    I wouldn't be surprised if Fleita sticks around for a year for the same reason. I just want the right GM hired. I'll give him a year to put his staff together after that. The only major changes I would see a new GM making is adding new positions to give us an actual statistical department of our scouting. You may see a few positions change over, but I put it highly likely that many members of the staff will be back. And when we're talking about an executive assistant, I doubt a new GM is going to care who gets Carlos Marmol's visa in line, as long as its done without him having to worry about it. Now I'm sure Ricketts will be open to any demands, so if Cashman or Friedman comes in and says I want Fleita gone immediately, it will happen, but there may be bigger immediate worries for someone coming in.

    I'm not expecting them to leave, I'm just commenting that it seems odd to me that a new head of baseball operations wouldn't have his choice of executive assistant. Well on that article about the current assistant, it says right in it that the previous executive assistant spanned multiple GMs and a quarter of a decade. I know from my own experience at my company when the new CEO came in, our executive admin assistant stayed in the same role. We've read stuff saying that actual baseball people like Fleita may be forced on the new GM, so an executive assistant doesn't seem to odd. Sure if they decide after a year, they want a change it would be granted, but right away? That would seem odd, IMO. Where have you read Fleita may be forced on the new guy? Forced was a bad word choice. But I remember reading speculation right after that Flieta and Wilken have a strong chance to remain because Ricketts is happy with them.

    So if you're not canning them, the new management (in any business) would retain them, assuming their performance is good. Basically, I'm sure Hendry didn't bring this person in, so it shouldn't be expected they leave with him.

    Yea, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a secretary and an executive assistant. An executive assistant implies more responsibility IMO. So the executive assistant would be someone that the company has invested more capital into developing and wouldn't immediately can just for the new manager. When I think secretary I think of someone who answers the main phone line, takes messages, keeps the office supplies stocked, and leaves the job behind at 5:01. Thats not what I imagine an executive assistant to be.

    The new GM doesn't get to hire his own assistant? What kind of nonsense is that? I dunno, thats what she told me. She worked her way up from an intern at the company serveral years ago so I don't think they'd just let her go because Hendry was canned. Her offical title (on the website) is Executive Assistant to Vice President/General Manager. I have no idea what the role of Executive Assisant is, but I assume their job isn't baseball related. Its all about being organized and being able to effectively communicate and such. So I don't think its absurd to say the GM wouldn't get to choose, at least to the extent that they would retain the previous person at first.

    It wont be local anymore they were just bought out and are moving to NYC. NYC? I thought they were staying midwest, like Indiana or something.

    Something like 2/20 might be a good deal for both sides - maybe with a club option for a third year for a little more money. Dempster gets the security likely through the remainder of his career, and the Cubs save a few million for next year if they choose to pursue two major FAs. He's also not so expensive that it's crippling if he falls off a cliff either of the next two years. Are you saying on top of the option he picks up? There's no reason for Dempster to take 2/20 when he has 1/14 locked in. Yea I can't see him only doing it for one extra year of guarantee. I could see two ways: Signs two year extension @ 2/18 2012: 14M, 2013: 7.5M, 2014: 10.5M Does not pick up option (with agreement to new deal) @ 3/32 2012: 8M, 2013&14 : 12M Adjust numbers a bit perhaps, but something along those lines.

    Eh, but they also choose PBR over any other cheap beer. And if you are ever in a "hipster" bar you will find the PBR marked up over other cheap beer, and they choose it still. Also I have a totally different view of hipsters as far as being broke goes. Sure some might be legitimately broke, but others are "broke" even though their parents are paying their rent and they buy expensive Ray Bans to go with their thrift store shirt and designer jeans. So its a mixed bag. Anyways this is off topic and I should probably just start a thread in Rants.

    In all seriousness, hipsters love for PBR has probably made it more available, and I don't worry about being lumped in with them because I don't look like a hipster. So their inability to understand irony and its application to PBR is the one positive contribution they have on society in my opinoin.

    I'm not really interested in any Z deal that extends our financial commitment in years or overall value. Would rather just eat the cost and have more money to spend in 2012 FA.

    Busch Light, Old Style, PBR and Keystone are all battling it out for dominance in the shallow gene pool market. You can go straight to hell for lumping PBR in there Hipster? I can't wait for the day that hipsters either: 1. Find another beer to ironically drink 2. Discover the actual meaning of irony and stop drinking PBR Then I'll have my beer back from those douches.

    Well this back and forth has become silly. Of course front loading is silly in the MLB if you aren't going to take advantage of the time value of money to try and reduce the overall value of the contract. Besides the original idea was backloading was harmful. That isn't an endorsement of frontloading or refusing to backload, just that it may not be advisable to pay Alphonso Soriano $6M in year one of a deal that averages $17M.

    Yea my assumption is that deffered payments have special status under the CBA.

    If we're still on the hook for the deferred payment either way, I just assume keep him.

    Most front loaded contracts end up being for less overall value because of this. Conversely, backloading too much can make the overall contract value large becuase of this. I realize the players are pretty dumb on average, but they have smart agents working for them who will realize what time value of money is and adjust demands accordingly.

Just basically a way to out off the payment rather than making it equal throughout the year. You may be right though. Yeah, I would hope that it wasn't counted against next year's budget since it has to be paid by January 2012. Actually thinking about it Silva's $2M is from a buyout I think, so that is probably counted against 2011 also.

    It would be rare, but: 1. Few roster spots open 2. Many raises due soon 3. Money to spend 4. Uncertainty about revenue being reinvested. (So for instance with Ricketts, its fairly certain any money we don't spend will be put back into the club. If the owner was still the Trib, maybe not) Given those 4 parameters, front-loading could be advisable. Given our ownership, your statement is true for Cubs purposes. And of course there is backloading and backloading so much that its unrealistic to expect to keep up with your payroll. The latter is bad, obviously. I think if we wanted to get Pujols or Fielder, that could become a reality given a couple other needs we will have. I can't imagine Fielder's or Pujols' first year salary being smaller than $11 for Fielder or $15 for Pujols and not be a major detriment down the road.

    Yea, its odd because backloading can hurt you, but looking at just next year, it doesn't effect us. It has probably had more potential to hamper us in past years, but our budget was sufficiently large enough to absorb the backloaded portions of deals alright. Length of contract has harmed, us, though really just Soriano. Front loading could be good if you were in a position where you for some reason have a lot of money to spend and very few open roster spots.
