    This organization knows how to find people to pitch well enough to win games with this defense and offense. I'm not all that worried about it, whether they sign a couple guys or trade for someone who is undervalued. Trading what is starting to look like an elite young bat (drafted and developed by guys who have had quite a bit of success with that recently) isn't a necessity. Sure. They can find the Jason Hammels, John Lackeys, and Brett Andersons to get the team to the playoffs. But you need better than that to contend once you get there. It's highly unlikely they luck into an Arrieta situation again. Happ has looked terrific ever since ST began, but we should probably pump the brakes on him with only an 8 game sample size. Let's see if he's still making contact this well after 150 PAs. Remember that he's playing in the 2nd most hitter friendly league in all of minor league baseball and he's still not good defensively. Nope, not really. It's still baseball. Only it's in short series so random lucky crap means a lot more. So, if anything, you could argue the opposite of what you said. You need better to make it through 162 than you necessarily do in a best of 5 and two best of 7s.

    i really should like him more than i do...it just feels like he's been around for so long and it's impossible to believe he's only 23. like i gave up on him being anything very good a while ago.

    Seriously, he shouldn't be going anywhere except to our 25-man next year (or even sometime this year). So he can fight for 350 PAs each of the next 2 years at the big league level, while 60% of the starting rotation reaches FA?     I get the argument, but good young pitching exists. It's not a myth. It's a myth because the youth doesn't do much of anything for you. There is nothing even resembling a semblance of certainty that you're getting any long term value out of them even when they pan out. I feel just as comfortable that a good 30 year old pitcher will give me a good 2-3 years as I would a good 24 year old (and little to nothing as far as certainty goes beyond that).

    Apparently literally everybody who works for the Cubs in just about any capacity is getting some form of a ring. A lady who is a part time seasonal wrigley field tour guide (said she works like 80 hours a year) called into the score and said she is getting one. Said it will be real gold (but obv not real diamonds) Seems pretty generous of the organization

Part of that is probably due to the fact over half his PAs this year have been vs RHP so far. It's almost as if his PAs against them should be limited or something.

    Because this is what crisis P.R. firms do in a crisis. They find all the dirt they can on the other guy and feed it to the media to report on. Just like the dumb gate agents and cops, they can claim they were just "doing their job". That seems really stupid if that is the case. Why not just issue some kind of public apology, maybe some token firing of some employee thrown under the bus, and take the L? I feel like that would be way better received.

    I have only loosely followed this, and United made some really stupid decisions that I am in no way defending. They should have put their employees on another plane (or, hell, even a car) or offered more money until someone actually agreed to volunteer. That said, that is really bizarre behavior. Like actually getting to the point that he had to be forcibly removed and dragged off was really really weird. Who does that?

    [tweet] [/tweet] Uhh??? Nothing about being a restricted FA. Also that other rule at the bottom is something I've never heard of though. Is that new or has it always been there? I hope you pointed it out to him that article says absolutely nothing about a restricted FA. I'm pretty sure he posted that because of that and the fact that this guy is an idiot and that is funny because there is no such thing as restricted free agency in baseball.

    Yes he was, my office has a view across the sun-times building. Several kayakers were going after Red Bull sponsored baseballs, can't miss out on those collector's items. I figured they were part of the event, put there to retrieve the balls and not just leave them in the river.

    They announced this a few months ago...he's getting a street dedicated to him in Humboldt Park. I thought it was weird as horsefeathers too. But then, it doesn't look like the bar is real high for those honorary street signs.

    the international pool bonus and the draft caps came in the same cba, implemented a few weeks after theo got hired. both came into play summer 2012
