 6th round for a six-figure bonus. Also I think Little and Lange will both get slot.

  14. Little actually threw 85.1 innings this season in JC. For comparison, Alex Lange has thrown 111 innings (so far - he obviously has at least one more start in Omaha). I'm guessing the Cubs will let Little throw about 20 more innings in Mesa/Eugene and will shut down Lange, so the gap between the two will only be about 20-25 innings. The Cubs will correctly keep him in the rotation next year and make him prove he's only a reliever. I don't disagree with that at all, he's still probably at an A ball level to start next year where what's best for his long term no matter what role is to get him innings/reps. Those 85.1 IP were included in the 87. It might be 88 innings. First off, the approximately 100 IP he'll amass this season isn't a bad starting point for a starting pitcher who will be in A ball next year (especially when you compare Little to Lange who will likely be around 120). Secondly, he's actually thrown 116.1 innings since 2015, not 88. 85.1 at State College of Florida in 2017 27 IP in the Cape Cod League in 2016 4 IP at UNC in 2016
