  1. 11:27 Z: With the *possibly* changing landscape to pitch usage at the major league level, has there been any discussion about the way certain amateur players are evaluated? I’m thinking leaning more towards players that might not have a great fastball but can really spin a breaker (maybe Alex Lange?). 11:28 Kiley McDaniel: Been talking to scouts about this recently. I think it’s happening, you’re seeing HS power arms that are athletic with stuff but have a head whack or bad command with good Trackman stuff and teams are just taking them now, where they rarely did in the past. I think Zack Burdi is gonna shove when he gets back from TJ and he should’ve gone higher. Lange and Brendon Little fit that description too. We’ve written about how Madrigal fits the Betts/Altuve/Albies mold of sneaky power…it’s happening as GMs and analytics staffs have more say in draft decisions
  2. Bold strategy to have Wainwright incur his annual serious injury against minor leaguers this year.
  3. Kevonte Mitchell hit a grand slam, apparently Ricky Tyler Thomas is being stretched out as a starter and Erich Uelmen was pretty good today: https://www.thecubreporter.com/03212018/mitchell-grand-salami-gives-angels-indigestion-riverview SOUTH BEND LINEUP: 3a. 7. Strop's first in-game action this spring:
  8. As was Vlad Jr. :banghead: Yeah, I have no idea if the Cubs liked Pearson enough to where he was even considered by them, but he could've been had at 27 without a bidding war... I don't believe this is true. Vlad Jr. was linked the Blue Jays from the start. Yeah, I don't remember the Cubs being linked to Vlad Jr.
  9. So did Lackey. Probably contributed more to the 2015 NLDS win than the 2016 playoffs. i screamed loud enough for the whole block to hear me when that happened I screamed loud enough... that the whole office knew the Cubs did something good. And someone suggested maybe it would be better if I was at bar down the street.
  10. No, he would've been a free agent this offseason and not next. Weird. I saw it somewhere that his service time for 2018 season is 6.070. Must've read it wrong or something. I've seen a few articles this offseason mention he would've been a free agent before the 2018 season. Brett at BN has referenced that too.
  11. Yeah, he'll be 29. Imagine if he didn't do that extension. He would be a FA with Harper next offseason. No, he would've been a free agent this offseason and not next.
  12. I think he'll look for a longer deal with numerous opt outs. Say an opt out every 2 years. If he signs with the Cubs, I assume one of the opt outs would be in 2021.
  13. Grimm definitely contributed to the NLDS win in 2015. So did Lackey. Probably contributed more to the 2015 NLDS win than the 2016 playoffs.
  14. TAKE THAT, REGULAR SHOW That's R. Show to you.
  15. haha. i was going to ask if anybody had checked in on sneaky to make sure his heart survived that. congrats Time to check UMFan's Facebook to see his rants about the first 39:59 of the game.
  16. Justin Wilson was working 96-97 today with good command. It'll be great to have Detroit Justin Wilson in this year's bullpen.
  17. Zack Short hit a HR today: https://www.thecubreporter.com/03172018/9th-inning-rally-gains-split-cubs-riverview TENNESSEE PITCHERS: 1. Kyle Miller: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R (4 ER), 6 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP, 1 WP, 2 HR, 1 GIDP, 2/2 GO/AO, 59 pitches (26 strikes) 2. Casey Bloomquist: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HBP, 3/1 GO/AO, 29 pitches (15 strikes) 3. Jake Stinnett: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 4/0 GO/AO, 23 pitches (14 strikes) IOWA PITCHERS: 1. Preston Morrison: 2.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R (3 ER), 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HR, 22 pitches (18 strikes)
  18. Adrian Morejon at 61 is way more of a coulda been a Cubs prospect, since he was linked to them initially. Really? We had heavy interest in Morejon? The Padres spent a lot on him, and I thought we were still in the penalty phase. My memory is a little hazy now about when he signed. Even if we weren't in the penalty phase I'm not sure if the Cubs were willing to outbid the Padres. He was granted free agency a few months before they went into the penalty box. The Cubs were linked to him throughout the time before he was granted a free agency (they were going crazy spending that year on guys like Sierra, Ademan, Albertos, etc) but right around when he was granted free agency, he decided to wait for the next class when the Cubs would be in the penalty box. The Padres signed him while the Cubs were penalized.
