Gholston is a good pickup, in theory. It makes sense that a disappointing OLB from a 3-4 could do better as a straight up end in a 4-3 scheme. But if that was the case, he would have showed something as a pass rusher with the Jets. And he showed nothing. Marinelli has been given lots of credit as a guy who can get the most out of players. I think that reputation has taken a hit with the Bears but he's going to have to work all his magic to get anything out of Gholston this year.. I don't think it's all that much of a reach that the correct role/position in the correct system with the right coach could make him a decent guy to have in the rotation. Expecting him to become much more than that is when it gets really unlikely, IMO. I think he would struggle to get a top 7 DL spot, which is what he needs to do to be "in the rotation". He could make the 53 man and never dress though. Only other way is if he can make a special teams impact.

So Spencer was drafted when Ruskell was in Seattle right? This makes sense. Will this guy be an upgrade to Kreutz or not?

Davis isn't the starter. Spaeth is. Davis will be an after thought in the offense. I'm almost positive I read Lovie say Davis will now be the starter. Well I don't think Lovie will have the final say, so I'll be surprised if it stays that way. He's the only returning TE so he gets it now by default, but I'm sure it won't be long before we get articles about Martz raving how Spaeth is the TE his system needs.

Barber signing is interesting. He won't be here with Taylor. I don't think either of them play ST and the third RB will definitely need to.

Trying to come up with a likely list of the 61 players (53 active, 8 P.S.) players and I have to say the Bears roster seems empty. I kept a lot of UDFA on that list and its only 53. Granted we may see more signings and unkown guys will come up (seems like every year we have a CB come out of nowhere to make the roster). Its funny because I think a lot of people wanted him gone, but at this point, I'm not sure there are better options.

Peppers, Idonije, Paea, Adams, Wotton, Toenia, Melton... who else am I forgetting? Feels like we could use another piece. We'll probably dress 7, so you'd want at least 3-4 more for camp competition, practice squad fodder and the inactive list.

I'm under the impression that the 46th spot can be used for any position you like. Indianapolis has kept only 2 QBs for years. The Bears did two years ago, and likely would have this past season if not for Hanie's pre-season injury. And really, you can still keep a third QB, he just won't dress or be available to play on game day. Mybe I misunderstood the new rule though. It would seem silly for the NFL to say you get 46 roster spots and 3 must be used on QBs.

Just for reference, averaging it out, this is what the Bears dressed last year (had to calculate this myself based on GP, but it should be accurate... missing .0625 which must account for the rare occurance of a player dressing, but not playing any plays): DB 9.25 DL 7 LB 5.625 OL 7 QB 2 RB 3 ST 3 TE 3.3125 WR 4.75 This year, you will get one extra spot, instead of the emergency QB spot. We have room for another WR still, if we decide to go that route.

If Williams is handed the job over Bennett, sure. Bennett has good promise, but is still a large question mark. If he can beat out Williams, I think he will. Taking away special teams players you probably have 20 roster spots available on offense to dress each weak. If you can use up only 10 with QB and OL (3/7 or 2/8) you have 10 skilled spots. 5-WR 2-RB 2-TE 1-RB/FB/TE Now if you dress 3 QB and 8 OL, you probably can only keep 4 WR, so we may end up bitching that we didn't sign a Sims-Walker so that we could dress a 3rd QB, but we can start that when we get to it.

It's a roster spot that could have been used for an impact player on offense. Haha...ok. I think with a 90 man training camp roster, we can manage to squeeze in a ST guy. They don't dress 90 on game day. But they do get to dress 46 now. With a likely shift in our use of TE and the possibility of only keeping/dressing 2 QB, there is plenty of room for one more WR on the team. It probably means Bennett gets shafted a bit, so the question becomes Bennett vs Williams, essentially.

Anyone know if there are websites with detailed stats about number of 4 WR sets and 2 TE sets and such things for each team?

Well they basically have 5 WR now: Williams, Knox, Hester, Bennett, Hurd. We may not take a FB again, and probably 2/3 of our TE will be blocking TEs. Davis could get some time as a receiver, but will have a lesser impact than Olsen. And we could go back to carrying only 2 QBs. So I don't think its out of the question we could bring in another WR as an impact player. Not saying they are planning to, but there is roster space for it. Hurd does't effect that possibility.

I don't have a problem with taking a chance on Williams in a vacuum. Its a decent risk to take. My problem moreso is the context of it with all the other moves. I have a feeling this is being made and not much else will be done to the offense. We could use another WR (Sims Walker) and at least one starter on the line still.

I believe the timeline is for him to end up back on the DL in April 2012.

My understanding is that Reinsdorf did everything in his power to block the Grizz from moving into Chicago. I imagine he'd do the same to any other team. Doesn't sound like a realistic idea for Charlotte to leave. And once upon a time the Hornets were a pretty successful franchise there. And from things I've read, they have a bad debt situation. The article mentioned being Chicago's version of Clippers.... The Clippers have zero debt. That has to be extremely helpful in keeping them profitable, along with keeping costs down of course.
