  1. Second time in three years the top pitching prospect in baseball has been suspended for weed (Reyes in 2016): [tweet] [/tweet] So dumb they even bother testing, and made worse that they only test minor leaguers.
  2. Julio Pablo Martinez was granted his free agency. The top 3 teams interested in him are the Marlins, Yankees and Rangers. MLB's annual international showcase is this week in Santo Domingo. Ben Badler had a piece on some of the top prospects in the showcase. None are linked to the Cubs, though he doesn't mention teams for some of the prospects. The two most intriguing names are Cuban defectors Osiel Rodriguez and Sandy Gaston - both are hard throwing 16-year old RHPs. Rodriguez hasn't been linked to a team and Badler only mentions the Marlins as showing some interest in Gaston. The blurb on Rodriguez makes him sound like he should be the top international prospect for 2018-19 and a top 100 prospect in baseball the moment he signs.
  3. I guess Dusty is partially absolved. Whoever thought it was a good idea to have a 9 year old pitching in an MLB playoff game should get some of the blame. I hope he wasn't forced to throw any breaking balls. Real life Rookie of the Year just wasn't as good as the movie.
  4. Got to go to road games. I'm guessing it got expensive when they moved out of Ho Ho Kam.
  5. There's a segment of Cubs twitter that just wants to spend, spend, spend, this year and next. Partly, it's because they want to get the best players (back end of contract be damned) but I believe a part of it's a dislike for billionaire owners and specifically the Ricketts and wanting to spend their money.
  6. Oregon State OF Trevor Larnach had a 3.034 OPS this weekend. BA has him ranked 92nd in their draft board rankings but he clearly jumped quite a bit on draft boards this weekend.
  7. I wonder if at this point some guys are sitting out, out of principle to prove a point for another week or so even if they have decent offers (like JD and his 5/125 or whatever and Hosmer and his 6/120 or whatever). Some Boston media type tweeted out last week JD Martinez' offer is a lot closer to $100 million than $125.
  8. Carson's younger brother: [tweet] [/tweet] [tweet] [/tweet] [tweet] [/tweet] [tweet] [/tweet]
  9. More on Hankins: [tweet] [/tweet] Another draft pitcher injury: [tweet] [/tweet]
  10. I got my BA Prospect Handbook yesterday. Here is 11-31: 11. DJ Wilson, OF 12. David Bote, 2B/3B 13. Bryan Hudson, LHP 14. Keegan Thompson, RHP 15. Dillon Maples, RHP 16. Cory Abbott, RHP 17. Trevor Clifton, RHP 18. Justin Steele, LHP 19. Duane Underwood, RHP 20. Mark Zagunis, OF 21. Dakota Mekkes, RHP 22. Miguel Amaya, C 23. Javier Assad, RHP 24. Charcer Burks, OF 25. Jason Vosler, 3B 26. Michael Rucker, RHP 27. Erich Uelman, RHP 28. Alec Mills, RHP 29. Jonathan Sierra, OF 30. Jake Stinnett, RHP 31. Manuel Rondon, LHP Most surprising omission for me is Jeremiah Estrada.
  11. Some draft lists have him as the top prospect in the draft right now. [tweet] [/tweet]
  12. Not surprised that one person would rank any of those three lower than consensus. They all have real question marks. I've seen a few others question Singer's stuff compared to the standard pitcher who goes 1st overall. McClanahan is a TJS survivor with a short track record thus far too. Madrigal is a 5'6" second baseman.
  13. There were two consecutive conferences. First there was one for the Yu Darvish signing with Theo, Yu and Yu's translator. Then, there was the start of ST conference with Theo, Jed and Joe. No idea where it's archived. I saw it on Facebook Live.
  14. Yeah, it seems strange. When I heard Theo say it, I didn't take it at all negatively as a few of you have. Theo has talked a few times about how disappointed and frustrated he's been for the players this offseason. Can't imagine many other front office types have talked like that. He's said all the right things even if he doesn't mean it.
  15. Eventually. god what a dark and horsefeathers couple of years that was trading sammy and throwing him under the bus, replacing him with jeromy horsefeathering burnitz, nomar rips his groin off like an hour into the season, surprise d-lee becomes a superstar, next year d-lee still looking superstarish and smashes his wrist 3 hours into the season (and is never really the same, albeit still v good), all the while we all come to the slow realization that 2003 mark prior is never coming back and kerry wood's career might also be over Ugh, I was at the game when Furcal barreled into Lee's wrist.
  16. Washington DC is not in Asia. Washington DC is not in Asia. Korea is in Asia. I googled it. http://www.ajc.com/sports/baseball/braves-compare-korean-signee-bae-trae-turner/8aJ66RmwLF20y7PTdZPgWP/ He's referring to Bryce Harper. To actually answer your question, these are players who would make a jump straight to the majors. Bae is currently a minor leaguer at rookie ball level.
  17. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-top-mlb-prospects-of-asia/ Yusei Kikuchi, LHP, Japan - likely coming next offseason Seong-Beom Na, OF, Korea Takahiro Norimoto, RHP, Japan Po-Jung Wang, OF, Taiwan Yoshitomo Tsutsugo, OF, Japan Jeong Choi, 3B, Korea
  18. I don't specifically recall the Harper comparison, but I believe it happened. Folks here were (understandably) really high on Castro and made a lot of optimistic predictions that he did not fulfill. One I recall is that Castro was "guaranteed" to be the next Jeter. Something along those lines. We said the same thing about Ronny Cedeno. Not here.
  19. Here's what BP wrote on Alzolay in their top 100 list:
  20. Guys, you're getting off topic. Please move all Brewers talk to the also-rans thread. This thread is for teams coasting to the NL Central title.
  21. it's weird because it was keith law From Keith Law's chat before Yu signed:
  22. How is Darvish not the worlds best fielding pitcher with the way he finishes his delivery? Not according to Brian Kenny. It would've been a good signing if only he would field his position better.
  23. Yes, I would love to go to a 6-man rotation like they did in the second half of 2016.
