    I would be floored if the Cubs left any of their IFA pool unspent. At this point it's obvious that they aren't going to be shelling out $3 million to one of the LA bonus babies in the 2018 class, so I wonder if they are taking the shotgun approach or if they knew that they would need the majority of their pool for a Japanese or Cuban player? I think they've held out for one of the Cubans personally. I'm very hopeful they try to add IFA money and get a hell of a class, considering the system is weak currently. Wouldn't shock me to see them add one of the Braves guys either, depending on if they make it to July 2nd. Most of Badler's articles have focused on the DR so it's possible the Cubs have already honed in on some big names in Venezuela or emerging baseball countries like Panama or Colombia. I agree the Cubs will maximize this international class. This regime spent big on Soler before the caps were instituted, spent all their money in 2012 and blew past their spending thresholds in 2013 and 2015. They aren't going to ignore the international market now, especially now that they aren't drafting in the top 10.

    Amongst Japanese pitchers, only Daisuke Matsuzaka has thrown 200 or more IP in his first US season. They're probably assuming some sort of injury or a team protecting him since a) he throws on 5 saysbrest in the NPB and b) didn't pitch much this season due to injury.

    Hahaha.Thankfully I don't think they can afford him but that too would be so UCLA. They need to go after someone like Frost (probably a pipe dream with Nebraska likely having an opening) or Norvell when they whiff on Chip Kelly.

    Kevin Sumln is their next coach Doubt it. They'll swing for the fences at someone like Chip Kelly, and then when they miss, they'll go for someone who is much cheaper than Sumlin will be.

    So Buehler only threw 98 innings last year and his career best was 102.1, back in college in 2014. I think there's sizable risk of him becoming another Julio Urías whose strict pitch and innings count severely limits his big league value as a starter (and that assumes no more injuries).

    The Cubs are linked to one Dominican shortstop next year, Rafael Morel. Defensive-minded, above-average runner. 5'11", 167 lbs, 15-years old now. He's certainly not the best Dominican SS in next year's class - those are Orelvis Martin (Blue Jays), Marco Luciano (Giants) and Noelvi Marte (Mariners).     Out of the box in July 2, 2018, yes. Cubs can't go as wild now, with the stricter new CBA.
